Subject: Most Scary 'Love' Song Lyric From: alex s Date: 13 Sep 09 - 02:54 PM After finding the "Most Moving" thread so interesting, I wondered what the scariest/most chilling lyric in a song about love might be. Let's kick off with Paul McCartney's [FOR NO ONE] "...and in her eyes, you see nothing, no sign of love behind the tears...."

Subject: RE: Most Scary 'Love' Song Lyric From: alanabit Date: 13 Sep 09 - 03:46 PM Tim Hardin's "IF I WERE A CARPENTER" has always struck me as a song about fear and insecurity rather than just love. Most of the song consists of rhetorical questions and longing rather than any real fulfillment or joy. It's still a brilliant song for all that. I only really understood it when I heard it sung by the late John Pearse. |

Ev'ry breath you take,
Ev'ry single day,
Oh, can't you see
Ev'ry move you make,
Since you've gone I been lost without a trace.
Oh, can't you see
Ev'ry move you make.
Ev'ry move you make,
I'll be watching you... |
Subject: Lyr Add: IN THE SANITORIUM + BILLIE & MILLIE From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 13 Sep 09 - 06:11 PM I've always liked IN THE SANITORIUM by Momus, plus it turned me onto Gide: "In the sanatorium I've booked a private room Where you can feel at home Where we can be alone Just you, the nurse and me In mountain scenery All the time that you've been ill Your face has looked so pale Drained by the force of will Drained by the wait until My treatment makes you well Or weaker still Half in love with easeful death I cloud the mirror with your breath Half in love with this disease That keeps you close to me Your eyes grow heavy as I read 'The Immoralist' by André Gide Fall asleep my sickly darling Rest in peace Men you used to know declare Their most sincere desire To travel here and share The treatment you require Their letters saying they care Are on the fire As I interrupt the muslin Hanging round the bed I wake you with the rustling And you raise your head And ask again, your voice uncertain If you're not a burden Half in love with easeful death I cloud the mirror with your breath Half in love with this disease That keeps you close to me Your eyes grow heavy as I read 'The Immoralist' by André Gide Fall asleep my sickly darling Rest in peace I wonder, as I watch you sleep If this possessive streak Will make me force my love Or if the trick is cheap And if you took your drug And if you're deep enough asleep In the sanatorium I've booked a private room Where you can feel at home Where we can be alone Just you, the nurse and me In mountain scenery" *** As a child, I found Alice Cooper's BILLIE & MILLIE quite scary! Though I don't think it has quite the same impact now :-) Billie I wonder why are we insane Will we ever get better Will we stay the same Billie I'm worried Millie don't worry No one knows our pain Being in love is crazy not alone that way I know you're worried today God made love crazy so we wouldn't feel alone He was thinking of us he was thinking of us God made love crazy so we wouldn't feel so alone Billie my mind seems to wander To events of a night long ago Driving alone with our guilt well concealed In the trunk of your '68 Olds Millie our world's an asylum And our minds like you say ain't that straight But you know and I know our passion's Not deformed it's true I'd say We'll love our lifetime God made love crazy so we wouldn't feel alone He was thinking of us he was thinking of us God made love crazy so we wouldn't feel so alone Billie I dream of our children They're frightening and gruesome and sad And I don't want them growing inside me They're no price for the love that we have Oh Millie oh Billie criminally insane Oh Millie oh Billie Oh Billie it's fresh in my memory The night that it had to be done You with your pick axe and scissors And you with your shovel and gun And I liked your late husband Donald But such torture his memory brings All sliced up and sealed tight in baggies Guess love makes you do funny things Oh Millie oh Billie criminally insane Oh Millie oh Billie |

