Well said Harp. It seems a shame to have to be so careful with a turn of phrase, for often it is in the intuitive response that the beauty of language, or admirable wit, comes to be seen. This time your careful phrasing has expressed what attempts at pithier and wittier formulations have not been seen to express. And, for the avoidance of doubt, this is not intended to imply that your expression was merely pedestrian.

Gargoyle, Well, you did say you were there in the 70's, in Orono, I mean. And that's where the University of Maine is. And I also know you play the piano and your dog likes it. But is s/he really a pit bull? And you play various squeeze boxes, as well. But do you live in California now? Also, you seem to be a bit of a stoic. People say you haven't revealed yourself, but I disagree with that. You have said alot about yourself in a cryptic fashion....and through your consistent approach to life. I agree with Moonchild.

One of the reasons it seems so bad is that we have so many threads spawned for the same reason.

Could we put any constructive contributions in one place. This is probably where most of the positive suggestions are to found.

I know I'm repeating some of what others have said, but, here goes, anyway. I see a distinction between putting a person's name in a thread title when we are speaking positively (birthday, illness, radio show, new recording, etc.) & when we are speaking negatively (like now!!!). Most of the time, I think threads should be of general interest, not aimed at individuals, pro or con. If we want to speak mostly to one person, we have resources for that--personal Mudcat message &, for some, email, ICQ, etc. Let's think what ought to be public & what is better expressed privately or not at all. Art/Rick (I think) raised a good point that we sometimes post things that we would never say to a person's face. Anonymity should never be an excuse for unkindness. As a minimum,it may very well backfire on the speaker. Many of us have been meeting each other in person or have plans to do so in the next few months. Wouldn't you rather someone thought, "Gee, it's nice to meet him/her!" rather than "Oh, that's the jerk who said _____!"? Unkindness impacts the perpetrator as well as the recipient; it doesn't get us where we want to be. A quote which is meaningful to me (w/ slight editing, from the Bible--James 1:19a-20): "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for anger does not bring about righteous life." We have many types here at Mudcat; it makes our community rich. Many have strong beliefs & passionate personalities. It is possible to express them without personal attacks on individuals. I think we need to work at both being self-regulating & giving each other the benefit of the doubt when our feelings are hurt (as they sometimes will be). Censorship is something I don't want to get into.

Thanks to all of yoou. I took this thread the wrong way and wasn't going to dignify it with a posting, but you all've changed my mind.

I really haven't been bothered by Gargoyle's postings. I was more concerned for those directly involved in the "Troubles" and how his discussion effected them. I think they were mean-spirited and unnecessary, but, for some reason, I really didn't get emotionally involved/wounded/whathaveyou.

As Catspaw says, "If you don't respect his opinion, ignore it." That's what I intend to do.

Rick, no apology needed. Being a knight in shining armour wouldn't have been worth missing the day you had yesterday.**BG*

I'm not happy at this as a way of dealing with the problem. Have you noticed how g. seems to have two different personas? Even down to the grammar. But it is hard to divide the two according to spelling or anything else. Doesn't it seem that that may indicate a different sort of problem?

The postings to Kat were horrid. I would feel awful if I found something like that aimed at me. Sympathy, Kat.

But, something is wrong here. Ignoring the unpleasant side, responding to the reasonable would be a better way, wouldn't it?

Allan - hold the phone, This posting obviously came out wrong. I didn't create this with the intention of wounding Gargoyle, and I'm sorry to have caused offence.

My intention, as Rick has guessed, was to try to defuse the situation by interpreting his suggestion in a humorously-literal-minded kind of way. This has clearly failed, and only because we can't have any idea what sort of person a poster actually is.

Please don't take any umbrage. It was wrong to include a person's name in the thread title as I did.

It was my suggestion, posted in the "sense of humour" thread. This morning I ammended it, since I can't bring myself to laugh either. Since I've spent only a few minutes on the Cat over the last few days, I hadn't seen the gentleman's revolting postings aimed at Katlaughing on the "Aussie Band" and "Unrepentant.." threads. We've often jumped in to support one of us who has felt uneasy or threatened. Well, Kat, I apologize, I should have been in sooner.
I draw my line in the sand a little less ridgidly than some, but those comments are inexcusable, and for me, unforgivable.
Although I have opinions on the issue, I stay clear of the "troubles" threads, because they are obviously painful enough for those who have personal ties to the situation, and one more somewhat uninformed post isn't useful in any way. This is different however. It's VERY personal, and has needlessly hurt one of our most positive-thinking friends.
Thanks Dai, for reminding me that laughter is not a cure-all for everything.

I scarcely know how to express my anger and disappointment in seeing this and other threads aimed at injuring another. Gargoyle is a fellow human being. Admittedly, he is one who may not hold to popular ideas and perhaps not always given to expression in an appropriate fashion; but he, like the rest of us, deserves simple respect. Respect can never be expressed by threads of this sort. Most people understand that there are many ways of showing respect. With some, you can listen quietly to what they have to say and then decide whether a response would be useful or productive. With others, it is probably best to exhibit the kind of respect due to a rattlesnake. Keep your distance and let them rattle all they want. Eventually they wander away. I hope this thread does the same.
