It snowed in Montana earlier this week. It melted in lower elevations today, but tonight we expect a snow storm that will last.
'sigh'
It has been known to snow any month of the year here, but...
Snow storms don't usually hit until Halloween night, when the kids have to wear parkas over their costumes, but it is coming early this year. I'm not happy about that!

Not in Alaska! At least, not in southeast Alaska. There is fresh snow on the mountain tops and in the mornings the wharf is slick and slippery with a light freeze but there has been no flying snow. The temperatures have dropped to the low 30s at night but after the fog burns off it is clear and warmish all day.

This time of year I always like to recall KT's line in Wondrous Gift of Love (revamped to be a wedding song): 'May you always see fog's promise of a bright new day.'

Well, it was forecast to snow in town last night, it felt like it would snow (we have lots of snow on the mountains around town) so I moved the potted plants inside yesterday. I put the snow shovel on the front steps and said goodbye to the green leaves still on all the trees.
I woke up expecting to see white.... and it is still green outside. The sky is grey, though, so the forecasted snow may come today. I'm not ready!

Ah, now the flakes are coming down. Strange that the trees are all leafy green and suddenly we have snow, instead of the usual autumn cold snap that makes them turn and fall before the snow comes.

... and the cold causing the sugar in the leaves after photosynthesis stops to be the color of the leaves. Some of the trees have started turning, but it was still warm enough that for the most part, the chlorophyll was still there.

Alice.... thank goodness that here in Atlantic Canada the trees loose their leaves in advance of such wet snows. That is hardly enough snow to sniff at here, but the timing of it is horrendous! The damage caused by that combination is nasty! Hope peeps are okay.

Down here at the other end of the world we have been enjoying a lovely warm spring but last weekend a storm hit the country and snow cut off the middle of the North Island. People trying to drive between the north and the south were stuck while the Desert Road was closed and the Napier/Taupo road was closed and the Central plateau was covered in snow. You can see the snow on the ranges from here but it didn't reach sea level.
My niece was heading off for a week long family holiday, starting from Wellington last Sunday and ending with a visit to us in Hawke's Bay on Thursday but they only reached Taihape and were stopped. They considered a back route to Napier but driving on unsealed roads in the snow was not really an option. They tried to head for New Plymouth but were stopped again, so they bought McDonalds at Bulls and went back home. A 7 hour holiday!
But that was a lot warmer than some people who were stuck in cars in the snow. A workmate was due back yesterday but she has been stuck at Taupo since Sunday.

We tend to get these damaging heavy snows when the trees have leafed out in SPRING. This is early for this deep and wet a snow storm, before the Autumn leaves have fallen.

Snow, if any, is a long way off here. Daytime temps starting to bounce around a bit with some days in the low to mid 80's and some in the low to mid 70's. We are getting some gentle rains which we need, and the nights are definitely cooling down.

The snowstorm in NZ is in our papers here.
It has warmed up a little today but we can still see snow on the top of the ranges.
The Napier/Taupo Road has re-opened and most of the cars have been rescued. But now the forecasters are saying we face a wet weekend.

On the South coast of England the colours in the leaves are beautiful this year - rather delicate, but so many shades of yellow to orange.

Some years they are like flames, but this is quite unusual.

It will be something to take photos of if we have any deep snow - we usually get a few flurries and a few frosty mornings, maybe a bit of fog now and again.

I have not yet had to put on anything over my tee shirt when going outside, that will not be until a few weeks closer to Christmas.

Last week we had record-low high temperatures for the date (around 60), with lows in town in the upper 30s, and frost warnings in the area (and a cold wind!). Everyone was excited about putting sweaters on. (Or I was, at least!)

This week, we're having record highs -- around 90F.

No snow in sight... sigh.

It snowed in north central Pennsylvania last night leaving a dusting of snow on the ground. It was cold here too....we had the woodstove AND pellet stove both going. At the moment, noon on the following day, I have let the fire die and the pellet stove is off...it's a beautiful day and the snow is gone.

We got our first snow of the the year tonight, here in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. The weather bureau predicts we'll be snowed in by morning. It's very pretty just now, with maybe an inch on the ground.

I remember a time when I thought it NEVER snowed in California - but when I first moved here permanently in 1973, we had to take the train because the highways were closed by snow. I had been stationed in Monterey in 1971 in the Army, but didn't experience California snow until 1973. I'm chicken when it comes to driving in the snow - there are steep drops off the roads around here in the foothills, even steeper than in the High Sierra. I could roll a hundred feet downhill off our driveway if I slipped off the roadway.

That weather's rolling into Arizona, now. There are blizzard warnings for the northern part of the state -- 2 feet of snow predicted for elevations over 6000', and wind gusts to 50mph. There will be snow visible on the mountains above us here for sure, rain in town, temp not to get out of the 50s today in Tucson.