Subject: RE: Most Scary 'Love' Song Lyric From: Thompson Date: 16 Sep 09 - 06:38 PM A song banned in the Depression because it was so often found with the needle of the phonograph spinning over and over around the centre of the 78, in apartments and houses and in the sound booths that were the jukeboxes of the time, during an era where suicide had an almost sexual attraction (police patrolled in pairs who were forbidden from separating after a pair saw a group of people joining hands on a bridge to leap off together to death, and one cop said "I'll go and talk to them" - his horrified partner saw him join hands with the last in the chain and jump with them): Gloomy Sunday. Subject: RE: Most Scary 'Love' Song Lyric From: Mr Fox Date: 17 Sep 09 - 12:50 PM Richard Thompson is a specialist: "COLD KISSES" Here I am in your room going through your stuff Said you'd be gone five minutes, that's time enough Here in your drawer there's lacy things Old credit cards and beads and bangles and rings Well I think I've found what I'm looking for Hidden away at the back of the drawer Here's the life that you led before.... The war/love/ghost story that is "WOODS OF DARNEY" Now we lie in the darkness together Often we lie without speaking this way As you stare in the dark do you see your young corporal Who never came back from the woods of Darney Is it him that you see when we make love together? Is it him that you see when war fills the sky? Was he there as you stood in your grandmother's wedding dress As we made our own vows, you and I?.... And, most of all, "LOVE IN A FAITHLESS COUNTRY" Learn the way to melt into a crowd Never catch an eye or dress too loud You've got to be invisible my friend To find the joy on which we must depend That's the way we make love.... A song inspired by the Moors murders: therefore the 'joy on which we must depend' is serial murder. The serial murder of children. |

Subject: Lyr Add: DANCING ON THE EDGE (The Hooters) From: alanabit Date: 19 Sep 09 - 05:31 AM The Hooters "Dancing on the Edge" is one of the most exhilarating, but also saddest songs I know, because although the character singing is obviously totally overcome, you know it is going to end quickly and he is going to fall hard. The Hooters – DANCING ON THE EDGE I'm dancing out on the edge I'm dancing out on the edge Out on the edge She slides like a shadow and she fits anywhere She falls like an angel down where there are no saints at all There are no saints at all I can't touch her I can't reach her You lose your way forever when you gaze into her eyes and I'm dancing out on the edge... She's wild like the roses No place for any man to rest in her garden Red lips that kiss and tell you yes They kiss and tell you yes I can't touch her I can't reach her You lose your way forever every time you trip inside and I'm dancing out on the edge... Then I touch her and I reach her We lose ourselves forever We drown in one another's eyes and we're dancing out on the edge... Out on the edge... [lyrics written by Hyman, Bazilian, Bettis] Ian Curtis's "Love Will Tear Us Apart Again" has a similar effect and there is now a brilliant version by The Oyster Band: Love Will Tear Us Apart Again by The Oyster Band |

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE (J Davis/C Mitchell) From: GUEST,Dani Date: 19 Sep 09 - 11:14 AM The other night dear, as I lay sleeping I dreamed I held you in my arms But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken So I hung my head and I cried. You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are gray You'll never know dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away I'll always love you and make you happy, If you will only say the same. But if you leave me and love another, You'll regret it all some day: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are gray You'll never know dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away You told me once, dear, you really loved me And no one else could come between. But not you've left me and love another; You have shattered all of my dreams: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are gray You'll never know dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me When I awake my poor heart pains. So when you come back and make me happy I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame. You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are gray You'll never know dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away |

Subject: Lyr Add: WHERE THE WILD ROSES GROW (Nick Cave) From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 19 Sep 09 - 11:30 AM Oooh I'm forgetting Nike Caves fabulous Where the Wild Roses Grow Though it's actually pretty hysterical in a black humour way. I'd love to sing this in a duet. CHORUS: They call me The Wild Rose But my name was Elisa Day Why they call me it I do not know For my name was Elisa Day From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one She stared in my eyes and smiled For her lips were the colour of the roses That grew down the river, all bloody and wild When he knocked on my door and entered the room My trembling subsided in his sure embrace He would be my first man, and with a careful hand He wiped at the tears that ran down my face [Chorus] On the second day I brought her a flower She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen I said, "Do you know where the wild roses grow So sweet and scarlet and free?" On the second day he came with a single red rose Said: "Will you give me your loss and your sorrow" I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed He said, "If I show you the roses, will you follow?" [Chorus] On the third day he took me to the river He showed me the roses and we kissed And the last thing I heard was a muttered word As he knelt (stood smiling) above me with a rock in his fist On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief And I kissed her goodbye, said, "All beauty must die" And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth [Chorus] |
Subject: RE: Most Scary 'Love' Song Lyric From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 19 Sep 09 - 11:44 AM The most genuinely chilling 'love song' so to speak, I've ever heard is Bartoks Bluebeards Castle Love this opera. It presses all those dark psychological fairytale nightmare buttons. Through the sixth door in Bluebeards castle, Judith finds a lake. And says: "I can see a sheet of water, white and tranquil sleeping water. What is this mysterious water? Bluebeard replies: "Tears, Judith! Tears!" |

