Can any-one give me any news of Jack and Margaret King? They ran what is in my opinion one of the greatest clubs of the 1960s: the Cellar Club at Cecil Sharp House. Jack was certainly the finest MC I ever knew: warm, welcoming, with a wonderful sense of humour and equally respectful of every-one who performed there, guests, residents and floor-singers alike. I have missed him over the years, as I have missed Margaret's gentle and kindly personality. The atmosphere they generated, and the quality of the music-making which resulted, was uniquely pleasurable, as witnessed by the capacity audience that filled it every Saturday when even the strangely-positioned fire-escape stairs had to serve as seating. The Cellar Club was and remains the yardstick I personally measure all other clubs against. So if any-one can tell me anything about Jack and Margaret, I'd be eternally grateful.

I too remember the Cellar Club and Jack and Margaret with affection. I booked them once in the late 60s when I ran a folk club in Kew. Jack did te gig on his own, as Margaret was unwell at the time, but have had no contact since.
All I have is the address they were at, at that time. I'd also like to know what has happened in the interim.

I have a tape recording (somewhere) of this couple at a Bath Folk Club run by Chas B Upton. They were entertaining! One song I remember had a bit about a Quaker getting his oats. This was back mid 60s!

The Tithe Barn was I think run by Jack & Kath King, who originated from Durham- they also ran the Cockermouth folk club & lived in the town - haven't seen them for 15 years

Jack and Margaret ran the Cellar Club at C# House back in the 60's, I believe they moved to Suffolk. Jack has posted on here as a guest but that was some years back,

I know Betty Carman who knew them well & booked them up here in Rotherham in the early 60's; she became great friends with them & was given permission to record the event on a reel to reel. I have cleaned up & transferred the recordings onto CDs for her. She then sent copies to Jack & Margaret; they were not doing recordings at Cecil Sharpe House at that time had never heard themselves before. They were delighted. I was told Jack and Margaret lived and worked at a bank in London for a number of years before moving to Hadleigh, Suffolk. Betty says she lost touch with Jack after Margaret died.    m
