A bit of a thread drift, but I do love the idea of lifting stuff from one style to another...
Roger Sprung, Doc Watson, Pete Seeger, The Country Gentlemen & others managed to create new stuff from old stuff...

...it's the musical equivalent of recycling. I remember a version of Teddy Bear's Picnic in Rev Gary Davis style (Mike Nerenberg?) in the old McGill Union.

...so, yes, if you can recreate Tammy, Bravo!

Why not let Leslie Neilson do it? I know why he got that part. His father was with the R.C.M.P. - a "Mountie." I once had a high school teacher who baby sat for Debbie Reynolds when she was around 10 or 11. He said she was an insufferable brat, albeit very talented.

Sorry, but all it shows is that Art has occasionally played some pop music...and I might enjoy hearing him do so...but genrés do not morph so easily.

Back in 1960, I was Activities Director for a summer camp in the Sierras. Our younger staff members (14 - 16)were having serious "nocturnal issues" over this Debbie Reynolds song. Our Camp Director went on record as saying this was the most treacle he had ever heard concentrated in one piece of music. I just thought it was terminally bland.

Brilliant tune. This was recorded by fiddle player Mark O Connor as "Tammy's Waltz" on his first album and has been given the ultimate treatment by Ry Cooder on a recent CD which I have somewhere. Interesting how a good tune fits into somany different music catogories

I never did see the movie. YUK. It was about girls and love and kissing and stuff like that. I was nine. BUT, that song stayed with me from hearing it once. I thought then and think now that it's beautiful.

Well, the original "Tammy And the Bachelor," with Debbie Reynolds and Leslie Nielsen was saccharine and faux-hillbilly-accent enough -- though as a young teen, I loved it -- but the sequels with Sandra Dee as Tammy were treacly and insipid enough to make me puke even as a teen. (Dee could never lose her New Yoak accent enough to even begin to sound 'southern' and she was so incredibly sweet that diabetics had to avoid the movie.)

Blissfully I don't recall much about the film except that I thought "how cool to live on a house boat."

Beyond that it seemed it was all about some sticky sweet hillbilly girl trying to make a go in the big wide world. With my Appalachain roots (maternal side) I wanted to steer as clear as possible from the poor and poorly educated stigma attached to anyone who's family hailed from West by gawd Virginia. Both my Mom's parents were from WV and before anyone says anything NO they were not even remotely related. No extra digits in my family as far as I know.

So as a teenie and tweenie I really despised being called Tammy and Tammy Linn. Oddly enough, even though I still don't like the name I am quite interested in learning about my Appalachain roots especially regards the music. My Gammy (maternal grandmother) played piano and autoharp sang mostly gospel songs even wrote a few. What happened to her work I don't know. Sadly there is no one to tap for info. My Mom and her twin don't remember much.

The Graham Bond Organisation (G.B, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Dick Heckstall-Smith) released a version of this in 1965. It was probably a management/record company driven tilt at the charts as all bands needed a hit record in those days. Chris Welch's biography of Cream states both his and the band's opinions of this particular venture.

I have a relative named Tamara (Tammy) whose name was inspired by the Debbie Reynolds movie (and who used the song "Tammy" in lieu of the Wedding March when she came down the aisle). But FWIW, the Debbie Reynolds character in "Tammy" was not named Tamara.
Her name was Tambrey (last name Tyree).

I have a friend Tamara who was NOT named after Tammy, nor does she call herself Tammy. She was named after the beautiful Tamarack tree (I was there when they chose the name). So you have an escape route.

f stands for Felix. I was named after a cartoon cat, and have seen the letters to prove it.

When I was in a play about Australia in a big theater in Chicago a long time ago, there was an ab-original cast recording of it and we in the play got a great cast rate on it if we bought 3 or more.

The film, when I saw it as a 14 yr old, convinced me that US movie morality was predictable and the pits; no matter what the rest of the plot might have as possibilities, if a person of one sex saw someone of the opposite sex starkers, they had to be married to each other by the last frame. Put me off MGM for decades.

But I have let out the leather ferret and trotted the tune out as a waltz in sessions where people are (or need a bit of) reminiscing. It's amazing how many people still know the words. In Oz!

And, while we're on folklore, I was once told that the tune was, at least partially, based on a Cajun tune. I don't have much experience in Cajun music, but I'm in the right place to ask.

Ugghhh! I was named for that character in the film and the song was sung regularly at me, when I was little. Thanking my Dad that my birth certificate says Tamara Linn and not Tammy Linn as my Mom would have had it and as I was called all my growing up years.

Tammy Linn died in my 30's. I killed her.

I remember seeing that film in the early sixties. It must have been before I was eight. It made me cringe then and I suspect that even at that tender age I reacted similarly to Uncle Dave O. Strange to think that the same Debbie Reynolds could be so vivacious and funny in "Singing in the Rain".

And I was going to name any daughters I had Debbie or Tammy (but I didn't because I grew up first).

Saw this on the "big screen" as a kid. The film is about planting tomatoes. Fresh, luscious, glorius, pink-skinned, globuals bursting with lusty liquid that can only be secured through cultivation, planting and long term nourishing. (I lusted for those buxem spheres then ... and still do.)

Mom - (she also had buxem spheres which would slap-slap-slap in the early morning workouts) would occasionally ship us out on a Saturday morning (until a kid was castrated in the theatre) with 50cents. I would return with 10cents for the piggybank...(and sometimes 15cents - if the extra ten was loaned out with promise of immediate return for the purchaser's immediate purchase - ahhh...the returns of delayed gratification satisfying pentup desire) Movie was 25cents, "Flicks Chocolate in a Tube" was 15cents and 10cents went towards investments.

The lyrics posted above on July 18, 1999, 10:38 are not the ones emblazoned in my brain:

Old hooty owl...IN an old hooty tree.

I liked the song then - today - insipid (but I liked Burl Ives then too...and still do)

When I was seven or eight years old I thought this song and "The Ballad of the Green Berets" were wonderful. I learned and sang them both with great feeling, usually one after the other. :)

The entire movie is available on You Tube in twelve 10 minute segments. The sound is good but the video quality is not.

Also available on You Tube is the scene where Debbie Reynolds sings the song as a separate video and both, the sound and viseo quality are superb on that one.
