Lyr. Add: The Demon of the Sea
Anon. c. 1840-1850

1
Unfurl the sails we've easy gales,
And helmsman steer aright,
Hoist grim death's head, the pirate said,
A vessel heaves in sight---
Run out your guns, with haste bear down,
From us she must not slip,
Come cheer, lads, cheer. we know no fear,
On board the Demon ship.

Chorus:
Hurrah for the life of war and strife,
A Pirate's life for me,
My bark shall ride the foaming tide,
The Demon of the sea.

2
Vast ships of fame with courage came,
And proudly rode the sea,
To take me tried, I all defied,
For none can injure me,
France sent out a vessel stout,
To capture me was sure,
I sunk her soon and she went down
In sight of Galia's shore.
3
Two ships of war came from afar,-
From Edward, England's King,
To fetch, he said, alive or dead-
The pirate captive bring.
His pride I shook, both ships I took
And sunk them in the waves,
Six hundred and ten of Edward's men,
In the ocean found their graves.
4
And you(r) ship too I'll make her rue
My bark she ever saw,
By her cut I see she proves to be,
An English man of war;
Pour a whole broadside the pirate cried,
Give her a pirate's fare,
Fire red hot balls, destroy them all
And blow them in the air.
5
With equal rage both ships engage,
And dreadful slaughter is seen,
The die is cast, a ball at last,
Has struck her magazine,
And now apall'd his men they all
Stand mute in deep despair,
The pirate too, and all his crew,
Were blown up in the air.

Chorus 2
No more he'll ride the foaming tide,
No more a dread he'll be,
The pirate's dead in the ocean's bed,
Is the Demon of the sea.

Ordoyno, Nottingham, songsheet c. 1840-1850; Firth c.13(250), Bodleian Collection.

Similar to the slightly later 'improved' "Pirate of the Isles," thread 123706.
According to Henry Mayhew, from the same unnamed song sheet writer.
