Seriously, how much of a beginner and how near York? I'm always happy to show people the basics but I'm no professional teacher.

Oombanjo isn't far from York either, he's a truly excellent player, don't know if he teaches though?

I know a good teacher on Teesside, but that might be to far?

Nick - the question of 5-string or tenor banjo is pretty basic as the two are about as similar to play as guitar is to mandoline.
If it is 5-string, you then get onto the question of what sort of music your friend actually wants to be able to play. It has a big influence on what style of banjo he/she might need to learn.
Answers to these questions, plus how far your player is capable of travelling might produce very different answers on the forum.

The Gledhill Brothers at Pocklington Music teach Bluegrass Banjo amongst other instruments.

Geoff's correct about playing styles - I teach Old Time fiddle tunes on a 5-string banjo using clawhammer (frailing) technique.

Sorry not to respond before but work demands and gigs have kept me away from computer. Thanks for all the responses but I can only partially answer.

Geoff - it is Flaxton just off the A64 about 10m north of York. I know you are Selby side. The chap who asked me is not too sure what sort of music (but likes bluegrass I know). When his father died he was left a 4 and 5 string banjo so both! He says he is a complete beginner and would just like to learn to play 'something' on it. He seemed to like the jigs and reels we were playing but I'm not too sure - I have a phone number so could always put him in touch with someone if anyone is interested.

Pete - (long time no see/sing) - I did think of Frank if he does that sort of thing but don't have a contact for him. If you see him would you ask as it is reasonably local and in fact the ast time I saw him was in Flaxton in the summer at a friend's (since sadly died) party? You can always give him my number or email or anything

Paul - I did think of you as you gave me a very helpful basic first go/lesson when I last saw you at Joolz house. It was just the distance but let me know. I was playing a gig in Rainton last night and it's quite a trek from there to home and you are quite a bit north of there.

I know the Gledhills but that's a good idea too.

Leeds and Doncaster are probably a bit far but I'll come back with a bit more info once I speak to the chap. Does Tom Napper do lessons by the way - I enjoyed playing in a session a long time ago when he popped into York?

If you can't find anyone more local and the guy just wants someone to show him the basics of clawhammer and Bluegrass on the 5 string just let me know. I can also recommend some good books/ CD tutors if that helps.

Nick- Netflix has DVD's on banjo lessons. Don't know if you have that in the UK. You might try Folksongs of North America by Lomax. There is a great section in the back of the book on Banjo And Guitar playing. This might get you started. Dave

Being as my last post trying to redefine the word GUEST was deleted (what is wrong with the word "t(+3)anker" anyway?) let me just say that thanks to all for the help.

I have spoken to the chap who asked (it wasn't for me) and he has I think decided where he will try first. He was very appreciative and if it doesn't work I know I can return and follow up some of the other suggestions.

Nick, get your mate to drop into the tap on friday night, Frank has been there quite often recently, when he wasn't away with us! More news, I think the five of us will be going together as one band some of the time, did it in Cumbria last week and it was a real hoot! Anyway if Frank is a no show he will have a good night out!

I think that the Tap might be a bit mind boggling for a beginner and stranger who had not been before though I would guess he would have fun.

What are you going to call yourselves? 2 Black Sheep, A Stallion, A Pint of Lager and a Bag of Crisps? Getting a bit of a mouthful.
