I'll be watching this thread with interest. Jody certainly had an impact on a lot of musicians, as well as family members I'm sure. He's not the kind of man you'd ever forget.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Howdy all -

I'd like to introduce myself - I am Jody's eldest daughter, Joyce (Katzberg). I am new to Mudcat and I'm very glad that my good friend the Seagoddess has been so kind as to put up a notice about Barry Mazors' book about Jimmie Rodgers.

I haven't read it yet but I am looking forward to seeing how Barry Mazor talks about Jody's contributions to the evolution of the song "Muleskinner Blues" which my dad recorded as "Good Morning Captain". My sister, Kate Katzberg has recently been doing a bang up job of the song herself.

I know that he does mention Jody working with George Martin when we lived in England. I'm glad that he included that fact as there have been many people over the years who have doubted that my father did all of the things he said he had. Jody was quite an eclectic guy with a wide variety of life experiences. Some of Jody's stories might have seemed far fetched but he was a scrupulously honest man and usually downplayed rather than overplayed his experiences. He led a singularly interesting life.

I too wish that he had lived long enough to see this book come out. When I spoke with Mr. Mazor he was genuinely impressed with Jody's genre bending capacities. I'm sure he would have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the Cranky Yankee himself.

Thanks again to the Goddess for letting you all know the book is out. Thank you to all of you who were his online friends. I know he loved this website and community and tried to get me to join for years. I look forward to checking in with you all.

Your sister in song,
Joyce Katzberg

I wish this had been published while Jody was still alive. He would have enjoyed this. The book has been added to my wish list.

Yay! Thanks for clearing this all up and making it right. And while we are making things 'perfectly clear,' I want to note that the statement about Jody's having 'had a direction-altering influence on four separate styles of music - skiffle, rock-a-billy, bluegrass and country' is not a quote from the book, but is a statement that was made by the author to Jody's daughter, Joyce, during an interview for the book. I haven't read the book in its entirety yet, so cannot comment upon its inclusion. I can, however, verify that the statement was indeed made by Mr. Mazor, who also added that he felt a book should be written about Jody himself.

Hi, Cindy - It's nice to hear tell of Jody again. I had many enjoyable message exchanges with him, and he helped me a lot in my getting used to being married to a Rhode Islander.

This is the third thread you've started on this subject - I've deleted the other two and combined the titles as best I can. Please keep any further discussion in this one thread.

Also, please note that we do not allow ALLCAPS in thread titles.

Thanks.

Subject: JODY GIBSON in new Jimmie Rodgers book
From: seagoddess
Date: 05 Sep 09 - 10:38 AM

JIMMIE RODGERS fans, as well as fans and friends of Mudcat's late friend JODY GIBSON (CRANKY YANKEE) will want to check out this new release by researcher and author, Barry Mazor. "MEETING JIMMIE RODGERS: HOW AMERICA'S ORIGINAL ROOTS MUSIC HERO CHANGED THE POP SOUNDS OF A CENTURY" is a fresh, vibrant look at one of America's most popular and influential musical artists, and includes some fascinating research and comments about JODY!

JODY GIBSON, according to the author, really did work with GEORGE MARTIN while JODY was living in the UK, and also according to the author, "had a direction-altering influence on four separate styles of music - skiffle, rock-a-billy, bluegrass and country".

Way to go, JODY! I can just hear those banjo strings "woohooing" now!

A generous Preview of the book, including some references to JODY, can be viewed at: http://books.google.com/books?id=wHHoRDCFO6YC&printsec=frontcover

Check it out!

Cindy
