Subject: random questions about speaker cabs ?
From: My Consistent ID

Most days I have ideas about the deficiencies of musical equipment
that I do not have the technical knowledge to resolve.

This may over time become my consistent speaker cab thread.

Todays question is..

Why is it tradition that all 2x12" speaker cabs are designed horizontally ?

Surely in most clubs and pubs where we can manage to find any existing restricted space in a corner to perform,
it would make more sense if they were manufactured in a vertical arrangement.

Even if performance space was not a constricting consideration,
two 12" speakers at ground level can be boomy and not project efficiently.
Whereas arranged vertically, one speaker would be at ground level
perhaps gaining any bass enhancement, and the other would be better placed
upper most for a musicians personal stage monitoring
and additional benefits of projection towards the audience.

If I had the practical skills I would make an ideal 2x12" cab
in a vertical box, with the lower speaker enclosed and the upper speaker open backed.

Why after nearly 40 years can I not buy this optimised designed product from one of the major stage gear brands ?

Rotate the cabinets 90 degrees clockwise.

oh bugger, I'm shit at maths,
I've just realised for the last 40 years I've been rotating them 180..

cheers for a good laugh Smokey.

ok, serious.. I want a vertial 2x12"
bottom speaker enclosed, top speaker open backed
and mounted on an angled baffle.

basically, a 4x12" cut down the middle from top to bottom.

Who makes 'em ?

AFAIK, nobody else wants such a beast, so no-one makes one. I find the design a bit puzzling. What sort of music do you play?

Whoops link didn't work - try HERE with following info:

This is an unusual Cabinet. It is an Upright 2X12. If you prefer it functions well laid on its side too. The original Speakers were replaced with Celestions (I don't know which model and I'm not going to take it apart to see). It is carpet covered with handles on the sides. Black grill cloth (on a removable frame for that raw look) and Fender Logo. the cabnet is a half slant design (one Speaker straight, one slanted. A great cab for guitar, and easy to haul/pack in the car). Will hold a head on top (though a large head like a Marshall will stick out over the sides if that bothers you). This Cabinet has been around the block, but the Speakers are fairly unused as they were replaced right before I bought it and I've used it only a couple times.

It is the Cabinet in the upper right in the picture below (sitting on top of another amp). This is the only picture I have. Sorry.

Well I'm damned! I gather it has not got an open backed upper half though. It would look good with an old Linear 50 (if any still exist and work) perched on the top.

Am I missing something here ? The ONLY Speaker Cabs I have come across that appear to be Horizontal in construction are Bose ! My old HH , the Peaveys , Ohms and Carlsboros have all been vertical , and I have always used Stands to get better Room Coverage , with the HiHat mounts always at the bottom of a Vertical Cabinet .
