Subject: BS: Curmudgeon's Vocal Cord Surgery 9-4-2009
From: Bat Goddess
Date: 03 Sep 09 - 09:52 AM

As some of you may know, Curmudgeon (Tom Hall) has been voiceless -- both speaking and singing -- since the end of May. His doctor had been treating it as an allergy problem -- and at least part of it may be just that. His doctor's office really dragged their feet, though, at getting him in to see a nose & throat guy, which he was finally able to do two weeks ago. He found a lesion on Tom's vocal cord, though doesn't seem to be inordinantly concerned about it. Tom is scheduled to have outpatient surgery tomorrow to biopsy and probably remove the lesion.

I've taken a vacation day, so will deliver him to the hospital, wait during the surgery, etc. and will bring him home later in the day. Then comes the hard part -- he can't so much as utter a word for three days. (I've got to check with his doctor -- I think that means 3 complete days following the day of surgery; Tom thinks it means 72 hours from when he comes out of surgery.)

He says he's not worried, but the strain of his voiceless summer is showing on him. He desperately misses the ability to TALK to friends, not to mention not being able to sing.

His surgeon (whom friends in the local medical community say is "the best") is optimistic that he'll have a voice before the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival the last full weekend in September.

We'd appreciate some of the famous Mudcat healing energy focussed in this direction!

Thanks!
Linn

I will give you a call tonight, Linn. This is a three day weekend. If you can use some help. just speak up - you, not Tom.

Tom has been on my healing radar for a while now. We will all hold our brath and wait less than patiently.
Much love,
Mary

Hold your brath, too, Mary. Both of them. You don't want to give Tom any ideas while he is under the Spell of Silence.

Alas, I work in retail. I'm taking tomorrow as a vacation day and I actually have Saturday off because it's my regular day off. I HAVE to work Sunday -- a) because it would put my co-worker into overtime and that's Not Allowed, and, b) if I took the day -- even as a vacation day -- I wouldn't get paid for the Monday holiday. (My co-worker has to work Monday -- I worked last year and I worked the Memorial Day holiday as well as Sunday of that weekend.)

It's almost impossible to have two days off in a row -- but this weekend I'll have 3 out of 4 days off!

I think it is safe to say that Kendall is more concerned and sympathetic than just about anyone besides Linn.

Linn and Tom-

We're so pleased that there's now a medical strategy being implemented. We've been very worried since May.

Hoping for the best!

Let us know if there is anything else we might do.

Sending support and healing light to both of you. Tell Tom if he eants to yell, he's welcome to use all caps for the next three days.

Affectionately, Claire (who's already sent enough hugs through Facebook -- wouldn't want to embarrass Tom, after all)

Seriously, Tom you have my deepest sympathies. Losing my voice is the worst thing that ever happened to me.

Wait a minute here.....Are you sure it needs removed surgically? AS I recall you went with the porcine valve and now the ghost of that pig has crapped on your vocal cords! Maybe all you need is a little Spic and Span.   Check with your doctor........and the janitor.

In any case, I'm thinking about you.....especially if you have pig shit on your vocal cords......YUCH!

Just got home from the hospital a bit ago and stowed the groceries. Tom and I made lunch together -- he made the toast and I made the scrambled eggs with cream cheese. His throat is a little sore after the procedure so soft food is planned -- he's making fish pie tonight.

It actually went pretty much by schedule, though with a lot of waiting scheduled in. 7:30 to the hospital. 9:00 surgery. I think it was about 9:30 or so that the surgeon met me in the conference room and about a half hour after that, they let me into the room assigned to him. (Before he actually got there.) They turned us loose about noon or 12:30, I think.

Anywho, cut to the chase. It's cancer of the vocal cord -- Dr. O'Day said he knew the minute he got in there and looked at it, well before the biopsy report was done. Tom's already set up with appointments for chemo and radiation and won't be seeing Dr. O'Day for a couple weeks.

But Dr. O'Day was pretty upbeat and says Tom should come through this healthy and with a voice -- it may be a bit lower than it was, but it should be okay.

I'll let you know more when we know more. He's already getting frustrated trying to communicate. He can't talk at all for three days and his handwriting (not great to start out with) is very very difficult to read right now. I think it's worse than usual because he's a bit dragged out and drugged out from the anesthesia, etc.

