I see that Water Aid are promoting a Big National Ceilidh again this year.
Last year it felt really good to be part of it. And it is a very good cause.
But will it be the same this year? A lot of bands worked without fee, and ceilidh series did without their profit. And there are other worthy Charities that people want to raise funds for. There don't seem to be many pins on their map.

I got the impression that the Olivers were pressured by Water Aid into doing it again this year, against their own better judgement.

I was certainly very pleased to be part of it last year, both as a ceilidh organiser and band member, and we were proud to have raised over £1000 for Water Aid. However, as Mo points out, the bands effectively donated their fees, and the ceilidhs their profits, and to be honest we thought it was a bit much to be asked to do the same again so soon. Also, we thought turning it into an annual event rather removes the impact of the original idea.

It is possible that at some future date we might put on another charity ceilidh, possibly for Water Aid, possibly for a different cause, but we did not feel able to support it this year.

..a very worthy cause. So many other problems can be cured by a reliable clean water supply.

Not just the water supply either. Much of their work is on proper sanitation at the other end of the water cycle. And a lot of it is educational work, so the benefits to the communities they help are enormous compared with the resources they need to put in.

OK, I'm biased - my sister used to work for Water Aid...
