Subject: RE: Woodie Guthrie on channel 4 news From: ced2 Date: 11 Oct 09 - 02:58 PM Sorry Dave I do not quite understand what you are saying. I only tuned into Channel 4 as the news that the archive of Woodies recordings had been unearthed. The question that I was not clear about was whether there was in that collection, a full 6 verse recording, by Woodie himself, of This Land is Your Land. The bit I heard seemed to suggest that there was, but as I say I tuned in part way through! Or are you saying that there exists another recording, bu Woodie of the full 6 verse version. Ced |
Subject: RE: Woodie Guthrie on channel 4 news From: NormanD Date: 11 Oct 09 - 04:12 PM The new suitcase set does contain the 'long' version of This Land. I read a recent newspaper review that confirms this. There is also an earlier-released 'long' version, on the Smithsonian-Folkways set. It's very low-fi and scratchy. It's great that the Private Property version is getting a wide release, in a good quality version. Didn't Pete Seeger and Springsteen sing this verse at Obama's Inauguration? The best modern version - with the Private Property verse sung early on - is by Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. It's old school soul, and gives the old song a new voice. |
