Subject: Lyr Add: GNU SONG (Michael Flanders, Donald Swann) From: GUEST Date: 19 Sep 09 - 09:56 PM Researching Umbuntu - which led to Lynux - which led to GNU - which led to: http://www.poppyfields.net/poppy/songs/gnu.html (A shame our own gnu is not a unix one - I need some help with a boot) The Gnu Song A year ago last Thursday, I was strolling in the zoo When I met a man who thought he knew the lot He was laying down the law about the habits of baboons And the number of quills a porcupine has got So I asked him "What's that creature's name?" and he answered "That's a helk!" And I'd have gone on thinking that was true If the animal in question hadn't put that chap to shame, And remarked—"I ain't a helk—I'm a gnu! I'm a gnu—I'm a gnu The g-nicest work of g-nature in the zoo I'm a gnu—how do you do? You really oughtta g-know w-who's w-who I'm a gnu—spelt G - N - U I'm not a camel or a kangaroo So let me introduce, I'm neither man nor moose Oh, g-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu!" I had taken furnished lodgings down at Rustington-on-sea Whence I travelled on to Aston-under-lyne On the second night I stayed there I was wakened from a dream Which I'll tell you all about some other time Among the hunting trophies on the wall above my bed Stuffed and mounted was a face I thought I knew A bison? An okapi? Could it be a hearty beast? Then I seem to hear a voice—"I'm a gnu! I'm a gnu—a-g-nother gnu I wish I could g-nash my teeth at you I'm a gnu—how do you do? You really oughtta g-know w-who's w-who I'm a gnu—spelt G - N - U Call me bison or okapi and I'll sue Nor am I in the least like that dreadful hearty beast Oh, g-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu! G-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu! G-no, g-no, g-no, I'm a gnu!" By - Flanders & Swann according to the above link. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: GNU song From: Artful Codger Date: 20 Sep 09 - 05:30 PM Written, of course, by Michael Flanders and Donald Swann, and recorded on their album At the Drop of a Hat (1959). The success of this song prompted them to write a slew (shrew?) of other animal-themed songs, most of which appeared on their album The Bestiary (1961). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: GNU song From: Bernard Date: 20 Sep 09 - 06:00 PM So there was a family of gnus trying to cross a river infested with crocodiles. Father gnu tried first, but was eaten within minutes. Mother gnu was the next to attempt the crossing, but she was also devoured by the hungry crocs. Baby gnu reasoned that the crocs were now satisfied, so crossing would be easy... but he was wrong. That is the end of the gnus, now here is the Weather Forecast! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: GNU song From: olddude Date: 20 Sep 09 - 06:40 PM ubuntu grub loader has a problem on some boxes, you are fine just go back to the install CD and reinstall the grub loader nothing else. ubuntu will then boot fine. If it is a windows machine change the bios from auto to the Hard Drive you are using ... that works many times also |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: GNU song From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 20 Sep 09 - 06:41 PM Flanders & Swann songs, like Tom Lehrer's, are even better if you have the introductions. This song was apparently inspired by someone who parked outside Flander's house every day, and had a car with a GNU numberplate. |
