I bought a laptop on sale with Vista installed a couple of years ago. Compared to XP, it seems to me it suffers from the Microsoft disease of "too many ways to get there". Other than that, I've found it to be more stable than XP, better on the internet, and less likely to pick up viri than XP. If you force yourself to get into Vista, you can put together routines and resources for yourself that will get things done efficiently, but it definitely seems more of a chore and 'busy desktop' than XP.

I like Linux and when my XP machine went down with viri, I installed a Linux boot disk on it to get off my files and give me some operating capability. Linux requires you to get into things in order to install and maintain your operating system. If you have the time and inclination for that level of involvement, you could be very happy.

If you are seeing BSOD w Vista, it is likely more due to something infecting your machine, a hardware blip, or an install problem.

If you have a legal copy of Vista and internet access, you can go to microsoft for assistance, you can get also get help at www.techguy.com but you have to be very specific about how your system is set up and what is going wrong. They have some very helpful experts there.

Well - I persisted and here I am, sat at my Ubuntu desktop browsing t'interweb. The Belkin 4XX adapter still ain't communication but at least I can see it now and, usig the TP-Link adapter, can browse ieas for sorting the Belkin out:-)

John - Get VmWare or VmPlayer for linux and run a virtual windows machine in that to run your piece of windows software. Surprisingly virtual machines seem to run better than real ones!

My only issue with linux is that on the machine I really want to run it on the wireless network card is not supported for Ubuntu:-( Other than that I endorse your comments wholeheartedly.

I echo Tootler's comments.

I'm running Ubuntu Linux on 2 machines. They boot up very quickly, do pretty well everything I want in half the time it takes when the same machines run on Windows XP - apart from one bit of software that only runs under Windows.

I'm very happy with Ubuntu Linux.

First of all, Vista did not work with my HP printer... I went thru hours and hours with tech support, downloaded drivers, etc. and nuthin'... Had to by a printer...

Next, this sumabich just locks the heck up... Refuses to do anything... EWon't recognize my keyboard 'er nuthin'... I've defragged it, don't use much of it memeory but it still locks up and pouts.. Usually when it doesn that I have to just turn the sumabich off and come back the next day... never happened on my XP... Never... Nuthin' else has changed except this friggin' loonie computer with Vista...

Ask me how much fun it is to have yer computer just take a two hour break at the same two hours you have to play on the thing... Yeah, just ask me...

Vista sucks!!!

Ditch Vista and install Linux.

I more or less did that. I got fed up of MS Nanny software in WinXP, long bootup times and lengthy pauses while the computer chattered to itself whenever I wanted to do something that I downloaded and Installed Ubuntu Linux. I actually have a dual boot system as I cannot ditch Windoze completely as there is some software I have to run that will not run in Linux, but I have no regrets and Linux is certainly quicker and more stable and needs fewer resources to run effectively.

I am still trying to get to grips with mumblin's vista computer. Pain in the posterior. It closes down whenever it feels like installing updates, or it did until we found a way of telling it not too. There are too many ways of doing things too. Long live XP!!

Can't say I've had any horrible problems with Vista, either. But then I'm kind of a geek, and this stuff if second nature to me. I wonder how the Women's Center would survive if I didn't do computer maintenance there almost every week. Today I had to install Vista Service Pack 2. There was a little glitch that was stopping the install, and it took me about ten minutes to Google up a solution.

But before I took over, our computers were maintained by the boyfriends and brothers of our college interns, and they were a mess.

Vista works fine for people who know what they're doing (but by now, you'd think Microsoft would have come up with an operating system that doesn't need a technician to keep it going). I can't say it has any more or fewer problems than XP.

Like others, I have Vista on a 32 bit laptop (for about 18 months) and a 64 bit desktop (6 months) and haven't had any OS-related problems.

First thought - try to remember when this all started, and do a "system restore" to the day before.

Could be software or hardware. I have Vista (on an HP btw) as well as on a super-duper self made mega gaming machine. No problems on either. My first reaction is always memory - Anyway you can work on only half and then see if the problem still occurs? If it does swap the half still in for the removed half and try again. If you still get no joy try upgrading your firmware. Last shot beofre giving in to the 'pros' - try one of the many system checkers that you see advertised when browsing the web. Steer away from Symantec and the big boys and you should find something either free to try or pretty cheap. CHECK INDEPENDANT REVIEWS FIRST! and back up your system of course, but you would always do that wouldn't you? :-)

I've got a Dell Vista laptop which crashes as described, with the rather unusual variant of and orangy green screen of death rather than the customary blue one -I just make sure I save regularly -seems to happen at random and is just a bit of a nuisance.

What make of PC do you have?

The reason I ask is that I have been using Vista for 2 years now ... I actually like it ... but I was introduced to Vista when it came as the operating system for my new laptop ... an HP .... the machine (motherboard) died 14 months ... 2 months past it's warranty ... what you are explaining sounds somewhat familiar to what I experienced ... apparently I'm not the only one who had issues with HP laptops from that era ... it was quite common.

Regardless I'll never purchase another HP.

I finally got tired of Vista and wrote to Microsoft telling them that Vista sucks, and that I will never buy another PC. Meantime, I'm having my computer guru deep six the damned nuisance and install XP.

I've had Windows Vista at home for over two years now (on a machine from new) and it has regularly crashed (goes to blue screen) even when I've closed all application and clicked on the shut down button. Recently, however, it seems to be crashing a lot more often than it did, before it was a pain now it's getting to the point of throwing the effign thing through the window.

Before resorting to professionals or spending money are there any checks I can carry out or settings I can manipulate that could help?