Fact is, it is quite managable nowadays. A very high percentage of even "bad" cases can be looked after with a speaking voice returned. Singing voice, well, usually some limited range can be attained, but, one step at a time, eh?

Tom... I'd say chin up, but I've been there and sometimes, that hurts!

I like the orange and grape popsicles best... cleaned out the post surgery ward in less than a day when I had the last slice and dice! Had to get my buddy to go get more for me and all my new friends. >;-)

Just saw in the grocery adverts, Superstore has 2 litre ice cream on this week for $2.79... I shall stock up. Screw popsicles!

I wish doctors would realize that when you're speaking with them right after a biopsy procedure, you might not yet be right up to speed on the particular flavor cancer. Tom didn't ask and I didn't volunteer any info when I finally got to see him after the surgery. He was still pretty groggy. Just before Tom was set to come home, I asked the nurse at the desk for verification of some key words so I could get some general information online when I got home. She led me away from the desk saying, "Let's talk over here" -- and led me back in to Tom's room where she jumped right in about vocal cord cancer.

It was the first Tom had actually HEARD of it or the results of the biopsy. (The doctor had spoken to me before the biopsy -- but he said he knew as soon as he saw it that it was squamous cell carcinoma.)

Anywho, now I've got questions -- and so does Tom -- and it's a holiday weekend and we can't quiz his doctors, etc. until Tuesday. I'm even sort of guessing at specifics, because nothing was actually spelled out. I THINK it's relatively early glottal (true cord) (not supraglottal or the rare subglottal) squamous cell cancer -- but nobody's actually called it by name.

Arghhhh! And he's still got the chest congestion and cough -- how is THAT affecting his healing from the biopsy? Is it encouraging scar tissue -- that's why he's under orders not to TALK for three days.

Linn

If there is something you want me to look up for you, let me know. I can print out articles and send them to you, or send PDF to get them there quicker. Linn and Tom, I've just been through some scary conjecturing on my docs' parts..spent many nights and days wondering what the hell and not getting enough data to really research much on my own. Drove me nuts. I called my scientist niece who reminded me I did NOT have enough data to go off on worst case scenario tangents which I was doing and not helping myself or anyone around me. I remembered my mantra was "Right here, Right now, All is well, and I am safe and sound." I also put an image of Daffy Duck in my head which would come up whenever my mind started to run away with scary thoughts of the future. When I did that visualisation, I'd see him jumping up and down, steam coming out of his ears and him yelling, with his spitting lisp, "No! Sssssstop!" Made me laugh and stopped those negative thoughts right away.

So, until Monday, Tom grab a pillow when you have to cough and hug it to your tummy, it will help; Linn, cup your hands and pat his back to keep stuff loosened up in his lungs; and, Tom be sure to breath deeply AND blow it all out as deeply as possible, than will help with lungs, getting rid of anaesthesia, etc. And, you can borrow or clone Daffy, any time.

Positive visualisation and loads of good thoughts, plus plentiful thanks being given for a complete and speedy healing. This or something better for the highest good of all concerned. SO mote it be!

In Peace Profound,

luvyakat

I had a nurse scare the bejeezus out of me a couple of years ago when my daughter was admitted to the hospital for an extremely low blood count and jaundice. She was talking to another nurse while we were in the room and remarked that an oncologist would probably have to be called. Good lord, talk about bad news delivered baldly. Someone should have sat us down and said "she appears to be anemic, and these days all hematologists are also oncologists, because that is a lot of what they do, but a lot of blood disorders have nothing to do with cancer."

Good luck, Linn, and I say mention something to about that mistake to the nurse's supervisor.

What happened was this:

Right after the surgery, I got the call in the waiting room to meet the doctor in the conference room. He started right in with the fact that he knew immediately upon looking at it (without waiting for biopsy), that it was squamous cell carcinoma. I'm sure this had been in the back of our heads, but Tom had told me that the doctor had seemed upbeat about the lesion and suggested Tom would have his singing voice back before the PMFF -- so, of course, I really hadn't done ANY research beforehand. Without that research, I really couldn't ask any meaningful questions -- and I was sort of in a state of dumb shock. The doctor said appointments were being made with radiation & chemo docs next week. Then he left, probably to prep for his next surgery of the day.