Skiff of snow, but the below zero temps are the bad part.
Last night the cold water pipe to the kitchen faucet froze - the first time in over 22 years of owning this house that I've had a frozen pipe, although I had a frozen drain from that sink last winter. Thankfully today it was not bad enough to break, just an easy fix by opening the cupboard and setting a heater nearby. I'm not looking forward to driving over the continental divide to Butte today. Dangerous cold.

Oh, it's gorgeous this morning - and we're snowed in. No way I'm going to drive a mountain driveway with 8 inches of snow. My stepson is desperate to get to college today because he doesn't want to miss a calculus quiz. We told him he can walk to the freeway and hitchhike.

I remember times when I was stuck in snow and my boss in San Francisco was threatening me with hellfire and damnation if I didn't get to work. I ignored him, and wiser minds above him prevailed. Sure is nice not to have obligations, to be able to stay home and enjoy it instead of fighting it.

Whoo-eee, ride me high - Joe ain't goin' nowhere!
(but I'm sorry for my angry stepson. Now he's cursing the telephone, pacing back and forth, and detracting from the peaceful beauty of the snow. Oh, well.)

Yesterday I drove up into the mountains to gather greenery for wreaths. I had to go a long ways before i found living trees...
the fire from last year wiped out 60,000 acres of forest around here.

I make wreaths with grape vines from my garden...
some of them survived the fire and put out new growth this year.

then i tuck bay laurel leaves in with sprigs of red Toyon berries.

I found some huge sugar pine cones and some fragrant fir boughs
and as i was returning the snow was starting...a great way to
celebrate winter.

Joe. I used to work at a Crown Corporation and my ex worked Directly for the Federal gov't. She would call me when they got word to go home during a storm. I would start to get ready to leave and say the rest of them were nuts to stay in such a bad storm and to dock my pay if they felt I should stay. Of course, before I would leave the building, the order to evacuate would be given.

There was snow falling at the summit as I drove from Scotts Valley to San Jose this morning -- just an occasional flake, a light dusting on the landscape, and white mountain icing on all the trees, and no snow or ice on the road yet: just enough to be gorgeous without being the least bit treacherous. I feel so blessed!

Finally! We have a skiff of light snow in the Banana Belt of Colorado. All around us, in the mountains, there is plenty coming down and, of course, they've had lots more before this. I love the way it damps down sound...it is a beautiful hush which brings sounds of nature more clearly than over the rush of a regular day. I don't think we'll get much, but it sure is pretty.

We've been getting dire forecasts for about a week now, consistently indicating that "disabling snow and freezing rain" will hit within 24 hours. Thus far, 24 hours have passed about 4 times (4 days in a row) with only a light dusting of snow lasting a half hour or so this evening - with no visible remnant an hour after it faded.

About 50 to 70 miles north of us however, they have had 5 to 7 inches of snow, with some traffic difficulties on the interstate. Around 70 miles to the south there are reports of significant amounts of freezing rain. And the Interstate (I35) that clips the southeast edge of town has had "poor travel conditions" east by northeast of here for about the past two or three days.

The evening news tonight (well, yesterday) predicts some freezing rain on the streets for the morning commute; but I expect to sleep through it.

We've had daily high temps of around 45F (7C) or a little above until Sunday, but it has been dropping and today's topped off at about 25F (-4C), low around 12F (-11C), and the radar and satellite views look like it may continue colder, enough to cause some deterioration in travel (and other outdoor) activities in the next few days. The cold front that's reportedly headed our direction seems to be losing most of it's moisture so it's unlikely we'll get a decent snow, at least for a week or so; but there's a good probability of some intermittent icing.

I plan to stay indoors for a while, until things are a little more stable. (Cold weather doesn't agree with my mature body functions like it did when I was child of 50 or so.)

Our forecast was changed at between 11AM and 4PM, but only slightly, from 2 to 4cm of snow tomorrow night to... Snow at times heavy beginning early in the evening changing to ice pellets then to periods of rain after midnight. Snow and ice pellet amount 15 to 25 cm. Rainfall amount 5 mm. Blowing snow in the evening. Wind southeast 20 km/h increasing to 40 gusting to 70 in the evening then becoming southwest 30 overnight. Temperature rising to 8 by morning.

They are a bunch of kidders! Hahahaha... hehehehee... hee.. wha?

The update for US Weather Today isn't pretty.

Locally, we're still not seeing much except a light dusting of snow and patchy light ice. Air temps right at freezing, so problems are only on isolated sheltered areas and bridges.

Across the US though, it looks like it's not a good day for a drive in the country. The misery is 3,000 miles wide and 1,500 deep.

I'll be darned if we didn't get more than that skiff! The valley actually has about 6-8 inches AND, most unusually, there was wind with it, so we've got drifts which remind me of Wyoming, some of them are 3-4 feet, piled up against any object in its path. It really is beautiful, but treacherous for driving, esp. for transplants from AmosLand:-) who don't know how to drive in it. Supposed to get more tonight. Amazing.

