Sadly, Stephen Gately, actor, singer and member of Boyzone died on October 10th age 33. Ar Deis De Le na hAnam.

Glad you posted this Fiolar. I thought about it but wasn't sure I should because Boyzone wasn't folk, nor was Stephen Gately a music icon like, say, Chet Atkins or Peggy Lee. But I have appreciated the group's music and Gately's voice, and I was very sad to hear he had died.

I read that they said it was "natural causes" and "accidental," but no details.   Any further info on what killed him so suddenly.

This is so terribly sad; a sudden death at such a young age. Stephen Gately was a talented and interesting performer and will be missed. He was writing a book that was due to be released in December so hopefully that may still go ahead.

He suffered a pulmonary oedema, an accumulation of fluid on the lungs. He only 33 years of age. Condolences to his family and friends, may he rest in Peace.

This is a video of BoyZone's performance of "No Matter What" (from "Whistle Down The Wind") from a tribute to Andrew Lloyd-Webber.   I saw this on PBS a few years ago, and it was the first I had ever heard or seen of the group, but Stephen Gately (whose name I did not know at the time) was the one who stood out for me.    I still love this song and Stephen's voice on it.

Genie: It's possible. Pulmonary Oedema could be due to a heart problem and Pneumonia is usually caused by bacterial infection.

In case anyone needs a bit of context, one columnist in the Mail (small-minded right-wing British newspaper) used Gateley's death as a springboard for some confused & prejudiced ramblings about sexuality. It was too muddled an article to present a coherent argument, but the underlying inference was that Gateley being gay had something to do with his death.

I'm pleased to see that the other members of Boyzone have vowed to finish the book that Stephen Gately had been writing for the last three years. He was just putting the finishing touches to it.

He had a wonderful, genuine smile and by all accounts he was a wonderful, genuine person.

It's worth remembering that the Daily Mail publishes evil tripe every day. But generally people don't complain because they don't read it or hear about it or it is about some poor minority about which most people don't care.
