Subject: Lyr.rqd I just cant wait to collect my c
From: GUEST,OldNic Kilby

Vic ,who we sing with is retiring next week and we thought that it would be good to have a song for him. I did think if a parody on "Its not for me the sun brings the morning" but I did not want to get castrated as anyone messing with "his song"does annoy him
This leaves a few Retirement songs , one of which has the chorus of
    "I just cant wait to collect me cards
    I just cant wait to go"
HELP
Where do I find the words please,its usually me that provides the source of a song.Not this one though.

Nick,
It was written by Ian Campbell so searching his songs might bring a result.
It has also been recorded by Roy Bailey.
Good Luck

Hi folks,

I was trying to check the lyrics of this song, which i have been singing on and off for over 30 years since I first heard Roy Bailey do it, and came across this thread. Here is my recollection of the lyrics, though I long ago lost the record from which I learnt it - I think this is right:

======

I took this job when I left school 'cause I thought it might be fun,
I signed the papers binding me, till I was twenty-one

Chorus:
And I just can't wait to collect my cards, I just can't wait to go,
I can't get along with the people here and my work it bores me so!

Well I think I'll wait 'till the wedding's over before I say goodbye,
For the girl-friend tells me we must save if a house we want to buy.
Chorus

Now I'll have wait till the baby's born before I can be free,
For the mortgage rates keep rising and I need security.
Chorus

Well I think I'll wait till the kids leave school before I break away,
For growing kids eat money and I need the steady pay.
Chorus

Now I think I'll wait till the house is mine before I say goodbye
For the interest rates keep rising and the car it bleeds me dry.
Chorus

Now I think I'll wait till retirement age, before I make the break;
Well the pension scheme insures the wife and it's mainly for her sake.
Chorus

Well thank you for the gold watch sir, the silver collection too -
But are you sure I have to go, for I won't know what to do.

And I just can't bear to collect my cards, I just can't bear to go;
And I shall miss the people here, and my life it bores me so.

=====

One of those songs that is both amusing and very sad at the same time.

cheers

Stefan

Hi

Just on the point of posting off the words when I see that they have been posted above.

Ian Campell did write it but if I can remember correctly it is called The Apprentice Song.

I heard it done by Harvey Andrews and to my mind that is the best version I have heard.

I used to do that version when I sang it.

Many years ago I met a great guitarist called Al Lawrence - anyone remember Al ?? He played several times at our clubs and I sang this song at one of them. I gave Al he words but I never herd him sing it. Mind you he was mainly an instrumentalist and I remember he did a great solo on guitar of The Entertainer.

cheers

John

Did you mean Al Lawrence, married to Jane, father of Kirsty and Katie?
If so, he lives at Kirk Michael in the Isle of Man and on most Fridays can be found at the folk music session at the Tynwald Inn, St Johns.
Still a fine guitarist but I've never heard him sing this song either.

hi bigJ

Yes that sounds like Al.

I knew that he hailed from the IOM but when I knew him he was playing around the Manchester and Greater Manchester area, specifically in Altrincham and Sale most of the time that I knew him.

If you see him please give him my regards...Mike from Linotype Folk Club.

This is a great site and only goes to illustrate what a small World we really do live in.

Many thanks for for time and efforts.

cheers

John