I went back to the waiting room to wait for the call to meet Tom after his initial recovery from the anesthetic. So about 45 minutes later I went to Tom's new room in Recovery. He was "awake" but still groggy, of course, and for the next hour I really didn't know exactly how alert he was -- plus he couldn't TALK. So I didn't tell him at that time. At some point I left to find a rest room, and on my way back, I went over to the nurse at the nursing station and asked her what key words I should use to research Tom's cancer. (The doctor never actual said "vocal cord" or "glottal" or "supra or subglottal" or what stage.) She started to talk, then said, "Let's talk over here..." and I figured she was heading to a more private spot than the nurses' station. But she led me into the entrance of Tom's room and then started right in about "vocal cord cancer" -- that being the first Tom had heard about it.

Heck of a way to break it to him!

I asked him later if he was surprised and he shook his head violently up and down -- yes!

My assumption, based on the little the surgeon said and my research since, is that it is squamous cell carcinoma of the vocal cord (true cord) and not supra glottal or (rare) sub glottal. We have no idea how far advanced it is or what the doctor suggests as treatment. Tom has a Wednesday appointment with the radiation guy and, as it's my day off, believe me, I'm gonna be there with him and ask a hell of a lot of questions. And those questions are going to be guided a lot by what Kendall can tell us.

Linn

Linn-

Kendall and other cancer survivors are probably your best resource at this time.

Such "news" does focus one's interest in medical facts and prognosis, Shit!

I still remember the shock when I heard 30 years ago that my mother had been diagnosed with uterine cancer. She survived and is still creating art at the age of 92 but there was a very stressful year while there was an operation and radiation treatments to deal with.

I would recommend a second opinion before doing anything Linn. The Mass General info looks very interesting.

From Kendall's experience avoid radiation like the plague. It compromises the immune system as well as scarring the vocal cords.

j... every case is unique. I know Linn and Tom will use every resource and every suggestion and go forth armed with questions and research and so on.

But, in the end, the docs know more that anyone else and armed with those resources and questions, Tom and Linn and the docs will make the best decisions possible.

I just know that the best that can be will be.

Gnu - the docs thought that they knew the best way forward for Kendall. Unfortunately a lot of them aren't totally up to date with the latest methods. If Kendall had been told what radiation would do he would not have taken that option. It was presented to him as the lesser of two evils, that or chemotherapy. At least chemo would have not caused the lifelong aftereffects that he now has to live with and the cancer returned within a couple of years.

His laser surgery excised the cancer completely on that vocal cord. He was unlucky that another cancer developed on the other vocal cord.

Hindsight is 20/20.
I spoke with Tom and Linn today. Linn did most of the talking. Tom is ready to meet with the doctors tomorrow or at least speak by phone and set up a meeting to review all his options. He and Linn plan to speak with Kendall to get his perspective on the whole thing. It sounds as if his doctors are ready to start radiation treatment asap. So Linn has her research work cut out for her.

Gnu, I believe that these doctors think they know what is best. Tom is a professional singer. At the very least he needs a second opinion as to treatment. Lasar, for example, was not available when Kendall was diagnosed. If it is an option for Tom (only the doctors can determine that),it does far less damage to both the vocal cords and the immune system.

So Linn will ask lots of questions, get all their options mapped out and decide what is in Tom's best interest both short and long term. Meantime, we can only offer support. I don't envy them the next few months. I don't envy Linn Tom's curmudgeonliness for the next month or two. LOL

On a happier note, Jacqui and I went yard saling. When Linn and Tom are in a happier place, we have found the most revolting piece of hideobilia to date and it has their name on it.

He's got appointments to to see the radiation oncologist and the chemo oncologist. He hasn't spoken to them yet and they probably hadn't evaluated him at all when the appointments were made and they are separate appointments. Why the hell isn't there one big-cheese oncologist over-seeing this? Hell, the cancer was probably all removed but his oncologists have metastasized!

Sorry. Not funny, just frustrating.