Well, we got snow in Detroit now. Went to the session up the road ('bout 5 miles) and there was about 1 inch on the ground when I came out, just before midnight. It was a little slippery driving home, but not too bad. These were big, fat, fluffy flakes that make for good packin' snow. But it's supposed to turn to rain in the morning, making for lots of slush.

I was out driving around town calling on customers yesterday in the below zero weather. It really slows things down and makes it harder to be productive. Right now I'm doing paperwork and phone work to stay inside this morning until it warms up a bit more to possibly a high of 3 degrees. The big prong on my 3 prong plug for the headbolt heater on the car is bent and I could not bend it back in place to plug it in. The car has been able to start, but the hotel wall where I'm parked has outlets if I could plug it in.

Believe me, if I could afford it, I'd be down in San Diego in Upstart Crow, drinking coffee and buying books, and looking at the ocean.

It difficult to illustrate, in photos, the depth of the snow when the dog won't stand still for contrast, but here are a FEW which kind of show how much we've got in the valley...MOST unusual amount! I like our house "guardian's" coif.:-)

It is sunny, cold, though not as cold as where Alice is, supposed to get to the teens, but it will be i below tonight, which is unheard of down here! There is still wind, too, which does make it feel much colder.

Yesterday, the guys across the street who hang out at the guy cave were putting plow blades on trucks. Today, they're using them. Last week, people were running outside in shorts. I'm not going to make it to the gym today, but I will put my tall rubber garden boots on and sally forth to find my snow shovel where I left it last Saturday, at the bottom of my porch steps. Then, I'll get my upper body workout and some cardio in.

Calgary should be two cities.
The north part of town is unprotected from the strong winds that come from the west and down the Bow Valley. Three days ago they got a big blow with snow and some drifts are up to six feet. Cars buried, and streets blocked, a mostly residential area.

The south part of town is protected by some low hills and is a little south of the main wind tunnel from the west. Only about 3 inches of snow and strong wind but not the 100 kilometer blow on the north side of town. No real problems.

The city had to concentrate on major throughways, so the north-siders had to wait 2-3 days to get the streets in their neighborhoods passable; the air was warmed by their cussing.

The 6-8" predicted was a bit more than 12, and as I shoveled, it got meltier and heavier. I got my workout anyway. Now it's just sloppy wet snow that will freeze overnight.

I'm not a big tourist, but right now a beach and a bucket of margaritas doesn't sound too bad, and IT'S NOT EVEN WINTER YET!

She went into work as usual but they closed the State offices at noon and she was able to make it home in no more than twice the usual time. I then chewed her out for parking her car face-in at our parking lot; it's a lot easier to blast out face-out when the plow truck comes.

Evidently I spoke too soon about the impact of the storm here. I just got a call from my mother who lives in her farm house on the coast and one of her massive chestnut trees came down last night smashing two big holes in the roof of her house.

We've got calls in with the power company, the tree surgeons, and the roofers. I'm heading down to photograph the damage. Sounds like a real mess but at least it's no longer raining.

Gnu- Tractor is TL's. Neither my hurt wrists nor my one 15 minute turn at driving it are sufficient for safely using the tractor to plow. Shoveling is temporarily crippling, but I won't run the shovel into the house or a greenhouse. :>)

Finished digging out the mailbox. Sprinkled ashes. Sun is warm and wind is calm for now. Getting cold this week; better haul more wood. Wonder why I am tired.

Our city fines us if the sidewalk at a house or business is not completely shoveled side to side down to bare cement within 24 hours of a snowfall. It is a real burden to people who cannot hire someone and cannot do it themselves. It has been often hard for me to get it taken care of when my son is not available, and I worry about coming home from being out of town and finding a $50 ticket on my door. I even went to neighbors to see if I could pay someone to do it when we could not, and no one could help. They are all struggling to do their own. I checked with hiring snow removers, and they want a signed contract for $450 - $500 per winter, which I could not afford. The shoveling ordinance is really a pain, but I've also been injured when a business didn't shovel and I fell, so I understand the public safety issue, too.

Alice... I have often wondered why the powers that be are so stunned. Why don't the mitigate the problem by investigating who cannot shovel and providing labour to do it at a reasonable price or paid for by taxes or whatever.

Yes, I know... gotta hire shovellers full time, insurance, stay out of private enterprise... BUT. If someone can't shovel and can't hire out, fining them is just stupid and cruel.

Alice the same fines for not shovelling here in Calgary, but luckily the man who mows our lawn in 'summer' clears sidewalks in winter. A burden on those who can't afford to pay help.

The city eventually gets around to clearing residential streets that become difficult, but most residential streets accumulate ice from each snowfall, so are filled to sidewalk level by melt time.
They do not clear the mouths of alleyways so a stretch of clear sidewalk is interrupted by a patch of ice and snow.

