Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Lynn W Date: 01 Sep 09 - 02:52 PM I am using the Tunebook application, not Tradtunes mentioned above. It displays the tunes as staff notation, but you can also view and edit them in abc. It plays the standard robotic midi sound and has an inbuilt web browser so you can download tunes from the web very easily. I am using it on the OS 3 ipod touch, not sure if it would work with earlier versions. So far as I am aware the Tradtunes app only shows abc, not staff, but perhaps someone who has used it will confirm. Tradtunes comes with more tunes inbuilt but so far as I can see, Tunebook is much more versatile. |
Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Jim McLean Date: 01 Sep 09 - 07:21 AM I suggested them because I have bought various books from them: The Athole Collection, The Marshall Collections and the Glen Collection. They haven't produced anything by Aird as far as I know. |
Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Jack Campin Date: 01 Sep 09 - 06:54 AM As far as I could tell, the Highland Music Trust is an impenetrable clique and I would have no chance whatever of getting the time of day from them. I'm also not about to pretend that the sort of music I've been working on has more than a peripheral connection to the Highlands. |
Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Jim McLean Date: 01 Sep 09 - 06:35 AM Excellent reference source, Jack. It's a pity you cannot find someone who will pay for a CD. Have you tried The Highland Music Trust? |
Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Jack Campin Date: 01 Sep 09 - 06:05 AM It took a very long time, particularly as the National Library of Scotland was closed for a couple of years and I had to transcribe some of it at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and the Bodleian in Oxford. Every tune has been checked over many times against more than one copy of the original books. My original idea was that it would sort of pay for itself as CD-ROM product, but the poor sales of the "Embro, Embro" CD-ROM and the utterly disastrous sales of the flute music one told me to not to even try. |
Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: greg stephens Date: 01 Sep 09 - 05:34 AM Fantastic Jack. How long did that take you|? I have just wasted (??) a considearble portion of the morning have a serendipitous browse, and I can see the rest of the day going the same way. Thank you so much. |

Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Jack Campin Date: 01 Sep 09 - 04:45 AM It had never occurred to me there would be such a thing. Does it display the dots or just play the tune? Does it display the ABC source as well? What sort of iPod does it need? |
Subject: RE: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Lynn W Date: 01 Sep 09 - 04:19 AM Thanks for this Jack - brilliant! I have just got an abc application on my ipod so I can while away many a tedious bus or train journey looking through them. |
Subject: Complete Aird's Airs available From: Jack Campin Date: 31 Aug 09 - 06:20 PM I have put the ABCs for all of Aird's six books of tunes on my website. 1180 tunes. It was going to be a CD-ROM with the tunes in many different formats, biographical notes and a very complex index, but that's not going to happen. Have fun with it. http://www.campin.me.uk |
