Subject: RE: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: kendall Date: 21 Sep 09 - 04:08 PM Here's one from a shy mud catter who wishes to remain anonymous. I wished for roses from my dearie, A gift to show your love is true, An amber ring to say you love me. You only kissed me tenderly. The night is cold and I am weary I watch you dream the long night through. I lie awake and sleep escapes me And so I listen to you breathe. And as you sleep I say, "I love you" There is no star I'd place above you. When you awake I'll work beside you. You are my darling dear, goodnight. The years have bloomed for us more sweetly Than all the fragrant roses do. Your tender kiss suits me completely You hold me close to comfort me. Your callused hands grow flowers and berries, Ripe apples, pears and peaches too. You gather up the garden bounty: All that you have you give to me. And as you sleep I say, "I love you" There is no star I'd place above you. When you awake I'll work beside you. You are my darling dear, goodnight. A steadfast heart is what you give me, Upon my hand a wedding ring. The songs I have your courage brings me I need no jewels from the sea. What price the light that only joy sees; The loving trust that gives me wings? You are my true love here beside me. I hold your hand and fall asleep. And as we sleep I say, "I love you" There is no star I'd place above you. When we awake I'll work beside you. You are my darling dear. Goodnight. maeve Copyright 2009 Reply - P |

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY (Queen) From: Rockhen Date: 19 Sep 09 - 08:53 PM So many beautiful songs...one of my favourites is Queen's YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY but there are so many songs which make me blub, (in a good way!) :-) If you are not a music lover, I wonder if songs have the same overpowering and amazing impact... Without the music, the words are not quite the same but I still love 'em! Words and music by Freddie Mercury Oooh oooh take it take it all away Oooh ooh take my breath away Oooh ooh yoooo take my breath away Look into my eyes and you'll see I'm the only one You've captured my love stolen my heart Changed my life Every time you make a move you destroy my mind And the way you touch I lose control and shiver deep inside You take my breath away You can reduce me to tears with a single sigh Ev'ry breath that you take Any sound that you make is a whisper in my ear I could give up all my life for just one kiss I would surely die if you dismiss me from your love You take my breath away So please don't go Don't leave me here all by myself I get ever so lonely from time to time I will find you anywhere you go I'll be right behind you Right until the ends of the earth I'll get no sleep until I find you To tell you that you just take my breath away I will find you anywhere you go Right until the ends of the earth I'll get no sleep until I find you To tell you when I've found you I love you Take my breath take my breath ... away |

Subject: Lyr Add: ORDINARY LOVE SONG (Charlie King) From: sing4peace Date: 13 Sep 09 - 09:29 PM I love this one by Charlie King. I've sung it for a few weddings. So far they're all still going strong. ORDINARY LOVE SONG I grew up on love songs Great undying love songs I thought finding love would make all things new But now I find that love can be hidden in the day Or lying quiet in the nights that I spend with you In ordinary love with you. They say love can move mountains I'm very bad at mountains I never thought my love could fill this earth Instead it trickles slowly In habits plain and lowly In common kitchen measures I gauge its worth This ordinary love for you. Bridge: No one's writing ballads to ordinary love I wonder if it can be true Yet it seems to grow this ordinary love That's why I wrote this song for you. Great lovers are romantic I'm not very romantic I find it hard to tell you what I hope you know It's just that when you're present It's comfortable and pleasant And I thought that it was time that I told you so I ordinarily love you With an ordinary love for you. ------ Joyce |
Subject: Lyr Add: A DAISY A DAY (Judd Strunk) From: kendall Date: 13 Sep 09 - 07:39 PM Phoebe Snow is one of my all time favorites, but here is another: A DAISY A DAY by Judd Strunk He remembers the first time he met her He remembers the first thing she said He remembers the first time he held her And the night she came to his bed He remembers her sweet way of saying "Honey, has something gone wrong"? He remembers the fun and the teasing And the reason he wrote her this song. Chorus I'll give you a Daisy a day dear I'll give you a Daisy a day I'll love you until the rivers run still And the four winds we know blow away. They would walk down the street in the evening For years I would see them go by And the love that was more than the clothes that they wore Could be seen in the gleam in their eye As a kid they would take me for candy And I loved to go tagging along We'd hold hands as we walked to the corner And the old man would sing her his song. repeat chorus Now he walks down the street in the evening And he stops by the old candy store And I somehow believe he's believing He's holding her hand like before He feels all her love walking with him And he smiles at the things she might say Then the old man walks up to the hilltop And he gives her a Daisy a day. Repeat chorus. I get all sniffy when I hear or read this. |
Subject: Lyr Add: I SAW HER ON THE BUS (R. Knight) From: BobKnight Date: 13 Sep 09 - 06:31 PM Here's one with quite a few Scots words, but hopefully you'll get the general idea. I SAW HER ON THE BUS Copyright R. Knight 23/1/08 I saw her on the bus yesterday, As she got on and sat twa or three seats in front o' me. And I wondered if I spoke what she micht say, But I thocht better o' it and sat there quietly. As she looked oot I studied her reflection in the glass, And thocht sometimes an auld love, is best left in the past. This wis the face that I once kent sae weel, The face o' my first love, that once meant everything tae me. And here the lips that kissed me tenderly, That smiled on me sae sweetly, and spoke o' love tae me. As bonnie as she ever wis, the years had been sae kind, But sometimes auld regrets, are best left far behind. And sitting there I cast my memory back across the years, And wondered how a love like oors had come tae end in tears. For even efter a' the years gone by, There's a special place, within my hairt, I'll keep for her until the day I die. I could see a wee bit grey in her hair, The hair sae dark and lustrous, that once framed her face sae fair. And I wondered whit she'd think if I sat there, Wi' her twa seats behind me, but wid she really care. Or wid her hairt beat faster as mine did fin I saw her, And think sometimes auld memories are best left whaur they were. Then a' too soon she got up tae leave, I watched as she got aff the bus and stood there in the street. As the bus began tae move she noticed me, A casual glance, that caught my eye, surprised, she smiled sweetly. Then she reached oot her hand and touched the glass as I passed by, And I watched her in the distance, 'til she faded oot o' sight. I dinna s'pose ye'll understand, it's so hard tae explain, But I couldnae tak the chance that I micht fa' in love again, For even efter a' these years gone by, There's a special place, within my hairt, I'll keep for her until the day I die. Repeat: Until the day I die. |