Thanks for asking. Dahlov is fine. She was more upset by misplacing her Christmas stamps than with the old chestnut tree almost taking out her house. She called me last night about 6 pm because she was in the kitchen and the whole house shook. She was wondering if there had been an earthquake. It wasn't till this morning that she realized that the chestnut tree was down in her front yard. By the time I got there (I live 30 minutes away) our neighborhood woodcutter was there as well. It was an impressive sight. It had come down on the roof, knocking in two holes, one in the attic and another in a bedroom, bouncing off into the front yard. Part of it came down on the roof of the adjoining studio, smashing in the soffit and roof overhang but didn't take out the main power lines. It missed the back-up generator shack but stove in the front stormdoor and smashed the railing to the front steps. Fortunately there is no serious damage to the house except for the roof work. Inside there is some plaster damage but very little water damage from the rain.

Meanwhile the woodcutting crew did a great job of chainsawing the tree trunk into more manageable bits. And weather looks fine for completing repairs by this weekend.

We're also going to have the remaining chestnut tree assessed, the one that stands directly in front of the house.

Oh, and mother found the Christmas stamps in her newspaper recycling box. She's very happy.

Coming from the Rocky Mountain West, when we moved to New England, I was in awe of those huge old trees and loved them all. I saw them torn up through the sidewalk, lain over like harpooned whales during a couple of hurricanes. It always makes me sad to hear of their demise. I am glad your mom is okay and damage was not too extensive, though AND that she found her stamps!

I put up more pix at that earlier link; ones a bit more interesting as they include our daft dog who puts his nose in the snow, rear end hiked up high, tail waving, and plows through only coming up for air. He loves it!

I do have a number of photos I took today of the storm damage for the insurance people, and I may place some of them onto my website.

My mother is 92 and doesn't appreciate changes to her home environment but she seems to have weathered this assault well. She even kept her chess appointment with her favorite neighborhood teenager. I left before the game finished but it looked intense.

The core of the tree trunk was so rotten it felt like styrofoam.

    Well, it did snow a bit in the night,and the churchyard which is my "garden" is an absolute picture. But of course, this being UK in the 21st century, everything has come to a standstill---no buses,no trains,all roads except major ones closed ; WFD,who lives 9 miles away,might as well be on the Moon,as her road is impassable, or at least it is to a front-wheel-drive Ford Mondeo,and there are no Arriva bus services from High Wycombe,apparently ! But of course,that is quite understandable ; I mean, there must have been nearly 3 inches of snow, a veritable blizzard by English standards, so it looks as if we are all doomed !!

10 cm or so in Surrey, England - some main roads have been gritted, but the Southern Rail trains were in a state of chaos this morning -absolutely pathetic. You would think that after some 170 years of rail services they could get it right. Quite apart from the garbled announcements at East Croydon - in English???? worst south London estuary I would say.

Interesting to see the number of people glued to their televisions down our road at the time I alone, took the trouble to put grit down to make it accessible.

We haven't had any new snow, but, unusually, we still have the snow which fell over a week ago. It would usually have melted by now, which it has a tiny bit and the streets are finally cleared, but it has been in the 20s and low 30s during the day, colder at night, just enough to keep it here. The birds have been grateful for the seed we've been putting out and the Christmas lights look pretty. Usually the valley is brown and drab this time of year.

I am reading up for a short road trip to Los Angeles.

I stepped out the front door to load things p and found myself staring into the teeth of an absolute blizzard of sunlight. It was so bright you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, It stacked up on the streets and bounced over the houses, painting everything in an unnaturally brilliant glow. Damn stuff was everywhere!! Almost makes me think it would be better not to drive, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

I've been through worse. I remember one dry season down in Guadalajara, there was so much sunlight it was running into the drainage system for miles and woke up every rat in town.

I can get through this and deliver the goods. But, man, it is bright. Warm, too.

We have not had snow - someone must have got ours by mistake.

Here we are, Christmas Day - a lot of people have had real trouble travelling to where they wanted to be for the holidays, and all we have had is a few scrapings of windscreens due to the low temperatures.

The South Coast of England is fairly mild in winter, usually, so the cold is different, and it seems to have done little else but rain for two months now.

It could be worse I supose, but I did feel just a little jelous of all those with snow to play with.

Unless something breaks overnight, weatherwise, we're going to be in pain. We have quite a bit of snow on the ground- maybe 8 or 9 inches - and then today it started raining. Of course, with the ground frozen there's nowhere for the water to go. Talk about sloppy.

However, we were told the temperatures were rising so no worries. BUT- instead- it is freezing and very slippery tonight. If it doesn't warm by morning no one is going anywhere much.

Remarkably, we had a white xmas here in Fort Worth and North Texas. WesleyS moved away too soon. What a lost opportunity!

I actually dug out some sand and rock salt to sprinkle so guests arriving late in the evening didn't kill themselves walking to the door, and so they could get their vehicle up the driveway. It isn't super steep, but one must slow to a stop to turn in, leaving no momentum to get up the icy surface without some help.

