Subject: Thought for the Day (July 20) From: Peter T. Date: 20 Jul 99 - 10:31 AM "The Home Secretary is particularly strong against books. If we can't stamp out literature in this country, we can at least stop it from being smuggled in from outside." -Evelyn Waugh (from Vile Bodies, I think). |
Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (July 20) From: Penny Date: 20 Jul 99 - 11:27 AM Sometimes they let this message get too visible. In the "Protect and Survive" booklet for the occasion of nuclear war, it was suggested that we used books to construct our indoor shelters to keep out radiation. I always thought this would be the prelude to removing them as too dangerous. Penny |
Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (July 20) From: Fadac Date: 20 Jul 99 - 04:03 PM When the Nazis took over Germeny one of the first things they did was to "clean" the libruarys of all bad books. When the Americans came, the cleaned the libruarys of all the nasty nazi books. I think all that was left was nursry rhymes. -Fadac |
Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (July 20) From: Allan C. Date: 20 Jul 99 - 04:32 PM I have read a number of books which seemed to be doing their part to "stamp out literature". But no matter how terrible they might be, I simply cannot bring myself to throw away any of them. |