And: She got tired of picking daisies And cooking my meals for me... I think I'd rather be a cowboy, I think I'd rather ride the range, I think I'd rather be a cowboy Than lay me down in love and lady's chains. Huh? Because the woman wasn't satisfied with being a full-time catering service for only one man, SHE is putting HIM in chains? Subject: Lyr Add: JIM + MY MAN (Billie Holiday) From: sing4peace Date: 20 Sep 09 - 09:24 PM These two sung by Billie Holiday were pretty disturbing - JIM by Shawn, Petrillo, Ross and Samuels Jim doesn't ever bring me pretty flowers Jim doesn't try to cheer my lonely hours Don't know why I'm so crazy for Jim. Jim never tells me I'm his heart's desire I never seem to set his love afire Gone are the years I've wasted on him. Sometimes when I get feelin' low I saw let's call it quits Then I hang on and let him go breaking my heart in bits Someday I know that Jim will up and leave me But even if he does you can believe me I'll go on carrying the torch for Jim. ----- MY MAN - Pollac,Yvain,Willemetz,Charles It cost me a lot But there's on thing that I've got It's my man It's my man Cold or wet Tired, you bet All of this I'll soon forget With my man. He's not much on looks He's no hero out of books But I love him Yes, I love him. Two or three girls has he That he likes as well as me But I love him. I don't know why I should He isn't true He beats me too What can I do? Oh, my man, I love him so He'll never know All my life is just despair But I don't care When he takes me in his arms The world is bright All right. What's the difference if I say I'll go away When I know I'll come back on my knees someday? For whatever my man is I'm his forevermore. ------ Yikes! |

Subject: Lyr Add: TRUE BLUE LOU (Robin/Coslow/Whiting) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Jun 18 - 03:44 PM Joe F mentioned this on 16-Sep-2009: Here's my transcription from the recording at The Internet Archive: TRUE BLUE LOU Words by Leo Robin & Sam Coslow; music by Richard A. Whiting, 1929. From the film "Dance of Life" (1929) As recorded by Johnny Marvin, 1929. Down in a pool room some of the gang were talking of gals they knew. "Women are all the same," said Joe. One dizzy bird said: "Pal, ain't you heard the story of True Blue Lou? Listen and get an earful, beau:" She was a dame in love with a guy. She stuck to him but didn't know why. Ev'ryone blamed her Still they all named her True Blue Lou. He gave her nothing; she gave him all, But when he had his back to the wall, Who fought to save him, Smiled and forgave him? True Blue Lou. He got a break and went away to get a new start, But, poor kid, she never got a break except the one way down in her heart. Maybe somewhere in heaven above, There's a reward for that kind of love. Angels won't blame her. They too will name her True Blue Lou. |
Subject: Lyr Add: COLD KISSES (Richard Thompson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Jun 18 - 05:50 PM Mr Fox quoted part of this song on 17-Sep-2009: COLD KISSES As recorded by Richard Thompson on "You? Me? Us?" (1996) Here I am in your room going through your stuff. Said you'd be gone five minutes; that's time enough. Here in your drawer, there's lacy things, Old credit cards and beads, bangles and rings. But I think I've found what I'm looking for Hidden away at the back of the drawer. Here's the life that you led before. Old photographs of the life you led, Arm in arm with Mr X, Y and Z[ed], Old boyfriends big and small. Got to see how I measure up to them all. There is a place we all must start, love. Who were you holding in that fond embrace? I've found a door into your heart, love, And do you still feel the warmth of cold kisses? Here I am behind enemy lines, Lookin' for secrets, lookin' for signs: Old boyfriends, big and small, Got to see how I measure up to them all. This one's handsome, not too bright. This one's clever with his hands all right, Tougher than me if it came to a fight. And this one's a poet, a bit of a wet, Bit of a gypsy, a bit of a threat. I wonder if she's got over him yet. Old passions frozen in the second. Who were you holdin' in that fond embrace? Hearts have a past that must be reckoned. And do you still feel the warmth of cold kisses? Time to put the past away. That's your footstep in the street, I'd say. Tie the ribbon back around it— Everything just the way I found it; And I can hear you turn the key, And my head's buried when you see me In a Margaret Miller mystery; And do you still feel the warmth of cold kisses? Do you still feel the warmth of cold kisses? |