It's now turning to our normal winter rain, but here in Portland (West) I got back from sunny San Diego yesterday just a couple hours before the roofs and trees and streets got covered with at least a couple inches of snow.    My neighbors' little boy (3 y o) was in hog heaven making a snowman and learning how to toss little snowballs at mom and dad.   I had been home long enough to have the heat back up to about 70º and be able to watch the lovely white flakes from the cosy interior of my house, with my kitty cat snuggled up beside me.   (She snuggles a lot when I've been away for a while!)

Portland doesn't handle snow well -- we don't get enough of it, often enough to warrant the investment in top-notch snow-removal equipment -- and there were traffic jams, fender benders, abandoned cars, and even some buses stranded.   But it soon warmed up to the mid-30ºs or higher, so now we just have some slush left.

Oh, well, it was pretty while it lasted.

Unbelievably, yes! Another 2-3 inches on top of what was leftover from the snow of 3-4 weeks ago. At this rate, I shall have to quit calling this the Banana Belt of Colorado! It is really pretty but it takes ages for them to get to the side streets for clearing and sanding and most people don't seem to know how to drive in it. Exmouth, Devon, UK. Just doen't happen. On the few times it has in the past 25 years its never stayed overnight. You can see it on the hills across the estuary, or go up a mile or so to the common, but down by the sea it's rarer than Rocking Horse Shit. I'm glad about this....kids less so.

Yeah, been snowing off and on for a fortnight, and heavy falls predicted for the next 3-4 days as well. We get cut off for a few hours at a time most years, but not so far this winter, however we seldom get sustained snowing like this so it is unusual conditions all round.

Being at sea level snow seldom lies here in Whitby for more than a few hours (it's the surrounding moors that cop it, cutting us off) but this lot has never cleared properly since the first falls. It is right down to the harbourside too, almost unheard of.

"Our house" is the first picture (link above) is a 4-unit apartment building that we bought 10 years ago. The trees in front are maple and aggressively attack the house and the surrounding power lines but they are here to stay. The house itself was built in 1870 as a single family house but around World War 2, according to the newspapers we found stuffed in a wall petition, it was divided into four apartments. We've done quite a lot of renovation, converting storage space into living space. Now we need to see what we can do to better insulate this gift that keeps giving to the oil company. We're scheduling an infrared scan next Wednesday!

Another Met Office warning since my last, warnings now extend to Thursday including "significant accumulations, especially over hills" with tonight coldest, but heaviest falls tomorrow night.

Snow clearing will be a slow business as each new layer is packing into its predecessor, and our local authorities just aren't equipped or manned to cope. With temperatures just hovering around freezing there is enough melt-then-refreeze activity to make everything glassy and if the wind picks up and goes north-easterly as predicted this is going to be unpleasant. Very glad not to be going to sea any time soon.

I'll try to link to a couple of photos I grabbed from a webcam just before Christmas, Flickr, in case anyone would like to see the rare spectacle of Whitby fish quay with snow.

Still not a flake seen on this part of the South coast of England.

There is a light coating of frost on the cars and North facing surfaces - sometimes it doesn't melt all day, but not a bit of snow.

We have some bright clear days, we have some heavy overcast ones where the lights are on all day - but someone else is getting the snow.

It is raining in Lancaster, but the road surface is below freezing and so we have a nice sheet of ice developing! It should turn to snow later if it keeps falling.

Yesterday we visited the farmhouse in east Lancs and had to walk the final mile up the iced up road and through the drifts. It was beautiful in the sunshine but I don't know how long the oil supply will hold out to keep it above freezing.

I was right about the ice layer. I spent an hour this morning fending off other vehicles from parked cars before I managed to get my own Freelander down to the bottom main road. There was no way I was going to get up the road to the the top main road. The journey to work took 2 hours 40 minutes rather than the usual 35 minutes.

Around here we've had about 10 cm during the past 2 days, but other parts of Denmark have had up to 10 times that. Can't tell the difference between weather and climate. There's quite a lot of energy in the atmosphere in order to evaporate water from the oceans and move it around to where it meets cold air and precipites. Think of energy, not temperature.

And the substance GfS refers to is better for the atmosphere than hot internal gases some people generate.

OK, 10,000 plus schools are closed in the UK, at least 250 in Devon alone, no pavements gritted so people are walking in the roads, no side roads gritted, so there is hardly any milk because the lorries can't get to the farms and dairies.

Down here, the councils say they're so low on salt that the priority has to be the main roads. Our buses are only using main routes and there's only a few inches of the stuff on the ground.

Because so many children are home, everything else is suffering too, as parents have to stay home to care for their children...

On Radio Devon someone rang in to suggest they spray the roads with sea water..and the councils went "Doh, that could work!"...and they're asking farmers to help clear the roads with their tractors and farming equipment...


The thing is....winters were always like this when I were a nipper, although the wind chill is a bit different, I admit.

So, how come the Canadians still function normally in -40degrees yet the UK falls apart instantly as soon as the first flakes start to flutter...?

And are the councils going to now start keeping in proper stocks of grit and salt, or will their accountants tell them how financially wasteful it is?

