No mention Holst's "The Planets"?

Then there's "EXP/Up From the Skies" by Jimi Hendrix.

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy: I Took a Trip on a Gemini Spacecraft, which was covered by D. Bowie on the amazing Heathen album in 2002... Needless to say the LSC was the inspiration for Ziggy...

From: Rob Naylor

As well as Astronomie Domine Pink Floyd also did Interstellar Overdrive.

Then there's Queen's "39":

In the year of '39 assembled here the Volunteers
In the days when lands were few
The ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen

And as night followed day
So the storytellers day
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew

In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue
The Volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh

For the earth is old and grey, little darling we'll away
But my love this cannot be
For so many years have gone, though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes, from your eyes cry to me

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand
For my life still ahead, pity me

This is in response to GUEST,Psoup94 Dated 22 Nov 11 - 06:12 PM

"Back in the 60's there was a song about a flying saucer and its occupant - a little green man. It has a Mexican flavor in the lyrics. I have tried over 40 years to locate its title."

I'm going to make your day! I'm 42, and used to listen to this 45RPM record from my mom's collection when I was a kid, and one day something jogged my memory about the song, and I went on a mission to find it. Even with all the resources of the Internet, it took me 9 months to find:

Little Green Man

Seeing this thread has been resuscitated, How about the 'Red Dwarf' signature tune: "It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere".

No one mentioned the flying saucer song which I only remember bits of
"Two little men in a flying saucer
Came down to earth one day
Looked to left & right of it
Couldn't stand the sight of it
So quickly flew away"
Used to sing this to my sons. Is there any more??

I remember that song... don't know artist or title.

It's sort of amazing that the original question posting is the only reference on the internet (found in a search) relating to this song.

Really shows the limitation of knowledge on the internet for things prior to the mid 1990's!

No-one seems to have mentioned Heinlein's Cool Green Hills of Earth. It never appeared as an entire song, but there were several verses and part-verses. It COULD go to the tune of The Holy Ground, though preferably without the shouted bit.

The Moody Blues did a whole album with mostly space related songs, To Our Children's Children's Children (1969)

From the opening, "Higher and Higher":

Blasting, billowing, bursting forth
With the power of ten billion butterfly sneezes
Man, with his flaming pyre
Has conquered the wayward breezes

Climbing to tranquility/ Far above the cloud
Conceiving the heavens/ Clear of misty shroud

And "Floating"

Bouncing about on the moon
Guess you'll all be up here soon
The candy stores they'll be brand new
And you'll buy a rock
With "The Moon" right through

And "Sun Is Still Shining"

Everything's turning/ Turning around
See with your mind/ Leave your body behind
Now that we're out here/ Open your heart
To the universe/ Of which we're a part

Billy Bragg wrote "The Space Race is Over" -

When I was young I told my mum
I'm going to walk on the Moon someday
Armstrong and Aldrin spoke to me
From Houston and Cape Kennedy
And I watched the Eagle landing
On a night when the Moon was full
And as it tugged at the tides, I knew deep inside
I too could feel its pull

Some of the old links have broken over the years. Here are a couple of replacements:

Charley Noble (02 May 03 - 11:35 AM ) mentioned and ClaireBear (19 Sep 09 - 01:50 AM) linked to "Come Take a Trip in My Air Ship" in the Levy collection. Find it here.

GUEST,Jim (02 May 03 - 03:54 AM) mentioned "Rishathra, or, Prime Directive Shmime Directive" by Ookla the Mok. For what it's worth, it's the last song in their Supersecret album, and you can get lyrics (pdf) by clicking the album cover (red background, blue/yellow shield marked "Shh") on this page.

Five minutes before Guest Jim, Susanl posted a link to her own http://susanlatimer.com/clouds.htm but her website's all gone now, taken over by Japanese-language commercial-looking content. I wonder what she'd linked to, 11 1/2 years ago?