BTW, Bill Morrissey's song "Live Free Or Die" was recorded in Tom's living room when he and his ex-wife lived in Epping, before they built the house here in Nottingham.

Tom was still under post-op orders not to talk yesterday (to reduce scar tissue formation after biopsy). He's supposed to limit his talking for two weeks.

Just confirmed the appointments and info (or rather lack of it) that the hospital gave us Friday -- they had the radiological oncologist's name wrong & NO contact phone # and the wrong location AND phone number for the chemo guy. Turns out, they are both in the same cancer center at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Tom's consultation is with Dr. Singh tomorrow -- he's the radiology oncologist.

I'm taking tips from Jacqui & Kendall -- and tape recording the entire consultation. Unless they can GUARANTEE that radiation won't damage his vocal cords, they ain't touchin' him! I need more info (probably from his nose & throat guy -- also unavailable over the long holiday weekend) but then we will probably make an appointment at Mass General -- they are on the cutting edge of treatment without undue damage to the voice.

Most of these doctors just don't seem to understand that, yes, it's important to get rid of the cancer and keep Tom alive and healthy, but it's also JUST AS IMPORTANT to preserve as much as possible the voice of a professional singer and musician.

Meanwhile, I've gotta scoot out of the house early and see MY doctor this morning about an annoying little problem before heading to work (12-8) -- that means I can't start the day with the comics! Argh!!!

Today's the consult (1 p.m.) with Dr. Singh who, I believe, is a radiological oncologist. Despite the misspelling of his name (Fingh) and no contact information given on the "informational" sheet from the hospital post-op Friday, we found him -- he works out of the Seacoast Cancer Center at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover. Seacoast Cancer Center
(Where Tom had the biopsy done.)

It's a consultation -- we're armed with a lot of research, very helpful information from Kendall & Jacqui (plus we'll talk face to face with Kendall this weekend), and a whole bunch of question. I'm taking notes and intending to tape record the entire session.

More than likely, later this afternoon we will make an appointment for a consultation at Mass General's Voice Center. Tom also has an appointment with Dr. Paul who, according to the info at the WD site, is a oncologist/hemotologist.

I'm having trouble finding more info on Dr. Singh -- other than he has 10 years experience and was graduated from a 3-star medical school.

More later,
Linn

Ha! (re: the Travelocity guy)

Our Dr. Singh is wonderfully communicative, knowledgable, and I'm sure is more than competent in his field. He gave us the information we were REALLY needing and seemed genuinely happy that I'd done a lot of preliminary research (though he said taping the consultation is against policy). He explained everything very well and I am sure he is an excellent radiology oncologist.

Most importantly, he confirmed that Tom's cancer is EARLY STAGE squamous cell cancer of the true cords -- an area with almost no lymphatic connection and therefore the cancer is highly unlikely to spread. And that this is a highly survivable form of cancer.

That being said, he readily admits that preservation of a singer's voice is NOT his area of expertise, nor are treatments other than radiation. So we are definitely going to get a second opinion at the Voice Center at Mass General in Boston.

But right now, I'm zonked. It was a long and intense afternoon. (We also talked to a patient advocate about the disappointments in communication after Friday's surgery so that sort of thing can get fixed, and help on another issue.) Then we went to pick up some prescriptions and the one MY doctor sent over to the pharmacy evidently disappeared in cyberspace. Stopped at my doctor's office just down the road towards home, but the office had just closed for the day. So this means at least a couple more days without relief from an annoying resilient rash under my right boob.

Tom just discovered he forgot to pick up Scotch (to be used very moderately) so I'm heading back to Lee Circle and might as well get a pizza for supper at the same time.

Just got dressed again and put my contacts back in.

After Tom left the consultation, he stopped to pick up an Rx from his doctor at the building around the corner. I waited in the car, parked a dozen spots down from the door. Tom made it back as far as a picnic bench halfway -- his legs hurt too much to walk further. From the examination chair he had been in? His muscles going through another round of post-surgery aches?

We stopped at the grocery store and both went in, but Tom couldn't stand at the deli counter to get the low sodium cheese -- he went back to the store and I finished picking up what I thought would be dinner. Ended up coming back to the vicinity to pick up a pizza.