The UK & other parts of Europe are caught unprepared for extreme climate conditions compared with Canada etc is because places like that have very cold winters every year, so they've evolved ongoing stategies to cope

A couple of suggestions from Vermont:

1) Get a pair of those gizmos that slip on over your boots and have steel cleats for ice. If they aren't available in Britain, get LL Bean to ship overseas.

2) Drive more slowly. (I readily admit that this only helps if everyone does it, but you gotta start somewhere.)

Yes, again here in Beverley, (East Yorkshire UK).

My daughter took 1.5 hours to travel 4 miles across Hull and said 3" fell in that time. I'm 10 miles north and it's diong the same here. I've seen -5 on my car thermometer but my twin, south of Edinburgh has reached -11 and has 10" of snow and the schools have closed. Further north, my sister in Blairgowrie mentioned -12 but up there the locals are more used to harsh weather and their schools are still open.... but had to pay out their 'coffee morning' profits to get someone to clear the playground!!
I'm so glad not to have to venture out and hope that the local football match is cancelled as it'll cause so many to risk the conditions. I know it's always important for the games to be played but sense should prevail and those Chelsea fans trying to travel to Hull will need to set off tonight to have a chance to get here for the early kick off (1245 I think)...It's on due to be on TV too.
Better go before the old man sees this comment. He's all set with his thermals and sheepskin jacket!
PS I love the snow all crisp, white and pretty, it's the thawing slush and muck that causes such trouble...time to go clear the ice rink at the end of the driveway!!

We have had one little snow shower, an inch or so at the most, but the ice is really bad, all the moisture in the air is being frozen out onto every surface - and untreated roads and pavements are trecherous underfoot.

When I went out I took ski poles with walking stick rubber 'feet' on, and although I only needed them once, I will not be venturing out without them until the ice melts.

The weather forecast has been for more snow in this area several times, and been wrong, but I suspect that tomorrow, Sunday, the wind will push so hard that the snow will reach us in the end.

My daughter flew from Heathrow to Chicago yesterday and the jet stream is so weak it took an hour less than scheduled.

Nope. We're into rain at the moment- and for the next few days, apparently. In the transition from snow to warm, though, we had icy conditions that made walking a problematic occupation. I found myself in trouble twice in 24 hours. couldn't decide whether to retreat the way I had come or chance it further on. The second time I suddenly discovered the proper method: instead of lifting my feet, I skated. Worked.

Back to the start of this thread in October... the early snow storms we had caused so much crop damage that the USDA has now declared our county (and 8 other Montana counties) a disaster area. Potato farmers here were particularly hard hit, losing 1/3 of their crops. It makes all qualified farms and ranches eligible for low interest emergency loans from USDA's Farm Service Agency. Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from Tuesday's declaration to apply for loans to help cover part of their losses.

Well, we are due for a change. It is still raining today and there is a lot of water pooling on top of the frozen ground. But they have now issued a Winter Storm Warning from about 9:00 tonight to tomorrow afternoon, for 6 up to 16 inches of snow. Oh, and wind.

I'm excited! Doesn't take much to excite me though.

The only thing I don't like about our snow this winter is that they have changed the melter- for the last few years what they had used is maple-nut icecream colored melt so it never got ugly. This year they're using some kind of dark substance that looks muddy. Poo.

My brother has been stuck in snow on the A38 just below Exeter where there has been an accident, for over 5 hours now. His wife saw his car on the BBC News at 6pm tonight, becuase she recognised the number plate,

I supose I should be glad that this part of the world - Poole, on the South coast of England, is not subject to the cruel weather that most of the UK has suffered, but I can't help feeling rather deprived.

We're under a new Winter Storm Advisory- this is the 4th one. They had been expecting rising temperatures and rain each but have had to revise each day. At this point, we, the common people, just dun know.

but it sure is pretty. On this morning's walk with my dog I tramped a few exits through the pillowed snow berms to the street with an eye toward crossing - but I found few places low enough to enter the other side. At a certain point I planned to tramp a path to the pier but the wharf itself was too deep for tramping and I had to give it up. My dog is ecstatic- she rolled and tunnelled and periodically disappeared from view.

kat... no... the weather here is actually quite fascinating as we are influenced by the Gulf Stream, the captive Appalacian Mountains. the North Atlantic with a fetch from the nor'east that reaches past Newfoundland, the fact that the Northumberland Straight has the warmest waters north of the Carolinas, that storms from the south stall over the Isthmus of Chignecto for days.... I could go on.

And, yes... I knew what you meant... just took the opportunity to say... we can get -40C to +40C, rain blown up your ass and snow bury your ass. It's always fun. I have pics.

Cloudy, -1ºC in "Northern" BC (that's in Canada), no new snow for a couple of days. More snow is expected Friday when my son makes his weekly 200km drive home from work for the weekend. :(

Drove by a nearby high school on Monday, -6ºC, t-shirt weather -- kids were walking home without coats.

Still no snow in Central South of England.

We had a couple of inches at the most, which melted after a few days and nothing since - though more has fallen regularly in other parts of England for weeks.

