I joined Rhapsody yesterday and have found lots of stuff new to me.

I probably should have googled for both awards and horror stories regarding music sites first but I trust mudcaters opinions and experience more.

I supposedly had a free month of Rhapsody when I bought my Sansa Fuze, but I could not figure out how to avoid them getting my credit card number and I wasn't sure if the music was DRM or pure mp3. So I've never been.

Yeah they want your number no matter what.

I find new stuff by making a broad search query like classical or Wierd or funny and listen to anything I find.

If I want to download something it costs 99 cents

I have 7,834,234 songs to go.

I guess most people just go to a file sharing site for free.

Thats why the deafening silence?

I've never downloaded anything from Rhapsody. I sit down and listen to stuff a few hours a week. If I can stream it, the only reason I'd need to own it is to make a copy for the car.

Pros:
There's a lot of stuff there. You won't get bored.
It supports Linux and isn't married to any particular browser or OS, though there are some Windows-only non-necessities.
The search seems to be thorough; there are a few things it's hard to hit (a garage band that exists only on anthologies from marginal labels), but it's a lot better than some other services I've spent time with.

Cons:
Some of the music, especially older stuff (it seems to me), is recorded at a much lower volume than others, so you might have to futz with the volume at unexpected times.
There are some damaged tracks that will cut out in the middle.
In general, it's not the most stable site I've ever been on, but it's not the worst, either. I'm not sure if the bloops are related to spikes in traffic.

These are relatively minor quibbles, and for $13 a month I'm quite happy with it.

I've never paid for Rhapsody, but have used the listen-to-a-few-free-function and enjoyed what I heard. I REALLY love www.pandora.com the music genome project as I can program my own "radio" stations and listen to all that I want..no ads, no popups, no anything but pure music.