Okay, now, just after talking to Micca (nope, not Micca's fault) Tom came up to lie down and see if the pain & tingling (like his legs want to keep falling asleep) goes away or if I need to take him to the ER (or maybe the new facility at Lee Circle has an Emergency Walk-In service).

I hear him moving around upstairs. Not sure what that means.

Later,
Linn

Okay. We were too late to go to the Urgent Care Walk-In at Lee Circle (brand new, affiliated with Wentworth-Douglass). Tom called the ER at W-D who put him in touch with the after hours connection at Avis-Goodwin, which is his primary care. She called him back and said he'd probably be more comfortable at home and that the pain was probably still due to the anesthesia (and "manhandling" during surgery) from Friday and was probably triggered by sitting in the diagnostic chair at the consultation today.

I just got off the phone from a half hour survey on healthcare & issues sponsored by New Hampshire Health & Human Services. Arghhhhhhh!!!! Wrong questions, asking for the wrong answers -- i.e. "none of the above" not accepted; real case specifics not accepted -- only specified answers without qualification. I DO have the number of the coordinator. Poor surveyor is prolly being paid minimum wage and is under orders to stick strictly to the script. No variations allowed. No real gathering of information allowed.

I'm going upstairs and read, have another sherry, and try to slow down. Pop a benedryl to try to sleep through the night.

G'night!

If I had to start over I would go back to Mass. General and have laser surgery. No radiation or Chemo.

Spent almost all of the time at The Press Room Friday night going over (and over, and over) the whole story with a bunch of people. Tom is still, of course, under orders to talk lightly for the next week or so, but he did do some talking over the general din. Also got to talk to a couple other wives in the club -- the Wives of Husbands Who Have Gone Through Major or Life-Threatening Medical Problems Club -- including Justine. That's the core of MY support group.

Haven't had a chance yet to send out an email update to friends not Mudcat regulars or Facebook friends. Yesterday, I think, I just wanted to NOT deal with it. (Since we didn't go to the lighthouse event, I defrosted the upstairs fridge and went through magazines before getting rid of them. All I could handle for the day.) Also discovered that some of my FB friends (or at least one) missed the whole announcement, etc. cuz she's got way too many FB friends and things like that get missed.

Work today, then maybe get out that email. Tomorrow we meet with another oncologist (I think he's the chemo guy) at Seacoast Cancer Center at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Informational only -- since we're probably going to go with treatment at Mass General. We see them on Sept. 23rd.

Updating here, but haven't yet had a chance to inform or update all those friends not on Mudcat or Facebook; sigh.

Stopping on the way home from the hospital this afternoon at Dover's health food store to pick up some Bache's Elm -- surprise, surprise; I'm feeling a wee bit overextended...

And my boss managed to poison himself on Friday removing anti-reflective coating from a customer's lenses. Too macho to wear rubber gloves using hydrofluoric acid. Arghhhhh! (Men!)

From Wikipedia (OK maybe it's an exaggeration!):
The danger in handling hydrofluoric acid is extreme, as skin saturation with the acid in areas of only 25 square inches (160 cm2) may be relatively painless, yet ultimately fatal. High concentrations of hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen fluoride gas will also quickly destroy the corneas of the eyes.

So is he in the hospital too? And will you finally be forced to work paid overtime?

Today was basically nothing but good news.

Tom saw Dr. O'Day, his nose & throat guy who did the biopsy, before seeing Dr. Paul, who would be his chemo guy if he needed chemo.

Dr. O'Day had the results of the biopsy -- it's even earlier stage than suspected, and he DOESN'T recommend either radiation or chemo. He'd be happy to do the necessary surgery -- but has no problem with the fact that Tom will be going to Mass General where they are experienced in preserving a singer's voice while eradicating the cancer.

Tom ain't out of the woods yet, but the prognostication is even better than we've believed the past two weeks.

Now, if he can just get rid of the residual leg aches and pain when walking that is the dregs of the anesthesia. Dr. O'Day said it might take two weeks after the surgery. Because of the location and nature of the surgery, Tom had to be practically paralyzed.

If you can get some of THIS it will work wonders on muscle pain, esp. due to stress. I swear by it and have used it for years. Whatever is out of stressed, be careful, as you may aggravate it more with certain types of exercise. If you can find the time and dosh to get a good massage, please do. It will also help.