Subject: Lyr Add: LANCELOT (Dave Carter) From: Jeri Date: 11 Sep 09 - 12:57 PM LANCELOT (© Dave Carter) Lancelot rode on a swayback mare He won in a card game up north somewhere He was bottom-out lonesome, he was too tired to care, Keepin' one step ahead of the rain Well, he blew into Broken Bow late last year, Talkin' up the vision of his lost Guinevere But he couldn't tell a grail from a glass of beer So he settled for Lady Elaine Singin' "yodelayhee, I ain't no untarnished Galahad Down from Arcadia like a dream in your head But gentle lady lend me the true heart I never had And I'll wash the years from your bed With all the salt tears I have shed," Lancelot said Well, mornin' came sleepy and mornin' came slow And the mirror revealed a face she didn't know And the last autumn robin was packin to go As another year slipped by the way So she rose and she dressed and she pushed back the night She put up her hair by the dawn's early light And the man in her bed was an eagle in flight And a crooked old crow in the hay Singin "yodelayhee, I ain't no untarnished Galahad Down from Arcadia like a dream in your head But gentle lady lend me the true heart I never had And I'll stain the lavenders red, With all of the good blood I've shed," Lancelot said Now bugles blow golden and banners fly blue But these days the castle's just drywall and glue And tiltin' at windmills is the best you can do With the black knight of time on your lawn So I wouldn't know if he left or he stayed, Prospered or starved by the promise he made Or maybe he straggled or maybe he strayed And the bright world went barrellin' on Singin "yodelayhee, I ain't no untarnished Galahad, Down from Arcadia like a dream in your head But gentle lady lend me the pure heart I never had, And I'll bring you roses and bread And we'll fashion gold out of lead, With all the illusions we shed," Lancelot said From daveandtracy.com |
Subject: RE: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: Jeri Date: 11 Sep 09 - 12:46 PM Li'l ol' cynical me loves "I Can't Make You Love Me," which I first heard from this group in that quirky little love story "Boxing Helena". Here's Bonnie Raitt singing it (with Bruce Hornsby on KB, I believe). There's something about popping a CD in your car and belting this out at the top of your lungs that just makes you feel better. At least until you realize your windows are down and your stopped at an intersection. When I'm not being cynical, I like Dave Carter's "Lancelot". No Dave Carter, but here's a version I found (some changes to the lyrics and tune). I mostly think that to listen to the smitten variety of love songs, you either have to be in love or masochistic. |

This is probably the first Dylan song I ever loved, and I still feel the same affection for the song to this day. (Not JUST b/c it recaptures a time in my life that was so young and loving). There is something so sincere, so aching, so poignant and so gentle in this song, it is like being touched by a kiss. |
