I'm glad "ggreen wellies" mentioned "45 Years" by Stan Rogers because thet's second on my list. Number 1 being (sorry, R-J) another Kate Wolf tune "The Trumpet Vine". We used both as backgground for our wedding video, along with "Plain And Simple Love" (Holly Near).

As traditional songs, I'd say The Turtle Dove / Ten Thousand Miles / My Love is Like A Red Red Rose and other variations on the theme.

Doesn't get more loving and devoted than that. My wife and I did actually consider having it engraved on our wedding rings, but realised it would have to be very very small.

By gosh, I'm going to throw in a mention of "I think of you" by Fred Rogers (of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.) Mr. Rogers was, in my opinion, quite a good songwriter, and I particularly like this one.

An interesting thread...I will certainly not dispute that Murdoch's "When I Cannot Sleep at Night" is an incredible song and certainly ranks up there with "Most Moving Love Song" distinction.

I do disagree, however, with his submission of Love Minus Zero/No Limit as a "moving" love song......if I was going for a Dylan song, I would suggest, "To Make You Feel My Love", from Time Out of Mind.

Other folk contributions would include some Eric Andersen songs including:
"Is It Really Love At All" , "Come To My Bedside My Darling" and "Lie With Me."

Contributions to this thread have mentioned Tom Paxton and one should not forget the incredible library of songs he has composed/written for his wife, Midge, including:
The First Song is for You
You Are Love
Me & A Couple of Angels
You're So Beautiful (my favorite)

If you want to hear a great love song, listen to Mary Chapin Carpenter's version of John Lennon's song, Grow Old With Me, from Party Dolls and Other Favorites.

These subjective superlative questions are difficult. One's own opinion is likely to be elusive and changeable. There are many types of love songs just as love itself takes on many forms. It may not be what you have in mind but this one's a corker.

One of my favorite love songs was Unchained Melody

But that scene with Whoopi Golberg channeling the deceased character played by Patrick Swazye in the movie "Ghost" kinda messed that song up for me.

For those who may be interested, here's some information about the song "Unchained Melody". Notice that it doesn't give the name of the song writer, an all too frequent practice that is discussed on this Mudcat thread: Forgotten writers of well-remembered songs

But I digressed. Here's that excerpt about "Unchained Melody":

"Unchained Melody" was written for the 1955 prison movie, "Unchained". The original recordings that came out soon after the movie were by Al Hibbler and by Roy Hamilton. Both were big radio hits that year. There was also a popular instrumental recording out by Les Baxter at the same time.

In 1963, a New York doo-wop group called Vito & The Salutations did an uptempo version of the song which got a lot of airplay, though it's very different from the usual ballad interpretations.

The most popular version of the song came out in 1965 by The Righteous Brothers. Though the label bore the duo's name, it was actually a solo vocal by the late Bobby Hatfield.

That recording resurfaced in 1990 when it was prominently featured in the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore/Whoopi Goldberg movie, "Ghost".

The song has been done by everyone from Willie Nelson to you name it but these are the most popular hit versions of the song".
