Subject: Do you know of a Beginners Tune Session?
From: Les in Chorlton
Date: 05 Sep 09 - 03:34 AM

Thanks to all those who contributed to the previous thread concerning Beginners and Improvers Tune Sessions (BAITS).

I think it would be useful to establish a list of all the BAITS that take place through the year, as opposed to those at festivals, in the UK.

If you know of one can you respond here with details?

Cheers

L in C
The last Tuesday of the month
The Beech Inn, Beech Road, Chorlton, Manchester

2nd Thursday of the month at the Sycamore, New Mill Rd, Holmfirth and 3rd Thursday at the Red Lion, Sheffield Rd, Jackson Bridge, Nr Holmfirth. Neither is aimed particularly at beginners but we're a fairly welcoming bunch ( I hope) who realise that we all started somewhere.

I thought the Bennets one had stopped some time ago? There have been other venues for it since, but nothing permanent yet.

. 9 pm (phone 01244 675860)

All welcome

Free Butties & Mystery Guest every week!

we've a number of beginners & improvers who attend regularly & comprise a couple of guitar learners, whistlers, fiddlers.

We don't have a special separate time for them to perform but integrate their efforts into the main sesh by sympathetic/ slowed down accompaniments + advice & tips both during & afterwards

We do a few tunes at the song session and a few songs at the tune sesssion. We have asked people to sing towards the end of the tune session and if the are ok with 15 musicians joining in - much fun!

Cheers

Probably a granny or two.

Leave my thread alone unless you know a BAITS - It will run amok with jokers in no time.

But good joke all the same

Impressive website alex s. Would somebody playing quite slowly get a chance to play something quite slowly with others?

Absolutely, Les. We positively welcome beginners and have over the years seen a number of players start out with us and eventually become good musicians. Nobody minds how slow you may be - we're just glad to see you.

Ring or PM me if you want to discuss this further. Cheers. alex s.

Sorry Les, I didn't address the question properly. We are all very happy to play along at whatever speed you can manage - we know there's safety in numbers and it can be a great confidence booster to know your mistakes will not be heard in dreadful isolation! Cheers.

'LEWES FAVOURITES' PRACTICE SESSION IS AT THE CROWN, NOT THE ELEPHANT & CASTLE IN SEPTEMBER

Having sent our September notices out in a bit of a hurry, I apologise for having given the wrong venue. The English tunes practice session on Tuesday 22nd. September will be at The Crown Inn, 191, High Street, Lewes BN7 2NA (http://www.crowninnlewes.co.uk/) and not at the Elephant & Castle. We're back at the Elephant in October.

There's a pretty good beginner's session every Monday in Coventry at the Beer Engine, which later becomes a very friendly and inclusive English (ish) session for more advanced players. As you'd expect from the name of the pub, the beer is quite good! More details at http://www.covtrad.co.uk/

Cheers

Chris

As well as the Tuesdays session in the Tiger, Lairgate, Beverley, some beginners do come to the Friday session which is a mixed session. If any beginners come there are always some tunes played slower, and plenty of tunes are played that are in the Tuesday book in any case. It starts later than Tuesdays - around 9pm.

Our local Archway School, Stroud is doing Sat morning get-togethers - mostly youngsters and what I assume were teachers. Well supported. But adults get a go on Wednesdays during term-time. I may have more details later.
