Subject: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: curmudgeon Date: 15 Sep 09 - 08:12 PM The Abbreviated shanty/forebitter/ballad session for September will happen on the 19th at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH from 3:30 to c.6:00PM. Due to confusion about having the regular session AND the Maritime Festival a week apart, the Press Room has planned a C & W Festival starting around 6:00PM. Therefore we will start as usual, and stop when the music starts upstairs. Be advised - latecomers may not get a chance to sing - Tom |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: GUEST,Timbrel Date: 15 Sep 09 - 09:16 PM Hello all, If you're planning to be in town for the chantey sing, I have one additional opportunity to offer. A brand new festival is starting up in Portsmouth, and it debuts on Saturday. The NH Fish and Lobster Festival is a celebration of 400 years of local fishing heritage and honors our active fishing industry on NH's Seacoast. Festival details are here: http://www.prescottpark.org/fish.cfm And an article in the Portsmouth Herald is here: http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20090913-ENTERTAIN-909139997 We have been hoping to feature artists from the upcoming Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival at the event. It offers a great chance to introduce the Folk Festival to a large and new audience - we expect over a thousand attendees, as it's a busy weekend of multiple events in Portsmouth, and this is the only venue for food, as well as fishing-related demonstrations, vessel tours, and exhibitors. We have some slots open for music between noon and 3:00 on Saturday. Would you like to perform, or know anyone who would? As a first-year festival, we have no budget to pay you in money, but we can pay you in appreciation, fresh local seafood, and beer at the volunteer fest following the event itself (which runs noon to 4:00). If you're interested, please contact me - Michelle Moon - at michellenmoon@gmail.com. Thanks - and happy singing! |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Sep 09 - 09:18 PM I hope to be there in time. Meanwhile seeing as folks may not have as much time to sing, if you want to sing a bit earlier & get warmed up come to the Fish Festival at Strawberry Banke between 1:00 & 3:00 Saturday they're looking for folks to sing & lead shanties. A friend, Michelle Moon, who I used to know from Mystic Seaport is trying to get some singers together & I asked her to drop in on this thread & to give a few details for those that'd be interested. She'll most likely be at the Press Room friday evening too. I'll get her all your names. It'd also be a nice way to support another local festival that has something to do with the aqua enviorment. Maybe with a bit of support they might be willing to change their dates next year (if there is a next year) to coinside with the Maritime festival (we support them, they support us). Barry |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Sep 09 - 09:22 PM Well there you go, someone's already piped in with the info while I was posting. Barry, who will do his best to be there for both |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Sep 09 - 09:27 PM Hi Michelle, I didn't realize it was you until after I posted & checked back. Welcome to mudcat & so nice to see you here & it'll be very nice to see you once again in a maritime musical setting, it's been way to long. Barry |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Sep 09 - 09:56 PM It looks as if I'll be at both the Fish & Lobster Festival (could never pass up a free bite of seafood, hell with the beer) & the saturday shanty sing too. I'll be at the Press Room for the friday evening session too, to try an' help Michelle talk up the F&L fest & to help her round up some singers for the festival. Hopefully you'll all want to jump in on this and lend a voice & a hand (Tom, just a hand from you at the moment will do just fine) A C&W festival in Portsmouth, where are the loyalties to the local culture (oops, I hope I didn't hurt Emery's feelings, he's a bit of a country boy heart)? And what's with the Press Room, a back seat to every flyby event that happens to pull in at the peir. That Rock CD Night, Halloween, St Pat's, C&W night, Christmas & New Years, next we'll be making room for the fornicators fertilizing the fields on All Saints Day, ok, I'm in on that one. I guess we're just fish chum for the swallows/shallows. Barry |

Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: curmudgeon Date: 17 Sep 09 - 02:35 PM BTW, the seafood "Fishtival" is at Prescott Park, NOT Strawbery Banke - Tom |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Micca Date: 17 Sep 09 - 05:14 PM Hey Tom, from the look of the Title of this thread you need to get your vowels moving!!!, Sorry I can't make this one but I MAY make next months with a Fair wind and a following sea!! |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: crism Date: 17 Sep 09 - 05:25 PM Apparently they are looking for singers as early as 12:30. I will take that slot, and if no pirates join me at 1 I’ll just stay there all day. (-: |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: curmudgeon Date: 17 Sep 09 - 05:31 PM Thanks, Chris. I know Barry's planning on being both places and maybe we can recruit some more tomorrow night. Still too many loose ends for me to make the Fishtival, this year - Tom |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: SINSULL Date: 17 Sep 09 - 05:48 PM I have been home missing work two days in a row. Something akin to the flu but not. Chest cold; low fever; tired tired tired; no appetite; nausea. General malaise. I will go to work tomorrow and recuperate over the weekend. I will be staying close to home. |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: GUEST Date: 17 Sep 09 - 10:16 PM It looks like we've got singers! How fantastic. What a great community, glad it's come through for us, even at the last minute. It wouldn't be the same without music. Look forward to seeing you there, Barry, and others! |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Barry Finn Date: 17 Sep 09 - 11:59 PM THat (above) must be you Michele, glab to be of help. I'll also be at the Friday evening session at both the F&L fest & the shanty sing. Prescott Park, is that different from Starwberry Banke? Aren't they really both at the same places, down by the riverfront where that old steel hulk/hull used to be, right near the little Starwberry (nautical?) museum. Where the hell is Portsmouth???? Barry |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Sep 09 - 10:59 AM Prescott Park and Strawbery Banke are separate properties -- but in the same general vicinity. You have to PAY to get into Strawbery Banke Museum. Linn |

Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Barry Finn Date: 20 Sep 09 - 06:49 PM Sorry I didn't make it to either events. We had a medical crisis arise just as I was heading out of town that I had to turn back for. All is well now, hope it was a great time, both events. How bout someone filling the rest of us in? Barry |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 20 Sep 09 - 06:59 PM Note to the starters of threads: spell ONE important word correctly so the thread can be found using the filter. I keep thinking this thread is going to be about SHINTY. |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Jeri Date: 20 Sep 09 - 07:19 PM Low number of attendees, but we had some fun. Mark (not 'B') sang Puff the Magic Dragon (lived by the SEA) and we had quite a few forebitters (and a couple of aftbiters). I would have done Fire Down Below, but Barbara (she asked for it) bailed and didn't come back in time. Nobody from Maine. |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: SINSULL Date: 21 Sep 09 - 08:27 AM Jacqui and I had a girls day out complete with yard sales, Harrison Ford and champagne. We needed it. You weren't invited Jeri - punishment for leaving that creepy little nun in my bathroom. See if you get your sweater back! |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Sep 09 - 08:40 AM Sorry -- I've been feeling a bit over-extended of late. Took the day "off" to put together this year's program for the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival and get it to the printer so we'd have them by Friday. Linn |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Sep 09 - 08:42 AM By the way, could someone please fix the title of this thread -- "Sept. Shanty Session @ Press Room (NH)" would be nice. (Tom is known for his typos -- ask me sometime about the J-card to his 1986 tape -- but he rather overdid it this time; sigh.) Linn (Thanks!) |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shnty Sessn @Prs Rm (NH) From: Jeri Date: 21 Sep 09 - 09:19 AM Mary, I left nothing in your bathroom. Well, nothing that couldn't crawl back out of the tub drain anytime it wanted to. |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shanty Session @ Press Room (NH) From: curmudgeon Date: 21 Sep 09 - 10:14 AM For Charley, we had a small but formidable collection of singers, Mark Ryer, Mark Keller, Chris Maden. Jeri. Peter Hale, Barbara, Marty Stock. I'm sorry I don't have the memory for song choices that Charley does, but I'm pleased that folks sang lots of songs that I could accompany on concertina. For the whiners, pedants and spoilsports, had you paid attention to the second word (capitalised no less) of the opening post, you should have had a clue as to why I wrote the title the way I did. And Sept. was spelled correctly - Tom |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shanty Session @ Press Room (NH) From: SINSULL Date: 21 Sep 09 - 10:25 AM LOL Got them all, Tom. |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shanty Session @ Press Room (NH) From: Mr Happy Date: 21 Sep 09 - 11:20 AM Dave Mck, The thread's about sea shinty, similar to water polo! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinty |
Subject: RE: Sept. Shanty Session @ Press Room (NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Sep 09 - 12:48 PM Tom- Thanks for posting the roll. We did make it safely over the border into British Columbia yesterday afternoon, somewhere within the town of Surry. There will be more detailed reports on my travel thread when I get a chance to meditate. Suffice to say that when we cruised past the Sasquatch Lodge yesterday I suspected it would not be the usual day. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
