Will Scarlett just called me to give me the sad news that the great guitarist Steve Mann has died. He passed 2 nights ago, on Sept. 8. I don't have any more information.

Stefan Wirz has a wonderful page about Steve Mann:

http://wirz.de/music/mann_frm.htm

I didn't meet him until the mid-1970s, by which time he was irrevocably messed up from drugs (I think mostly speed), but I had heard of him, and had heard his incredible recordings from the 60s. A great, great player in his day.

I am truly sorry to hear this sad news. Steve was a good friend back in Ash Grove days, despite his serious drug problems.

I remember Steve Mann from the Troubador days when he was befriended by the Mama's and the Papa's. He was a brilliant finger-style guitarist.

Steve was a casualty of the acid generation from which he didn't recover.

It was really hard for many of those musicians in that time because acid was so rampant and not many could really handle it.

It's a sad loss because Steve was a nice guy and a great guitarist.

Frank

here is his web site.
www.stevemanngtr.com

here is a you tube clip..
one of the comments mentioned that he
"was a victim of the Army/CIA LSD experiments
taking place in and around San Francisco and
Berkley at the time in the early sixties..
that's the real story.."

Not sure who/where that comment came from, but I knew Steve well in the 60s, and he wasn't a victim of anything. He took drugs willingly and freely and as often as he could get his hands on them. And they destroyed his health, his talent and his mind. Yet somehow he could always play so beautifully; even in the depths of the darkness the music never left him.
