Joe, it's a well documented fact that prior to the introduction of games on personal computers, no government employee had ever wasted any time at all.

Strange but true.

Courtesy of the ABC Users List here is a very comprehensive list of Notation Software available via the Web. http://proxy-mail.mailcity.lycos.com/bin/redirector2.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Face.acadiau.ca%2Fscore%2Fothers.htm&utime=969927044&class=0&foo=4768c92f528f197aa717ef7899e75af3

There's lots of stuff there for PC and Mac (not sure about Linux). I suggest that you seek some feedback in this Forum before spending megabucks.

I should point out that at the time of writing this that the info in the link above is only a few days old - there are other links on the Web which are now very dated.

Regards, John

Thank you so much, Joe. I ought to have known that you would answer for me. I know what you mean about fooling around with the computer. My husband is self taught too, and he is now a systems administrator for a software company. I'm not much into the programming end of it, but once I learn how to do something, I've got it. I did finally learn how to do the blue clicky thing (with Kat's careful instruction) and I've got that down pat.

Margarita, who is grateful for Joe's helpful instructions

Joe; I wouldn't have guessed abt the solitaire, etc, but that may be due I NEVER played card games as a youth, or when in the Navy; they always wanted me to put down some money - "to make it real." I was muich too tight for that. I certainly need (rather desperately?) to learn more abt these computors; If I ever get my other projects done - like re-assembling my 4-wheel-drive - I want to reassemble my other computor w/upgrades of hard drive & processor, & run it on RedHat Linux.

Cheers, BK (mostly lurking - if I'm here at all lately)

Oh, and one more thing, Margarita - you say you want to be told how to operate these programs "step by step." That's a big mistake. What you need to do with software is explore it and play with it, and find out for yourself how it works and what it will do. If you look for the logic of computer programs rather than seeking instructions, you'll have a lot more fun and you'll learn a whole lot more.
That's why it bugs me that managers always seem to want to prevent their employees from playing games and doing personal stuff on computers - employees can learn a lot that way.
I think I heard that members of Congress wanted all games, even solitaire and hearts, removed from U.S. Government computers so employees wouldn't waste time. That's a big mistake - solitaire and hearts are two of the best computer instructors in the business. Hope that helps.

Subject: Tune Notation methods: How do I learn?
From: Joe Offer

Hi, Margarita -

Let me repeat those links for stuff that will help:
ABCMUS (click here), a program that will play ABC tunes.
John in Brisbane's ABC Guide - the best I've seen, but he may be embarrassed to hear that.
NoteWorthy Composer which is a complete MIDI program for making, playing, and printing music.

ABCMUS and Noteworthy install themselves - all you do is click on the file that you've downloaded, and they'll do the rest. If you have Windows 95 or 98, there will be an icon for them under "programs" that you access from your "start" button. Once you've started running any Windows program worth its salt, click on the "help" menu on the menu bar at the top of your screen, and explore what that help menu offers you. Also explore all the menus up there, and you'll often find lots of things are pretty self-explanatory. NoteWorthy has provided many sample files for you to play with, and those samples will also teach you many of the things you can do with the program. NoteWorthy saves files in its own NWC format that includes lyrics and other nice things that are advanced beyond what MIDI files can do. If you want to work on a MIDI file with Noteworthy, you have to go to the "file" menu and "import" the MIDI file (identified as somethingoranother.mid. Once you've fooled around with the file and added lyrics and stuff, Noteworthy will want to save the file as somethingoranother.nwc unless you "export" it as a MIDI file.
I guess I think I'm pretty good with this computer stuff, but I haven't learned this stuff in classes, and I've read only one computer book. Most people who use computers well learn by playing around with software, exploring all the menu options to see what they do. If I have to take a class or read a big book to learn how to use a piece of software, it's probably a lousy piece of software. ABCMUS and NoteWorthy composer are very good - just explore them and play around, and you'll be amazed how quickly you learn. If you have trouble, click on "help." You may also want to click on the "help" menu that comes up when you hit the "start" button on Windows 95/98 - there's lots of good stuff there.
Have fun, Margarita.

I've seen both ABC and MIDI to notation used in threads to convey a melody. Where can I get instructions to learn the ABC method? Joe, I know you posted the place to download the MIDI to melody program, but even having done it, I didn't know what to do with it. I'm the type that needs to be shown step by step. Thanks,

Margarita
