I think that what SunrayFC is actually asking for is a "Hide" feature. Sounds like the idea is that every member should be able to click on the "Lyrics & Knowledge" menu item and bring up his or her own customized list of visible threads.

I can't imagine that this would be anything but incredibly difficult to implement.

But while we're on the subject... WHEN is Mudcat going to give up the inaccurate and misleading "Lyrics & Knowledge" menu title, and call the Forum "The Forum"??? There's a "Lyrics & Knowledge" box ON the Forum page that allows a search of the DT and the Forum.... but the Forum is a separate entity and should be consistently labeled as such throughout the Mudcat site,, INCLUDING on the menu bar!

I would like a way to filter out one person's stuff and maybe another's. That is what I hope for. Of course I am sure people would set it to filter me out too. No problem. mg

I'm in sympathy with SunrayFC. It would be nice to be able to flag a particular thread with an "ignore" tag so it doesn't appear on one's screen. I don't know how many times I've opened a thread because its title sounded interesting, only to find that I had no interest in it, and then opened it again the next day because I had forgotten that I had looked at it the day before. If I could have flagged it the first time, I wouldn't have wasted my time opening it again.

The "filter out" function is fine for some things, but it's limited. For one thing, it only allows one to filter out thread titles containing a single string of characters, not multiple strings. If I don't want to see threads whose titles contain "BNP" or "caption", I can't filter out both strings. I have to pick one or the other.

I've written to all the national Newspapers that I read today and asked them if they could just include the things that I want to read in future rather than the bits I'm not so interested in and they have all said that they will in future create a personalised paper for me that includes just the right things - no more so less.

They also very politely suggested that I might rather be limiting myself and that I might perhaps look to broaden my mind by not just reading what I'm interested in but occasionally challenging myself by going a little outside of that.

I didn't understand what they meant.

The music interests here are eclectic enough that most of us, I suspect, are "not interested" in 90% of any given day's threadlist.

Not sure, logistically, how an "ignore" feature here could actually function. My own interests, for example, are pretty well defined, and yet I cannot think of a topical grouping that could be created that would fit my interests and that would allow me to filter for it and then mass-check an ignore setting for all the rest. I don't often bother to use "trace," because it really works best to easily follow threads whose posts I might miss if, for instance, an old, old thread suddenly got a new post that happened to come while I've been away from the Cat for some period of time, or if I have some new info to add to a particular thread in my "interest zone" for which I might have worried I might not be able to recall the thread title-- like a little file cabinet. For me, a very small one.

So how I solve the "not interested" factor without missing threads I'd like to look into, I just upsize the screen's text size and page down instead of scrolling. The threads I'm interested in jump right out at me that way. I use "messages since last visit" a lot as well.

I also know and trust that what interests me interests several of my MudBuds, so I know at least ONE of us is likely to post to those threads, and thus the threads I'd hate to miss do eventually end up at the top of the threadlist where I can spot them without a whole-page-check.


But you know this IS a music site primarily, despite all the fights over the BS section. Thus I think it's healthy to have more than any one person can read on the day's threadlist. And I think it's healthy that no one arbitrarily categorizes the topics and that we get to choose for ourselves how to use the site's resources. It just requires different skills than other boards require, starting with being aware of the different features that ARE set up to allow various ways to organize one's use of the resources. (There's one other site I wish they'd categorize-- it's audbooks, with a weekly poetry project that "causes" me to "waste" a lot of time opening those up before realizing it's another poetry reading instead of an intriguing long-book title-- but then maybe a lot of the site's OTHER users hate the books I LOVE, so whose tastes should site mods satisfy?)


If you'd like to tell us what your particular interests are, perhaps some of us frequent-flyers could suggest ways of using site features to streamline your use. I know that with my periodic vision problems, people here have been generous about guiding me to things I might have missed.

I don't wish to know about "1008 ukeleles" or "We wear our hair in curls" and so many more. But I am interested in loads of threads. But when you have a whole pagefull of stuff to scroll down....frankly I don't.

O well.

Why not as well as a "trace" option there is an "ignore" option. Now that would work.

Exactly, Jack.

SunrayFC, tick the box which says "filter out" by the thread titles, then put whatever you don't want to see in the filter box i.e. "BS" or "LYR REQ" etc. Then use the drop down menu to choose how far back you want to search the threads and hit "go."

You can also use your Ctrl & F keys, then type in what you are looking for and search the thread titles which show up for how ever long you've set the age thing. (Hope that makes sense.)

Do you also know that you can click on anyone's name in their postings and that will take you to a list of all of their postings? Just another way of searching Mudcat.

Whilst I use the "trace" tool to highlight stuff, it would be so useful to be able "IGNORE" the miriads of threads I have no interest in, yet am forced to scroll down through.
