Subject: Lyr Add: Ode to John M. Ross From: MCMC Date: 30 Sep 09 - 01:08 PM ODE TO JOHN M. ROSS (to the tune of "Rolling Down To Old Maui" - adapted by M. Moore-Campagna) We gather here to sing the praise of a colleague and a friend He had a lot of varied interests and served them to the end Although he was an East Coast native, he made the West his home And he always would return again, no matter how far he'd roam Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, Rolling down to old Maui He's homeward bound in the Puget Sound Rolling down to old Maui An accomplished writer of technical books, and a font of knowledge too His friends would oft' consider him their local tech guru He served his neighborhood council well and always stayed involved And he worked on local challenges until they were resolved Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, Rolling down to old Maui He's homeward bound in the Puget Sound Rolling down to old Maui The work he'd done in the U.S. Coast Guard served him in good stead He brought his radio knowledge and a will to get ahead The Seattle Folklore Society and the Mudcat Café found His music collection and library were a source of great renown Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, Rolling down to old Maui He's homeward bound in the Puget Sound Rolling down to old Maui The Northwest Folklife Festival staff would see him every May His Band Scramble box clutched in his arm, to the stage he made his way He'd assemble musicians from near and far and put them each in a band And the trophies he and John Watt made for the winners were quite grand Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, Rolling down to old Maui He's homeward bound in the Puget Sound Rolling down to old Maui At harvest time, his cider press was requested far and wide And the cider he received in return he then consumed with pride A toy train fan, he'd often volunteer at the railroad show Where he showed the kids from all around how model trains could go Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, Rolling down to old Maui He's homeward bound in the Puget Sound Rolling down to old Maui Although he's gone from among our midst, his spirit still remains In the things he loved: the music, cider, radio, books and trains He has been committed to the waves, as befits one who loved the sea He'll be drifting around in Puget Sound, rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, Rolling down to old Maui He's homeward bound in the Puget Sound Rolling down to old Maui |