Subject: Lyr Add: WOODS OF DARNEY (Richard Thompson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Jun 18 - 06:17 PM Mr Fox quoted part of this song on 17-Sep-2009: WOODS OF DARNEY As recorded by Richard Thompson on "You? Me? Us?" (1996) I found your picture in a corporal's pocket. His cold fingers still pressed it to his chest. Sniper's bullet took his eyes and his breath away. Now he lies out in the forest with the rest. You look shy in your grandmother's weddin' dress, Feet set wide like a farm girl stands, Too young to love and too young to lose In a cracked picture frame in a dead man's hands. I kept it with me for the luck, for the magic. Maybe fate wouldn't strike in the same place twice; But something stirred and I dared to dream of you, And I knew I'd look for you if I should survive. When we stood down at last, it was easy to find you, And mine was the shoulder you cried on that day— Just an old comrade doin' his duty, Bringin' the news from the woods of Darney. When I showed you the picture, perhaps I felt jealousy As your tears welled up with each reminisce, And my hands may be rougher and my tongue may be coarser, But I knew I could give you a love good as his. Now we lie in the darkness together. Often we lie without speaking this way. As you stare in the dark, do you see your young corporal Who never came back from the woods of Darney? Is it him that you see when we make love together? Is it him that you see when war fills the sky? Was he there as you stood in your grandmother's wedding dress, As we made our own vows, you and I? Now the bugle calls; they say this is the big one. A curse on the life of a soldier, you say, But don't you know that's a soldier's small comfort For the bugle to sound, and to hear and obey? And I'll carry your picture, the one that he carried. I'll wear your innocence and take my chance On a frozen field, in a far-flung war, To win back what we lost in a field in France. And it's many a soldier who goes into battle. Your corporal and I, we just hear and obey. Perhaps we'll lie in the darkness together With your love to bind us, in the woods of Darney. |

Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE IN A FAITHLESS COUNTRY (R Thompson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Jun 18 - 09:01 PM Another song quoted by Mr Fox on 17-Sep-2009: LOVE IN A FAITHLESS COUNTRY As recorded by Richard Thompson on "Across a Crowded Room" (1985) Always move in pairs and travel light. A loose friend is an enemy; keep it tight. Always leave a job the way you found it. Look for trouble comin' and move around it. That's the way we make love. That's the way we make love. That's the way we make love. Always make your best moves late at night. Always keep your tools well out o' sight. It never pays to work the same town twice. It never hurts to be a little nice. That's the way we make love. That's the way we make love. That's the way we make love. Learn the way to melt into a crowd. Never catch an eye or dress too loud. You've got to be invisible, my friend, To find the joy on which we must depend. That's the way we make love. That's the way we make love. That's the way we make love. Love, love, love, love. As recorded by Glen Campbell, 1961. There is someone walking behind you. Turn around; look at me. There is someone watching your footsteps. Turn around; look at me. There is someone who really needs you. Here's my heart and my hand. Turn around, look at me, And understand, understand. That there is someone to stand beside you. Turn around; look at me. There is someone to love and guide you. Turn around; look at me. Oh, I've waited, but I'll wait forever For you to come to me. Look at someone who really loves you. Turn around; look at me. The Lettermen recorded their version in 1962; it was a much bigger hit than Campbell's. The Vogues released a version in 1968 which topped them both. |

My heart it bleeds For she loves him indeed. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. Here I stand empty heart, empty hand, While he has my true love and he has my land. Oh, my heart is sore For she loves me no more. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. No more she'll fly; no more she'll cry All over the cold earth beneath which I lie. My heart it grieves For my side she must leave. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. Let the cold wind blow; let the years come and go. I'll wait for my true love though she'll never know. I wish them no rest Like the heart in my breast. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. I wish them no rest Like the heart in my breast. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. Sing hi lo lay at the end of the day. |
