I was present when John Hughes recorded it in a garage studio in Rathfarnham in I think 1961. John had a lovely light tenor voice which soared in the chorus. The B side of the record was the
'Ballad of Johnny Doran' on which I had the privilege to contribute to
the backing vocals. If anyone has the lyrics of this ballad I would love to have them.

Hi - I made the programme on John McBreen, a really talented musician and writer. He wrote Lough Sheelin as he used to live beside it. If anyone needs any more information I can get it from John, as he lives beside me in Cavan.

In the radio interview linked at 07 Oct 09 - 11:42 Lough Sheelin begins at about 20 minutes into the interview and continues past the recording of the song.

It doesn't feature on any of my vast indexes under that title. Apart from the one you mention the nearest thing on broadside is 'Lough Erin's Shore' which is also about leaving places and a sweetheart. John Moulden's yer man. Try asking on 'Tradsong' or on 'Indiana Ballad List'. That should get John involved.

At least, I think thats the name of the song. Its not Lough Sheelins Side, thats a more trad one.

Thats about it. I know the tune, but just cant find the lyrics. Its a very old Irish song, at least its about ireland, composers could be US.

Any help greatly appreciated.