I took a vacation day today to sort of head off at the pass any stress-related physical problems that might turn up as a result of my feelings of over-extendedness. Was on the company optech conference call this morning, but maybe I can get some de-cluttering done around the house to help me feel a bit more relaxed. Picking up Bache's Elm at Portsmouth Health Food today (since nobody else around seemed to stock anything but Rescue Remedy). Slept through the night -- and that's a GOOD thing.

The body sometimes stays stressed even when the brain figures things are working out okay. Sigh.

If my original surgeon had gone to work 9 months earlier I might have better news. He wasted 9 months commenting on the obvious and I finally dumped him for one who wanted to work.By then it had advanced enough to almost destroy the right vocal cord.

Sorry, Sins -- this is the guy who LITERALLY wrote (and is still writing) the book on preserving the voice -- Steven M. Zeitels, MD, FACS. (Sorry, we JUST got home, wolfed a steak & cheese sub, got a whole bunch of other stuff to do -- don't have time to make blue clickies.)

http://web.mit.edu/shbt/research/citations/zeitels_s_1.html
http://www.vitals.com/doctors/Dr_Steven_Zeitels.html

Etcet Etcet.

Basically Tom's right vocal cord is a goner -- good thing Tom's an old Leftie. Surgery is set for Oct. 20th at Mass General. Tom will stay overnight in the hospital, and we need to stay in Boston -- close to the hospital -- from the Tuesday of the surgery until Friday. Basically Dr. Zeitel will remove the cancerous tissue from the right vocal cord -- that's most of the cord. I watched while they took all the pictures (with a tiny camera snaked through Tom's throat and nose & displayed on the screen next to Tom -- who knew better than to look). The tumor is a big irregular globby thing bubbling up from the cord. This endoscopic partial laryngectomy will be the first procedure.

Then, in several more procedures, he will (this, I think, is where the magic happens), he will rebuild the area of the right vocal cord so that the intact LEFT cord can play off the area and do its thing. Then, I imagine, there will be a lot of voice therapy.

All I've got time for right now -- got a pile of reading to do, too.

Here's another thing to read --

From Boston Magazine

I think some of us wives ought to form a support group -- Karen, Jacqui, Justine -- Sinsull's been there, too.

I'm feeling the strain and Tom's still weeks away from the surgery. Gotta check today how many vacation days I have left. (At least most of the restorative stuff will be done after the first of the year.)

Just heard from Dr. Zeitel's office -- he wants Tom there for tests the day before the surgery, so we'll have to stay at a Boston hotel close to the hospital for 4 nights and I'll need to take that whole M-F week off from work, throwing the strain on my co-workers.

Everything will work out fine -- no problems on the work front. I have even more paid time off available than I thought, plus I work with two really great people. It's just that the company keeps us a bit short staffed at best (to better sell reasonably priced eyeglasses) that taking time off does inconvenience my co-workers.

Haven't started calling to get prices from the hotel list that the doctor's office gave us -- they are all either for patients only or give medical discounts. And I'm sure my up-the-hill neighbor will check on the cats midweek to make sure they haven't gulped all their food or spilled their water on the floor. (And give them reassurances that we haven't abandoned them.)

My sister has offered some financial assistance if we need it. I don't think Tom will be up to playing tourist, so I intend to bring my semi-antique laptop and get some writing accomplished, and maybe some jewelry projects to finally get done, and some reading material.

I've got a wi-fi card for the laptop, but the box is old and slow, so I don't know if I'll be online for the week.

It'll all work out.

Dr. Zeitels said after the surgery, Tom's voice will be rather "breathy" until he starts the reconstruction procedures. And Tom will have some mouth pain for a few days afterwards because of all the gear in his mouth and down his throat.

Tom's been having some foot and leg pain which has really been causing problems walking -- he's seeing his primary care doc about that tomorrow. I'm thinking it might be a dropped metatarsal... Plus he'll be using my car cuz his car won't get new brakes til next Wednesday. Nothing like EVERYTHING going on at once.

Gotta go do the name tags for the PMFF and then maybe get some sleep. Tomorrow's a pretty full day -- and then there's the festival this weekend.

