"The tides may cease to beat the shore, and the stars fall from the sky/ but I shall love you more and more, until the day I die..." Doesn't get more loving and devoted than that. My wife and I did actually consider having it engraved on our wedding rings, but realised it would have to be very very small. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ANOTHER TIME AND PLACE + AE FOND KISS From: Barry Finn Date: 09 Sep 09 - 02:01 AM This somehow disappeared One of my favorites ANOTHER TIME AND PLACE (Dave Van Ronk) When first I met you years ago, in another time and place, The thought came to my mind I'd never seen a kinder face, Nor warmer smile, nor gentler laugh, nor eyes so full of light. I'd be a fool if I didn't fall in love with you that night. We tramped around the world, my dear, our fortune was to roam. And each place I have been with you, that place has been my home. But as I wonder on alone with no place to abide, I'll be content for I was sent your wanderings by my side. Love that blossoms in the night can't stand the test of time. It comes and goes it ebbs and flows, no reason reach nor rhyme. But as each day becomes another day, each year another year, I'd trade a year in heaven for a day with you, my dear. The miles flow on and I am gone, to a wild and empty land, Where time is like an empty room and space an empty hand; And the things we did and the jokes we made are just echoes in the waste; But we'll meet again where those hills are green, in another time and place. Yes, we'll meet again where those hills are green, in another time and place. one of my other favorites is Ae Fond Kiss (Robert Burns) Ae fond kiss, and then we sever! Ae farewell, and then forever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and goans I'll wage thee. Who shall say that Fortune grieves him, While the star of hope she leaves him ? Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me, Dark despair around benights me. I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy: Nae thing could resist my Nancy! For to see her was to love her Love but her, and love for ever. Had we never lov'd sae kindly, Had we never lov'd sae blindly, Never met, never parted, We would ne'er been broken-hearted. Fare-thee-well, my first and fairest! Fare-thee-well, my best and dearest! Thine be ilka joy and treasure, Peace, enjoyment, love and pleasure! Ae fond kiss, and then we sever! Ae farewell, alas, for ever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee. Barry |
Subject: RE: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: KenM Date: 08 Sep 09 - 11:03 PM An interesting thread...I will certainly not dispute that Murdoch's "When I Cannot Sleep at Night" is an incredible song and certainly ranks up there with "Most Moving Love Song" distinction. I do disagree, however, with his submission of Love Minus Zero/No Limit as a "moving" love song......if I was going for a Dylan song, I would suggest, "To Make You Feel My Love", from Time Out of Mind. Other folk contributions would include some Eric Andersen songs including: "Is It Really Love At All" , "Come To My Bedside My Darling" and "Lie With Me." Contributions to this thread have mentioned Tom Paxton and one should not forget the incredible library of songs he has composed/written for his wife, Midge, including: The First Song is for You You Are Love Me & A Couple of Angels You're So Beautiful (my favorite) If you want to hear a great love song, listen to Mary Chapin Carpenter's version of John Lennon's song, Grow Old With Me, from Party Dolls and Other Favorites. Finally, this thread is dedicated to "non-folk contributors" who would include Sinatra: "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" "Angel Eyes" And, "The Nightingale sang in Barkeley Square" |
Subject: RE: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: Neil D Date: 08 Sep 09 - 10:56 PM These subjective superlative questions are difficult. One's own opinion is likely to be elusive and changeable. There are many types of love songs just as love itself takes on many forms. It may not be what you have in mind but this one's a corker. Subject: RE: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: Azizi Date: 08 Sep 09 - 09:26 PM frogprince, I'd love to hear your song. Is it on the Internet? ** My favorite love song by Bruce Murdoch-that I know has been recorded-is "Come Across To You". ** One of my favorite love songs was Unchained Melody But that scene with Whoopi Golberg channeling the deceased character played by Patrick Swazye in the movie "Ghost" kinda messed that song up for me. For those who may be interested, here's some information about the song "Unchained Melody". Notice that it doesn't give the name of the song writer, an all too frequent practice that is discussed on this Mudcat thread: Forgotten writers of well-remembered songs But I digressed. Here's that excerpt about "Unchained Melody": "Unchained Melody" was written for the 1955 prison movie, "Unchained". The original recordings that came out soon after the movie were by Al Hibbler and by Roy Hamilton. Both were big radio hits that year. There was also a popular instrumental recording out by Les Baxter at the same time. In 1963, a New York doo-wop group called Vito & The Salutations did an uptempo version of the song which got a lot of airplay, though it's very different from the usual ballad interpretations. The most popular version of the song came out in 1965 by The Righteous Brothers. Though the label bore the duo's name, it was actually a solo vocal by the late Bobby Hatfield. That recording resurfaced in 1990 when it was prominently featured in the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore/Whoopi Goldberg movie, "Ghost". The song has been done by everyone from Willie Nelson to you name it but these are the most popular hit versions of the song". http://en.allexperts.com/q/Oldies-2943/2009/8/unchained-melody.htm |
Subject: RE: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: Ebbie Date: 08 Sep 09 - 09:09 PM frogprince, those are great lyrics, not to mention great sentiments. However, Bruce's When I Cannot Sleep at Night has been my favorite - so far - of all. It has stayed with me from the first time I heard it. (Thanks, Peace) |
Subject: RE: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: frogprince Date: 08 Sep 09 - 08:49 PM No way on Earth can I pick just one. Bruce's "When I Cannot..." is now on my list along with: Ewan's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face "The Dutchman", by Michael Smith "Home to Me", by Saint Thomas Paxton "If Tomorrow Never Comes", the only Garth Brooks song that really speaks to me. Personally, I've written just one love song so far. |

Subject: Most Moving Love Song - folk or non-folk From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 08 Sep 09 - 05:38 PM For me, it's got to be Bruce's 'When I Cannot Sleep At Night' The touching emotion inside that song moves me so deeply, every time I hear it. "...When the words get in the way And my soul feels all undone When I don't know what to say Not to God or anyone I turn my head up to the sky And stare at outer space It's then I'd trade the Universe Just to touch your face When the words get in the way..."
