Some of the keys on my Toshiba laptop notebook have
numbers or up/down symbols on the front (in small,
grreay letters) I am wondering how to activate these
frunctions.

There are "Alt" codes that i used to do on my desk-top
'puter using the number pad. They do not seem to work
with the numbers in the top row, but might work if i
could figure out how to use the keys with the numbers
on them.

or maybe i need these:

there must be a key like
alt, ctrl or Fn that i
can use to access the
other characters on
these keys?

Re keyboard pants...

"get a flexible keyboard, slice it in half, make a fancy sew-into-the-pants plan -- until he gets to the soldering part. In order for the keyboards to function, the circuits have to connect to something. Unfortunately for Hoeken, it wasn't possible to connect the circuits to the traces either by soldering or with conductive thread. So only one side of the keyboard -- the one that still connects to the USB -- works."

Sigh - so this technologically challenged idiot who couldn't plan his way out of a wet paper bag is given praise?

esp. want to use number characters on the mjkluio789 keys...how to?

any mudgeeks or mudnerds out there who can answer this? Thanks!!

i wonder what happens if i click fn and f11?

1234567890

ah ha

123

and pushing them both again sends it back to the original setting

jkl

yep that does it...

so now i can use "alt" codes to type foreign alphabet letters
i have to click on f11 again to get the screen to have the task
bars back..it also changes the size of the screen.

GUEST Urgergestut. I think you are spamming us with an wanted product from a hacked website ***... - you will soon be purged... :-)

And now... back at the ranch, Tonto, disguised as a glove...

I have recently acquired an IBM Thinkpad T23 (It's only a P3M chip, about 2001 vintage, but works fine as a Firefox browser, especially for here) - I have the same hassles with understanding how to get the function keys to respond, as well the keys that have faint blue symbols (as well as guessing what they do), and get the so called 'duplicated number pad keys' to work. I am using Linux (Fedora), and may well need some drivers...

Open Mike, you will notice in the FAQ that you are requested not to respond to trolls or Spam, because their messages will be deleted and make your responses look silly, and because responding tends to provoke trolls to do more trolling.

On the lower-left corner of your Toshiba laptop keyboard, you will see a key that is marked "Fn" in a powder-blue color. If you hold down that key and press the various function keys, it will perform the function that is printed in blue on each of those function keys and on the spacebar.

Hope that helps.

-Joe-

The Fn key is used to access functions (Fn, gedditt?!) found in the same colour on other keys.

You may need to use Fn + Alt, or Fn + Ctrl to access other functions... Ctrl + Home on a standard keyboard will require Fn + Ctrl + Home, for example.

As a last resort, one can flip the laptop upside down, find the nameplate, and learn the maker, model, and even such esoteric things as the serial number.

In nearly all cases one may then go to the maker's website and download an "operators manual" which, usually will tell you all kinds of itty bitty "secrets" about your own laptop - if you RTFM even casually.

Toshiba is helpful in providing a Fn key with the marking in the same color as the secondary functions on the keys, and on some models provides a "Toshiba Help" default icon on the desktop. Not all makers are so considerate, and for them, and even for Toshiba, a once-over-lightly look at the instruction book(let) may be helpful.

John
