From today's news:
Man drowns in Galway Bay accident. Saturday, 5 September 2009 22:49
A man has died and his brother has been rescued following a boating accident in Galway Bay this morning.

The two men were onboard a hooker which capsized shortly after it left the village of Kinvara at 10am.

The man who died has been named as 67-year-old Johnny Sheáin Jeaic MacDonncha, a fisherman from Carna in Connemara.

His brother Josie (66), was rescued after the 'McHugh' capsized and is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
The hooker was about two miles out to sea, en route to Rossaveal, when it got into difficulty.

A crewman from another Galway hooker which was accompanying the stricken vessel dived into the sea and recovered the two men, however efforts to revive the 67-year-old were unsuccessful.

There is a fine singer named Josie Sheáin Jeaic MacDonncha. Can anyone throw some light on this

They were aboard a "Hooker"? There's that pesky language thing again.

Yes it is: From Leitrim Observer website

Sailor drowns after boat capsizes
An experienced sailor drowned and his brother was rescued when their boat capsized off the Irish coast.
Four other people were treated in hospital after they tried to save the men when the Galway Hooker - a traditional sailing vessel - sank in Galway Bay at around 10.30am. The dead man was named locally as Johnny Sheain Jeaic Mac Donncha, a 67-year-old from Carna in Galway. His brother, famous Sean-nos singer Josie Sheain Jeaic Mac Donncha, 66, was airlifted to hospital where he is recovering.

Our deepest sympathies to Josie

I haven't seen Josie in donkey's years, but he's a smashing bloke. I hope he's alright.

Fergie

The boat was a gleoiteog - smaller and more open than the one (a leath-bhád?) in the fine photo. The accident happened off Kilcolgan Point i.e. shortly after they had left the comparative shelter of Kinvara Bay. Conditions were, as far as I know, no worse than fresh and blustery - but there had been a blow the previous night so there may well have been a big sea running.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis,

Máirtín Ó Riain (nach maireann faoi láthair i dtír na mudcats!).