Dear Tom and Linn -

I just read this thread from top to bottom. I am so sorry that you are going through all of this. I will add my energy into the catter's mix and direct it up N'Hampshire way.

As I read these threads two things came to mind:

1) Tom would probably benefit from a check up with an osteophathic physician. Chances are pretty good he got tossed around a bit in recovery. Osteo physicians have more medical training than chiropractors. Pins, needles, etc. could be signs of spinal misalignment and nerve pinching.

2) I am worried about Linn's rash. Did you get it checked out? Having had my life severely impacted by Lyme disease (for the past 23 years) I was concerned when I read about the rash. During this time of stress, don't forget to take care of you too.

If you find yourselves looking to get out and about, consider yourselves invited to spend some time in Warren, RI (smallest town in the smallest county in the smallest state). It's a sweet place for a little rest and relaxation. You can find me here through a PM.

Sending all the best wishes for your health and humor-
Love too,
Joyce Katzberg

Tom saw his doctor today about his foot pain -- he evidently stepped on something and has an infection. This is something that needs (and is getting) immediate attention because he has replacement heart parts (besides the fact that he's in pain).

Nothing like everything happening all at once -- his car is scheduled to get new brakes on Wednesday, he's got stuff that needs to be done prior to his cancer surgery in October, and, oh, yeah, it's the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival and it hurts to walk.

My rash has been taken care of. I saw my doctor a couple weeks ago when what I thought was the "usual" fungal irritation under a breast after a couple weeks of intense humidity didn't respond to ANY treatment that I tried. Turned out to be a yeast infection. (That's a first for me; never had one of any sort before and never actually heard of it causing an irritation in a, uh, "swampy" place like under my boob, before) One pill. All gone.

Great kick-off session at The Press Room tonight with a lot of the performers arriving early for the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival. The energy was incredible. I sang a couple songs, but mostly let the "out of towners" have at it. I played social butterfly passing out programs and talking up the festival (and relaying info about Tom) to the Press Room population. "Saved" my voice (uh huh -- talking over the din is no picnic) for tomorrow and Sunday.

Gotta wind down and get some sleep.

Linn

One mindfully in the moment. Just noticing what arises. Deep acceptance of the reality of the moment and following the breath. Breathing happens. The breath breathes itself. Moment-to-moment, the breath breathes in, and the breath breathes out.

Thoughts arise into awareness and then move on, to be replaced by other thoughts. Emotions, body sensations, do the same. In the meantime, the breath breathes itself. The heart beats.

Your co-workers will manage, and will feel good about themselves for coming through in a clutch situation, and will also feel good if they know that you accept their willingness to step up as what they can do to be supportive.

Ain't it the truth that life is one thing after the other, sometimes several things after the other, rushing at you like a rogue wave. Don't resist the wave. Let it wash over you, and either flow with it or dive under it. Resistance adds misery to pain, turns inevitable stress into distress, and intensifies inevitable distress.

Be here now.

Or completely ignore this post, if that is what your "wise mind" tells you to do.

And remember, at least metaphorically....no one has ever died from oven crud.

Janie

Note to self - don't post to threads I take seriously after 3 glasses of wine on a Friday night.

Sorry for the pompous advice of last night, Tom and Linn. But I will say, don't forget to breathe.

You too, 'Spaw;^)

Actually, Janie, that advice would be perfect for just about anyone besides Linn. Our Batgoddess is a bit batty and her mind runs back and forth at astromonical speeds sometimes recycling old info, sometimes, misplacing new info. but always on the move. If she stopped to breathe I think she might die.

One trick that does work is to force her to inflate a blow up lobster or moose. But that's mostly breathing out. I plan to supply her with about 50 beach balls to inflate while she waits for Tom to get out of surgery.

As to Spaw, MacKenzie and gnu - CELLAR! the whole lot of you. And don't come back up until you have sonethuing nice to say to Janie.

Janie, I've got plenty of oven crud...and cobwebs festooned from the beams, and not just dust Bun-zillas under furniture but dust that kicks up around your ankles when you walk across the room. I don't stress about house cleaning. (In general -- I DO like to neatify a bit before guests arrive -- and I really strive to maybe not have the same piles o' stuff in the same places from one year to the next.)

