Folks,

I have to take the Mudcat offline to fix up the backend a bit. The database has gotten a bit bloated over the years, and I need to perform a cleaning/compression that can't happen while the database is in use. Since it's so big, it should take all day. I hope to start on it first thing Sunday and hope it'll be done by a reasonable bed time. Thanks.

Max - how do the times work out in relation to your time over there and over in the UK?

Are you about 8 hours behind us?

Les, Mudcat is on the East Coast. I am in Colorado and about 7 hours behind UK i.e. if it is Midnight in London, it is 5p here in CO; while I am 2 hours behind Mudcat, so probably about 5 between the UK and Mudcat, I think. Hope that is clearer than mud.:-)

hmmm... how is 12 midnight UK time earlier than 7pm EST?

Greenwich Mean Time is at the time of this posting (approx)01:38 am Saturday Oct 10, 2009.

GMT - 4 = EST (for now ..when the USA 'falls back' then GMT - 5 will equal EST)
GMT + 1 = UK (for now ... when the UK shifts back to Western European time GMT + 0 will equal UK time)

It is dawn in the UK. Let's call it 6 am. Five hours pass. It is dawn in Mudcat land. Mudcat sets its clock to be dawn (6 am). But UK time is 11am, so the Mudcat clock is 11-6=5 hours earlier. Therefore UK time is 5 hours later than Mudcat, even though everything happens five hours earlier in the UK in absolute time.

The time thing does take some time to get your head round - I'm very used to it because I've been following American Football since the 80s, and you quickly get used to translating a 1pm kickoff into 6pm UK time. By convention all game kickoff times on NFL.com are stated in EST.

However my team is the 49ers, in San Fransisco, and they are on the West Coast PST which is three hours behind EST/Mudcate time (so 4pm EST = 1pm PST).

Not a problem until you actually get (a) to go to the States and (b) have tickets for a game, it wasn't until we arrived in SF that we realised that kickoff was actually 1pm local time, not 4pm. Luckily we realised on the Friday when we started looking at public transport out to the stadium, rather than on gameday :)
