But I don't remember anything at the other end of Garratt Lane either. There was one, The Selkirk?, on a back street not far from Tooting Broadway, then The Grove at Balham. I agree that it's a real shame the club has gone - it was one of the relatively few that had a basically traditional base, in latter years the only one in South London I think. Good to hear the news on Dave's health seems to be looking up though - I hope it continues to stabilise and improve. Barbara |

Pat and I were two of the helpers/residents who joined Tom and Barbara and took the club over, along with Colin Meadows, Dave and Doreen... et al, when Common Roots went belly-up, first at the Courthouse, then to somewhere at the other end of Garrett Lane (The Stirling Castle)???? I honestly don't remember being at The Old Sargeant, which was our local - confirm this Tom! Remember wonderful nights with Gordeanna McCulloch and Sarah Grey; the last session we were at featured the magnificent Brendan McGlinchy and Oliver Mulligan. Good luck Dave and Doreen - good days! I too have had great times there as guest and as audience and am sorry to see it go. Maybe another venue will turn up and the phoenix will rise again. There's been talk about the possiblity of house concerts to counteract the closure of venues. This seems a reasonable idea although i know most people in this country dont have the same room available as most of our "Over the pond" friends. Mind you, If Sinsull can do it !!! regards, Moira |

The club came out of The Courthouse Community Centre's Common Roots club which BB and I started - London's first, and only, multicultural folk club - but that's a different story. When Common Roots finished (even I couldn't get my employers to carry on funding the idea - they were Maggie's flagship Council!) the committee for Court Sessions came together - the club first met at The Courthouse Community Centre - then Wandsworth Council turned that into a museum (some would say....) and the club moved to the Old Sergeant, thence to Tooting, Streatham, and so onwards. I should have pointed this out on my opening post that I was merely the message bearer. The posting at http://froots.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4677 gives good news about Dave East's health position, but we can all see from the posting that Dave & Doreen are going to have a lot on their minds for quite a while without sorting out new venues, booking guests etc. It would be good if some of the people who have enjoyed the benefits of the great work that has been done by Dave & Doreen in organising an excellent club in South London - for many years - could help them out, especially in the short to medium term. Dave and Doreen are not followers of Mudcat, as far as I know, but they have my very best wishes and I will email them to inform them of this thread, so that they know of my good wishes - and of the others that will undoubtedly follow this posting. Date: 14 Sep 09 - 08:47 AM I have a vague memory of seeing a pub in Tulse Hill, at the big junction with the South Circular, having a notice up about new rooms available - the vague bit is the word free. Only saw it yesterday - it had been up for some time, and ruled it out for the group that used to meet out on the Downs, and I had a headache at the time, so can't be sure. Penny |

They ran in a church hall/community centre for a while, and I can't remember what happened to that, but usually the problem with folk clubs and the venues they run in is they don't make enough money for the venue owner. I had to close Faldingworth Live at one point for the same reason of Health, Family and lack of volunteers, so I can understand the situation. Since then, I was asked to continue it, which I did, but only with great support that I get now. I have always been at Village Halls and it has been great. We have a bar, so that overcomes the drinking side. Although when we didn't have a bar, people brought their own. The great thing, is that the people that come along want to listen to the music and we don't get the yobbo's I think the folk world should support village halls and the community, not the pubs. Too many pubs are closing, but a village hall can serve the community for many reasons. Anyway, good luck for the future. Les Worrall |

Hello everyone Firstly- We are very sad to announce that we are having to close, temporarily we hope, Court Sessions traditional song and music club. The main reasons are health problems, which are making organisational activities difficult and, of course, the continued lack of a reliable and decent venue for the club. Tomorrow night at the Antelope will therefore be the final 'Session' for the near future. We have been running and organising Court Sessions as a weekly club for some eighteen years- some may remember that it was originally a monthly club, in the Courthouse Community Centre at 11 Garratt Lane- and overall for over twenty two years.. In the beginning, we were part of a committee of six or seven, who shared out the duties and responsibilities, but that shrank as some people moved away, and others lost interest or found the burdens of organising the club's activities too intrusive. Now though, and for the last nearly ten years, it has been down to just we two- any volunteers out there?? The closure rate of pubs in the UK has now topped forty per week; this shows no sign of slowing down and in fact, with the recession deepening and unemployment growing daily, it could top fifty this year [it was thirty-two at New Year]. We would be simply delighted, therefore, to find a Trade Union or Trade's Council hostelry, like the 'John Ruskin House' premises in S Croydon, with available room, and if anyone knows of such a premises, please let us know... We're going to keep this e-group open, with a view to keeping in touch, and not least because we mean to continue presenting concerts in available halls we can hire. |
