I remember Hank Penny for his humor as well as his music and wish he had had a greater presence back east. The lack of acclaim is not because of a lack of talent or showmanship. Possibly never having the signature recording or not working out of Nashville helped hide his talent from the world at large. He was an important figure in the music world.

He did not receive the acclaim that other Western Swing pioneers such as Milton Brown, Bob Wills, Tex Williams and Authur "Guitar Boogie" Smith, but he was in the middle of the movement from 1938 on.

Always had a good entertaining band that the people could dance to.

Some associated players were Merl Travis, Speedy West, Joaquin Murphy, Roy Clark , Billy Strange and Noel Boggs.

He was married, at one time, to Sue Thompson, and backed Pop singers Doris Day and Jaye P. Morgan.

Very clear singing and an ever-present sense of humor.
