John Murphy of Hampton New Brunswick died suddenly on Tuesday. He was a dear friend not only to me but to all who knew him. A genuinely good man. He was 66. Born in England, he and his dear wife, Pip, moved to Canada in 1974.
He was one member of the NB music group Hal 'n Tow. This is such a shock.

I missed this the first time - what terrible news. John was a true gentleman - always good company and a gracious host. I have warm memories of August evenings at his beautiful house in St. John, circled around outside with singers and fiddles and humor.

I only knew John in the past 10 years or so, but I liked him very much, and considered him a friend. I'm incredibly sad to hear of his sudden and untimely death, and my heart goes out to Pip, and to all the folks who knew him so much better.

This makes me very very sad.

Dan

It was not in the Moncton paper... ya think someone would have called me! It was in the SJ paper...

MURPHY, JOHN DOUGLAS JAMES - The death of John Murphy of Hampton, husband of Pip Murphy, occurred unexpectedly September 15, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born in London, England, son of the late Con and Kath (Gibbons) Murphy. John was dearly loved by his family and friends. He was a gifted and respected teacher, artist, musician, actor, designer and human rights advocate. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church, Hampton on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 10:00 am. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place in Hampton Rural Cemetery at a later date. Memorials to Amnesty International, John Peters Humphrey Foundation, Piggs Peak Partnership or Doctors Without Boarders would be appreciated by the family. Because of the wonderful work John did for his community, for his art and music and for humanity my wife once told him it was an honour to know him. Instead of blushing or saying thank you like anyone else would do, he just stood there baffled. He had no idea what she was talking about. What a guy.

I wrote him this song the other day. (Please keep in mind that lyrics without music suck)

One Season and Tonight (for John Murphy)

This season in passing
It blew by my door
It turned the world round
It turned the world o'er
We have one season to make the world right
We have one season and we have tonight

If I'd never met you
The world would be wrong
I'd live some other place now
Singing some other song
And if you'd come last Sunday we'd have sung halleloo
With Bill on the bottom and me singing with you

But before you can leave here
Before we let you go
You must sing every song
Every song that you know
And you know a million so John it's alright
Cuz we have one season and we have tonight
We just have one season but we have tonight

I'll find you wherever you're hid, John

Steve,

Thank you very much for posting your song for John here. You always manage to write the tender heart of the matter without gushing. I hope to hear it sung when you're here in Maine with musical friends; you are one of the finest song makers on the East Coast...and beyond.

I wish I could be there with you all tomorrow. Quite a few of us will have to be there in spirit only.

Thinking of John's family and so many friends today. I hope his memorial gathering was full of memories, comfort, and burdens shared.

I only knew John for the last decade when we worked on his Credo and other human rights project. I stayed with him and Pip on occasion. This is a great loss to his family and the community (a far broader one than Hampton). I do know that he would have laughed out loud and then said something acerbic if he could have read the notice above "Memorials to Amnesty International, John Peters Humphrey Foundation, Piggs Peak Partnership or Doctors Without Boarders would be appreciated by the family." Boarders? The medical profession must be undergoing hard times if they cannot find lodgers!

RIP. A great and dedicated man.
