Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Dan Schatz Date: 02 Nov 09 - 12:10 AM We could have, Severn. We were each prepared with three songs, and we had at least two others we cut at the last minute. But it was getting late. Pity - I was looking forward to a banjo duet with Cathy Fink on "Sing in the Spring" - it was fun when we worked it up before the show. Maybe next time. Dan |
Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Severn Date: 01 Nov 09 - 12:04 PM A wonderful time with great performances and stories, and you got the feeling that they could've gone on with more had time allowed. |
Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Janie Date: 31 Oct 09 - 10:12 PM Thanks Bill. Beginning to get the "feel" of it. |
Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Bill D Date: 31 Oct 09 - 09:14 PM *smile*.... Janie...there were people there that I hadn't seen in years. folks came from far & near and happily bought CDs and there were many volunteers. the stage was a happy mix of locals, Utah's sons, and performers from 'other areas'...all of whom seemed glad to be with each other and part of this amazing event. Musicianship was amazing. Ed Trickett did "Telling Takes Me Home" and "Goodnight Loving Trail" as well as i have ever heard them....and Saul's "Starlight on the Rails" was slow, and paced differently than even Utah did it....it was evocative and drew you into the song, rather than just 'presenting' a good song TO you. ...and Elizabeth LaPrelle's 2nd song, "Walking Down the Lonely Street", was amazing! She nailed it, and Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer played for her, and gave it a really wonderful backup. It was like they had rehearsed for hours. ......more, if I can remember more... |

Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: kendall Date: 31 Oct 09 - 07:13 PM Sigh. Anyone know how I can contact Duncan or Brendan? |
Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Bill D Date: 31 Oct 09 - 07:00 PM It was a fine evening...and in a hall where Utah had performed several times. When Duncan told Utah style stories, I could almost feel an extra presence...chortling in the background. I especially enjoyed Saul Broudy's stories of his early days meeting Utah and getting to travel with him. (it was sort of funny when Dan began to 'explain' how to sing along at one point, and half the audience already knew the details....fun!) |
Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Dan Schatz Date: 31 Oct 09 - 05:14 PM We had a great time - Duncan sure has his father's gift of gab. It was a fun night, and we raised good funds for Hospitality House and sold lots of CDs for Utah's lingering expenses. Dan |

Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Dan Schatz Date: 29 Oct 09 - 05:45 PM Hey, if producing this CD has taught me nothing else, it's taught me there's a difference between being a bum (Hallelujah!) and being a lousy bum. Mick, thank goodness, is the former. Dan |
Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Bill D Date: 29 Oct 09 - 05:08 PM We can all sing "Hallelujah HE'S a Bum" in Mick's honor.... ☺ |

Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: GUEST,Dan's laptop Date: 20 Oct 09 - 05:04 PM I wish you could be there too, Jacqui - you and Kendall put so much love and energy into this project. I'm glad, though, that so many of our performers - and Duncan - will be part of the show, and that Charlie Pilzer, who mastered the CD (a Herculean task, let me assure you) will be running the sound. Dan |
Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Oct 09 - 06:11 PM I wish that we could be there, but in addition to the distance problem, we will be at a very special birthday party in Maine the next day. |

Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Dan Schatz Date: 13 Oct 09 - 01:26 PM This concert is a couple of weeks away. What a treat to have so many good folks together singing Bruce's songs. Dan |

Subject: RE: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Dan Schatz Date: 29 Sep 09 - 12:12 PM We (the musicians) have started talking about the songs each of us wants to do and stories people want to tell - it's amazing how little overlap there is. Bruce wrote songs that touched folks on many, many levels. The plan is to do the concert as a big round robin. I'm very excited. I'm also excited because it looks like Utah's daughter will be in attendance - so all three of Utah's kids will be there for the celebration. Dan |

Kendall, we could have one in Maine - when and where? Dan |

Subject: Wash DC Utah Phillips Tribute Oct 30 '09 From: Dan Schatz Date: 21 Sep 09 - 12:54 PM The Folklore Society of Greater Washington (better known as the good people who bring you the Getaway) are sponsoring a special Utah Phillips night on October 30. Here's what it says on the FSGW website: "Singing through the Hard Times" Friday Oct 30, 2009 at 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM Washington Ethical Society (Washington,DC) "Celebration of Bruce "U.Utah" Phillips' music and his life as labor organizer, folk singer, storyteller, poet and the "Golden Voice of the Great Southwest." His children and several performers who sang on the tribute CD "Singing through the Hard Times" will join us. The lineup includes Saul Broudy, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Elizabeth LaPrelle, Magpie, Lisa Null, Duncan Phillips, Brendan Phillips, Dan Schatz and Ed Trickett. Check back for updates. This is a benefit for Hospitality House, which Utah founded in his home town of Nevada City, CA." I'm extremely pleased and grateful that so many top-notch performers have decided to come together for this, and that the Folklore Society is making it all happen. It's especially wonderful to have Duncan and Brendan Phillips flying all the way out from the West to join us. Dan |
