'Prairie Home Companion' host Garrison Keillor suffered stroke, recovering in Rochester
Pioneer Press

Updated: 09/09/2009 01:29:04 PM CDT

Author, humorist and radio personality Garrison Keillor suffered a minor stroke on Sunday morning and is currently being treated at Saint Marys Hospital at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Mayo spokesman Karl Oestreich said in a statement released today that Keillor was admitted to Saint Marys on Sunday night.

"He is up and moving around, speaking sensibly, working at a laptop, and it's expected he'll be released on Friday," said Oestreich.

Prairie Home Productions managing director Kate Gustafson Sanderson told staff today about Keillor's health and said they think he's going to be fine.

Keillor underwent open-heart surgery at Mayo Clinic in 2001.

This morning, Keillor's Facebook status read: Garrison Keillor is enjoying a sunny day at an undisclosed location in Southern Minnesota."

Just last Friday, Keillor, 67, delivered a live broadcast of "A Prairie Home Companion" from the State Fair Grandstand to a crowd of more than 7,000. A Pioneer Press review of the show described him as being "delighted to be at the Fair" and "gleefully leading sing-alongs."

Keillor's 19th book, "Pilgrims," is scheduled for release on Sept. 22. — Amy Carlson Gustafson and Mary Ann Grossmann

MSNBC says it was a minor stroke, he'll be released on Friday and return to normal activity next week, which will include the new(26th)
season of A Prairie Home Companion. I hope he recovers completely and stays with us for many years. The man is a national treasure.

I second that, Neil. HE stands out among a million media voices as an icon of humane humor, compassion and an example of being human despite all temptations to do otherwise. Reminds me of Kendall.

Just in case you wanted to know:

September 12, 2009

This week on A Prairie Home Companion, a Western combo featuring one show from Missoula, Montana and another from Pullman, Washington with yodeling cowboy Wylie Gustafson, rancher/songstress Stephanie Davis, and the old-time acoustic duo Growling Old Men. Plus, Idaho grown singer-songwriter Charlie Sutton, a tribute to the mighty Lentil, and the story of a young novelist who leaves the big city for an abandoned boxcar on the shores of the Palouse River. In Lake Wobegon, the rift between Clint and Clarence Bunsen grows and the Petersen car is submerged in the lake.

I have enjoyed PHC for a long time. I hate to see him in bad health. Saw him a few years ago from a box seat at the Hollywood Bowl. It was a great program with Meryl Streep singing along with many others. It was a great time.

Here is Garrison Keiller's reassuring message from hospital:

"I am in the hands of smart and compassionate people and plan to get out on Friday and get right back to work" And ""Engage all of the medical staff in long conversations about predestination, and they'll have you out of there in no time at all!"

He does have the knack of saying just the right thing.

Whoops!

What I was going to say was I agree with McGrath. I remember some years ago, on a visit to Ullapool, he was reported as saying that he heard the sound of the pipes, and commented..."There's something about the sound that gets into your blood, re-arranges your DNA, and makes you want to be Scottish!"...
Well with a name like that who could blame him?