Yeah, we got it again in DC area...maybe 7=8 inches? It was cold, so was light & easy to scoop out of the way. (We often get wet snow here, at 31° or so, and I HATE shoveling that slop)

It will be back above freezing next few days, and this will gradually go away. (It better...we have our one day Mid-Winter festival next Saturday!)

I thought we had had our dose with what fell before Christmas and running onwards, it had mostly cleared by last weekend.

On Friday it started again with icy pellets blowing horizontally, though not a lot was lying.

Yesterday more of the same, and a couple of inches had built up, I shovelled the balcony clear-ish once the wind died and sun came out, but this morning reveals that there was no more melting and all the bits I didn't get to have frozen hard - should have found that blasted brush while I had the chance.

Still, we shouldn't grumble, I have never checked but am told we are on roughly the same line of latitude as Moscow. It is only the Gulf Stream that keeps our climate as warm as it is, so any of you guys who are down that way...Thanks, please keep it going.

We got snow last night here in DC, but this time it was wet & heavy at about 32°F. I went out and did 3" of shoveling at 10 PM, on the theory that it weighs less than 6" in the morning. Boy, was I right!

This morning, before the sun came out, the snow was falling from trees like a shower of white cotton-candy. It was a real "Winter Wonderland".

The warning also said there is a "good chance" that some parts of the area will see up to 20 inches of the white stuff, and compared the potential snowfall of this system to that of the record-setting storm that disrupted the city with 20 inches or more of snow last December. The NWS expects the snow to being falling late Friday morning, and to plan for "substantial disruptions" in travel around the Washington and Baltimore areas this weekend.

We does got snow.... I have shoveled and scraped 4 times now...maybe 6-8" worth. I guess that will mean that much less tomorrow, but I don't think it's gonna make much difference. At least my tall, physically capable son will be snowed in with us tomorrow, and can help.

It is not snowing where I live. In fact, it's almost spooky- here it is early February and it is so mild out there that it's like living a thousand miles farther south. No wind, no edge to the air (remember, the ice fields are just above us and we usually notice that), just a light drizzle barely wet the pavement. I just checked out record highs and for this date it was 48 degrees in 1977, average high being 33.

Our temperatures have been running around 43 degrees- at this rate the bears will soon be out and about.

I live in Bozeman, near two ski areas. The town sits at the base of the Bridger mountain range. Bridger Bowl ski area is on the other side of the mountains from town. Big Sky ski resort is a little farther away. The town is a snow pocket. It is high enough in elevation that just driving a few miles lower into the Gallatin valley, you don't see the deep accumulation of snow we get in town.

We are used to deep snow here, so building codes take that into account.
Something unusual has happened, though... two buildings have had roofs cave in from snow in just weeks of each other.

Well, after two weeks of balmy banana-y weather, the air has a little bite to it this afternoon, and last night it "snowed"- yeah, right. It snowed almost enough to be able to see your tracks in it.

The forecast is for warming.

The El Nino doesn't explain all of it. Three years ago we had an el nino and a warmer, wetter winter was forecast. That season we had a record-breaking snow season, followed by two other very snowy winter. This year we had a good bit of snow in November but hardly anything measeurable since.

El Nino doesn't deliver the same kind of weather every time it happens.

It does disrupts regular climate patterns, in a major way, in the years that it does happen (esp in continents around the Pacific).
But what happens locally in El Nino years is not always the same weather.

Nasty here in Michigan. Scraped off my car windows, and ran downtown a couple of miles to the gallery to swap art for a change of exhibits. Got out from there and scraped off the windows. Drove half way home and stopped for 10 or 15 minutes. Scraped off the windows to drive the last mile home. My wife will get off work in about 20 minutes, and ride the 35 miles home with her car-pooling buddy; don't think I'll really be able to relax until I know she's home.

Here are the directions for following a tradition from Sweden. When its cold and snowy, you make a little 'igloo' of snowballs and burn a candle inside it.

One night long ago, I was going to have board meeting at my house one winter night. I knew that people would be tired and discouraged that day, so I built one of these near my front door. One member said that her heart lifted at the sight of it, and that made it worthwhile for me.

I made the snowballs stick together by spraying them with water from a spray bottle and quickly pressing them down. Since the temperature was about 0 F, they froze immediately.

Winter storm warnings spanned the Gulf Coast states early Friday as the snow crawled east out of Texas, where it left the Dallas area with more than a foot of snow, nearly 200 traffic accidents and hundreds of canceled flights. When I moved to the D.C. area in early March, 1977, there was a heavy coating of ice & snow. Later, the local channel 4 weatherman reported that this was the first 'recorded' time that there was snow on the ground in all of the lower 48 states.
I suppose we may be near that again. The jet stream is taking quite a dip....

In Atlanta, Delta Air Lines canceled 1,100 flights for Friday in anticipation of as much as 2 inches of snow expected in the region. AirTran also said Friday that it was canceling more than 60 flights in or out of Atlanta because of the threat of snow.

