Subject: RE: Johnny Collins/scattering of ashes 5 Sep From: Herga Kitty Date: 06 Sep 09 - 02:14 PM We sang some songs in remembrance of Johnny at the Wail in Verwood yesterday afternoon and evening - including "Another curry worth cooking, down the road" for the Singing Chef. Alan White scattered some ashes from an English oak, and reminded us that Johnny never made it to a Wail - though he would have like to - because he always had a booking somewhere else! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Johnny Collins/scattering of ashes 5 Sep From: Mrs.Duck Date: 06 Sep 09 - 04:26 PM We were at the Hull Maritime Festival this weekend so couldn't get to the scattering but at the time they were due to be scattered Kimber's Men, Shellback Chorus, Shanty Jack and Fore and Aft sang the Farewell Shanty on the main stage. |
Subject: RE: Johnny Collins/scattering of ashes 5 Sep From: George Papavgeris Date: 07 Sep 09 - 01:15 PM The Scattering of JC's Ashes At approximately 1630hrs Saturday 5th September 2009 The Excelsior, a 1921 sail Trawler, left her berth at the Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival, with a small intimate group and JC's ashes. As the Excelsior slipped her mooring Jim Mageean led the singing with "Rio Grande" and was joined in the chorus by approximately 30 people, who had gathered to sing Johnny on his way. As the other ships present were aware of the occasion, when the Excelsior passed them by they paid their respects. The first ship to pay tribute was the Lord Nelson sounding her whistle and "Dipping" her colours and the Officers stood in dress uniform on the stern platform, this was immediately followed by The Grand Turk, who fired a two canon salute as well as lowering her colours. (There was a slight incident at this point, but that's another story) A group of 1800's Marines fired a 9 gun salute. The Border Patrol and Customs boats followed suit as did the Artemis who lowered her colours as the Excelsior passed by. Excelsior crossed the bar and "Shallow Brown" was gently sung as the skipper found a position where she was able to switch her engines off and drift gently on the tide. Ken Stocks, skipper of the Julia, on which Johnny had sailed as cook, said some final words and then at the same moment on ship as on shore "The Farewell Shanty" was sung as Johnny's son, Michael scattered the ashes and Joyce threw a rose to the waves and we said goodbye to our dear friend. There were a few quiet moments whilst the people present had private thoughts, then the engines fired up and the Inward journey started. The Excelsior returned to her mooring to the strains of Rolling Home " Call All Hands To Man The Capstan" Goodbye Good Buddy Rest In Peace |

Subject: RE: Johnny Collins/scattering of ashes 5 Sep From: Herga Kitty Date: 08 Sep 09 - 04:38 PM The slight incident referred to in George's post was explained to us by Graeme at Herga last night. It was reported by the BBC here . As it was, fortunately, only a slight incident without serious damage or injury, it didn't seem entirely inappropriate to commemorate a singer with a wonderful sense of humour whose last song in public was "Reach for the gin". The BBC didn't report this bit, but apparently the lifeboat was launched before it was known that there was no-one in distress. Kitty |

Subject: RE: Johnny Collins/scattering of ashes 5 Sep From: GUEST,Mr Red Date: 09 Sep 09 - 05:58 AM I suspect there will be a lot of raising of glasses at Bromyard, if only to make sure that his inclusion on the advertising gets some fullfillment. I just noticed it today. |
Subject: RE: Johnny Collins/scattering of ashes 5 Sep From: JohnB Date: 11 Sep 09 - 11:43 PM At what we believed to be the correct time on Sept 5th approx 100 or so of the Morris Community at the Toronto Ale sang "Let Union Be" which we believe to be the last song Johnny sang in the Hospital in Poland. No slight incident's to report, just a hundred or so inductees of the UofT engineering faculty kissing the naughty bits on the Horse statue, with I forget which King mounted on HIS back. The price of education these days. JohnB |
