THE GENTLENESS IN LIVING
As sung by Kevin Roth on "The Gentleness in Living" (2005)

CHORUS: It's the gentleness in living
That makes it all worthwhile.
It's the tenderness in giving
That keeps us from going wild.

1. A child in the forest of life
Is asking which way he's going,
And I in this torn world of strife
Am thinking I might be knowing. CHORUS

2. A babe in the darkness of night
Is crying for its mother.
She speaks simply, softly, and low
With the sweetness of no other. CHORUS

3. And a young man goes to war
And he don't know where he's goin'.
In his dreams he is so alone,
He leaves his home unknowing. CHORUS

4. A man walks the journey of life.
There's a short road and a long.
He goes only the way he feels right
And prays he's forever strong. CHORUS TWICE

Here is more information about the song, "The Gentleness in Living". I wrote this song some time in the 1960's (back in the Kathy and Carol days) and taught it to several other musicians, among them Guy Carawan. Kathy and I never recorded it and I've never recorded it on any of my solo albums. Several years after I wrote this song, it came out on the Beers Family album of the same title with additional lyrics by Susan Boyer. I've never actually met Susan, at least not that I recall. This process of verses being added to one's song, (although surprising, when it happens to oneself) is actually the folk process that we all know and love. I've always thought it was kind of cool that it happened to one of my songs, although I guess it would have been better if I'd heard about the new version before it was recorded!   :>)

Incredible job....again. In reading this thread, it just occurred to me that the abilities of this website and the forum are BEYOND normal comprehension.....and that is part of the problem with "Looking for lyrics" threads. I would NEVER, EVER think that all I had to do was name a word or two from a line in the middle of a forgotten song....no title....no author......no other information.....and miraculously find my song! If I hadn't become familiar with the technology and Magic here...common sense would dictate that I start a thread..."Help, looking for lyrics." Nice, patient job explaining, Philippa

The song you're looking for is called "The Gentleness in Living" and was written by Susan Boyer and Carol McComb.

It was the title song of an LP by Eric & Martha Nagler w/Evelyne Beers (Philo 1010), released in 1973.

Okay, I'll do it, Catspaw; I have this on disc from an e-mail I sent in answer to a similarly titled query:
I'm responding, in an individual capacity, to your notice on Mudcat to ask you to start a new thread. Most users of the service dislike cumbersome threads with general titles such as "looking for lyrics" with requests for many different song. It is better to start a separate thread for each request for a particular song or genre of song (we get requests such as "songs about WW1", "songs for a second wedding", etc as well as requests for specific songs).

The title of the thread should give the title of the song you seek or some other good clue to what you're looking for. This both helps guide people to look at the thread in the first place and to be able to locate it by filter or by 'forum search' when it is no longer on screen. Threads are archived for about 2 years.

It's also good "threadiquette" to try searching the Digital Tradition database (search box in your right hand corner of the screen) and also, if you have time, to do a forum search before you start a new thread. It may be that your request has already been answered elsewhere on Mudcat.

I am looking for a folk song with words like

"its the gentleness of living that makes it all worthwhile;it's the tenderness of giving that keeps us from going wild."

I had this on an albumn years ago, but the albumn is long gone and I can't find this song anywhere.

tia

Despite the wonderful explanation about generic thread titles, the name of the song has been added to facilitate searches and to honor the author's recent contribution to this thread.