[I guess it depends on what you're used to - and prepared for.]


A side note (in another article) is that the recent unusually cold weather is estimated to have produced a possible 50 percent(?) kill of some "invasive species" that have been a concern in Florida and adjacent areas recently - huge tropical snakes of a few kinds, iguanas, and some others. Lovers of "exotic pets" are of course citing this rare event in opposition to the recent import ban on snakes "big enough to eat our children."

A lovely 5-inch snowfall here in Mississippi. I actually got to put on boots and have snow crunch under my feet as I walked the happy but befuddled dog leaving tracks from one mailbox to the next. Beautiful fluffy stuff in the tall pines, the Leyland cypresses, the Bradford pear trees, and frosting the muscadine vines. Meanwhile, the cat is still pissed off about the whole thing.

This has been a hell of a fall and winter. I have great hopes that the floods and freezes will eradicate a lot of our bug friends which have been wintering over for too many mild ones.

Yes, for only the second time in the four years we've lived here. I like this kind of snow - a few inches of fluffy snow on everything but the roads once every few years, and it melts in a day or two.

We're in the middle of a full-bore sun blizzard here. The stuff drips from tree branches, runs along the streets, and stacks up in people's drives. In some areas people have to wear protective goggles and special lotions on their generous amounts of exposed skin. Traffic slows down due to the glare. Some people forget how to drive in full sun and have accidents until they re-learn their SoCal driving skills...

On the Anchorage news the other night they said they are experiencing April weather. Well, Anchorage is north and west of us about 600 miles and we in Juneau are experiencing March weather. After being sunny for several weeks it has turned rainy the last couple of days; the grass is greening and the rhubarb is up.

Prices will drop, but not by a lot I don't think. Once the major retailers have a price on sommat, they don't drop it much for at least the time it takes to pay for carrying the inventory over the past year. Of course, Maple Slurpup is a special case. It's not like spuds and peas and apples and... that can be fairly well predicted as to supply.

That said, I buy my Slurpup direct from a Sugar Woods about 6km away. I bring my own bottles and pay cash. I could tap my maple out back, but standing at the stove is not an option due to my Satanic nerve. It hurts like the devil.

UNREAL! My power bill for Feb 18 to Mar 18 is $273.23. And, I had all of the windows in the house cranked open for an hour or so in late afternoon on at least a dozen days. In a "normal winter, I'd expect $400 to $425. This warm winter has been a win-win for me.

And even the snow piled on the lawns is gone. Out like a lamb, too!

I'm surprised that no-one from Scotland has posted on this thread recently, so I'll do it on behalf of our northern neighbours. BBC news report last night showed horrendous snowy conditions in parts of Scotland with the deep snow, freezing temperatures and blizzards usually associated with the depths of winter. Today's news reports that a school bus has slid off a bridge in Lanarkshire due to the weather conditions and a number of children have been injured. I also see that parts of Eire and N. Ireland have got heavy snow as well.

Snow is a distant memory for us thankfully. March and April in South West UK can be such a strange couple of months it can either snow or severe hail storms with lambs having to be dug out or it can be a warm sunny lazing on the grass day and it has been like that now for a couple of days. Yesterday, I invited the Sacramento Song Circle to sing at my house in the Sierra Foothills of California, and we had a delightful wildflower hike before we sang. It wasn't warm, but it was very comfortable. This morning, May 15, I woke up to two inches of snow. That's the first time I've seen it snow in May in California.

It was all gone by 2 PM.

No snow in my area recently.

Last Monday afternoon it hit 100F (38C) in town, about 30F above the "seasonal norm." The following Thursday morning it was 33 F (0.6C) - almost 30F below normal. A few towns about 100 miles (160 km?) west (still in the state) were below freezing for a couple of nights with "light rain" - probably frozen pellets rather than droplets, but for the most part no place remotely close to the south and/or west has had enough precipitation of any kind to beat down the threat (and some places the actuality) of the range fires.

Our friends in the Texas Panhandle (about 180 miles away) say they are watering their cows with a teasoon (3 spoons per cow per day?) due to the 6 months of drought. But 160 miles straight east of them they've had some minor flooding, with only a half dozen of those annoying tornados.

Locally, the weather has been "unremarkable" but I'm wearing out the switch on the thermostat flipping it between heating a bit at night and cooling a little in the afternoon. (We're too old to stand those wide swings.)

There's a metal ring on the western end of my house. I never could figure out what it was for, but I think maybe it's for an anchor. The grass is happy, although it's the sort of "happy" that humans would be arrested for once the fire trucks and ambulances leave. It's been unseasonably cool here in northwest Florida. Morning lows below 50°F (10°C) and highs below 80°F (26°C). We're usually at lows around 70° and highs above 90° by now. This is more like our early April weather than mid-May.

The rain has let up but it's still cold. I expect that will change soon with tonight's full moon. Of course, we could still have frost in the next 31 days (3 days after the full moon in June is the rule of green thumb here).
