Subject: Lyr Req: Basher Green From: Greenm Date: 02 Sep 09 - 08:54 AM Back in the late 60's I remember hearing on a number of occasions a song which I think was entitled Basher Green. I can rember the last two lines of I think the first verse: I didn't like Poles in general and In particular I didn't like him Any one know the song - I think it was Pete Ryder who sang it....... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Basher Green From: Leadfingers Date: 02 Sep 09 - 12:15 PM It leapt out at me ! I have been singing 'Portuguese' for thirty years ! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Basher Green From: Jim Dixon Date: 04 Sep 09 - 01:22 AM Incidentally, there was a rather obscure song called THE BALLAD OF BASHER GREEN. It was featured in a musical play called "The Lord Chamberlain Regrets...!", performed in London in 1961. Lyrics by John Pritchett, music by Ronald Cass. It was also on an LP album. That's all I was able to find out about it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Basher Green From: Greenm Date: 04 Sep 09 - 04:23 AM I suspect that I have confused two songs - I remember someone singing Basher Green around the Manchester Clubs in the 60's and put that together with the Portuguese song. It might even have been Mike Harding who had that in his repertoir - memories are getting a bit hazy. Many thaks for all your help |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Basher Green From: GUEST Date: 08 Feb 13 - 03:52 AM I would love to find the lyrics of The Ballad of Basher Green. What I remember is: "Now this lumpy lout Was insane about All things American Which is why you see He was filled with glee When they brought out bottled tan He covered himself from foot to head In a way that he thought would flatter And awoke dismayed to find himself the shade of Jomo Kenyatta When his landlady brought his morning tea the horror of it all was clear "You'll be passing," she said, "and I'll want your bed 'cos we don't take coloureds here! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Basher Green From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 08 Feb 13 - 04:44 AM I too have a dim memeory of this from my youth in Manchester. I'll have to think about it for a day or so, but I do recall the last line as Thats how Basher Green learnt what tolerence can mean ............ now he only beats up Jews. |