It's nothing like everything all at once -- cancer diagnosis, treatment plans, getting the Portsmouth Maritime Festival stuff done and the festival guided through 2+ days, my work schedule, Tom's foot infection making walking painful, AND, just in case things are going too smoothly, Tom's car needs brakes. (Wednesday -- sort of his birthday present to himself. Oh, yeah, speaking of which, his car needs to be registered and inspected, and I think he has to renew his driver's license.)

Ya do what ya gotta do. And right now something needs doing and I have to go off and do it.

Linn

You can let 'em out of the cellar now, Sins. When my inner pompous ass emerges, it is only fitting that it gets shot at.

Beachballs? Great idea! After all, before one can exhale, one must inhale.

Still sending good energy (on calm, low frequencies) to Tom and Linn.

I don't eat cold cereals with or without piss.

As to your being lumped in with the other miscreants - I will tell you what my father would say when one of got blamed and punished for something we didn't do.
"Now do something!"

First class argument against capital punishment.

Sorry Garry. I misunderstood you.

Please don't piss in my corn flakes or anywhere else. I am still trying to keep up with Alice's donations.

I don't do cold cereals, either -- have hated them since childhood.

But...I have a friend who claimed she lived for awhile on gin and cornflakes. She didn't actually SAY the gin was ON the cornflakes...

I have either a bran and dried fruits with oatmeal, drowned in fresh cold WHOLE milk, or porridge for breakfast, every morning.
Please note the porridge has salt in it and none of your crappy additives or sweeteners.
It is also shrouded in cold, fresh, WHOLE milk.

Huh! Spend a few (weeks?) (Months?) away from the Mudcat and everything goes to hell.

I hope things are going well. Good luck on cutting out the cancer and getting the voice back. I feel bad that I didn't see this thread earlier.

Maybe I shouldn't have moved away... but then I never would have met Wakana... but I'd still be there where I can help my friends...

There's no answer.

Good luck Linn and Tom.

Looking into the cereal urination situation..........I think the problem here is that y'all have the expression wrong. Perhaps in some deep, dark, time in ages past, someone did say "pee in your cornflakes" but the expression just kinda' laid there, lacking something, much like soggy corn flakes themselves. Then it was updated and caught on in the newer, more alliterative form......."Piss in your Post Toasties."

You can readily see the improvement here and I have personally heard it that way since the 50's. I never heard the cornflake liine til sometime later and assumed the user was just uneducated in the nuances of the language and the insult.

So now you are all free to Piss in your Post Toasties, just keep it out of mine...................

Spaw

Linn - I have had great success healing persistant infections by packing them in honey and wrapping them for a while. The bacteria eats the honey instead of skin.

Also good to do extra Vitamin C.

One of them thar old wives' things.

Works.

For a purely "witchy" thing - trace the area where the infection is. Using a piece of incense or, if you are inclined, a cigarette, make a hole where the infection is. Put this up on the fridge or someplace where you will see it frequently out of the corner of your eye. Helps to direct your own subconscious to the task of healing.

Congrats on getting the festival done. From all reports, it was mighty fine.

As the song says "step by step, the longest march can be won"
I know it's a mine workers' song but if you think about it, it's really about accomplishing anything through the help of community.

We're here for you and Tom.

Joyce

Did you mean trace onto a piece of paper and then burn a hole in the paper? I love these kinds of things, but my literal visualiser sometimes trips up...I'm thinking, yeah, burning the infection would sure do something, then I am scratching my head over how I am going to display that on my fridge! Ya see what I mean?**big grin** (Just teasing.)

Tom and Linn, still giving thanks here.

Dear Kat -

LOL!

Yes, please trace onto a piece of paper - otherwise, you'd have a bloody mess, eh? Counter-productive.

Well... I would not discount it, s4p. Once, when I was young and foolish, I had a wart on my arm. I was dating a lass who was drop dead gorgeous. She drew a circle around the wart and told me not to wash the ink off. I laughed in disbelief. She became cross and told me if I washed off the ink, no, ah, er, you know, for a "WHILE". Four days later, no wart. Not a word of lie.
