My father used to sing this song every fall as we were raking the oak and pecan leaves. He said it was about a little girl who was dieing and her father tied the leaves to the trees. He also had a tendency to make stuff up so I have no idea if it was a real song

Your dad was telling the truth! Author, composer and lyrics are here is one version, anyway, and it was good enough for Grandpa Jones.

Your question started me thinking, trying to remember a short story by O Henry which I found right here.

Many besides Grandpa Jones did a version of it...Elton Britt, Kenny Roberts, Moon Mullican, etc

And going back even farther, Mac and Bob (Lester McFarland and Robert Gardner) probably about 1930.

See also this Mudcat thread started back in 98 with some updates in 07: Lyr Add: I'm Tying the Leaves So They Won't Come... It contains lyrics, link to sheet music and a link to a cylinder recording.
