Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009 From: Genie Date: 14 Oct 09 - 12:56 AM Glad you posted this Fiolar. I thought about it but wasn't sure I should because Boyzone wasn't folk, nor was Stephen Gately a music icon like, say, Chet Atkins or Peggy Lee. But I have appreciated the group's music and Gately's voice, and I was very sad to hear he had died. I read that they said it was "natural causes" and "accidental," but no details. Any further info on what killed him so suddenly. Genie |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009) From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 14 Oct 09 - 09:53 AM This is so terribly sad; a sudden death at such a young age. Stephen Gately was a talented and interesting performer and will be missed. He was writing a book that was due to be released in December so hopefully that may still go ahead. |

Subject: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009 From: Genie Date: 14 Oct 09 - 01:15 PM This is a video of BoyZone's performance of "No Matter What" (from "Whistle Down The Wind") from a tribute to Andrew Lloyd-Webber. I saw this on PBS a few years ago, and it was the first I had ever heard or seen of the group, but Stephen Gately (whose name I did not know at the time) was the one who stood out for me. I still love this song and Stephen's voice on it. |

Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009) From: Fiolar Date: 15 Oct 09 - 08:00 AM Genie: Just to confirm, it was pulmonary oedema that was the cause of his death, probably better known as water on the lungs. |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009 From: Genie Date: 15 Oct 09 - 01:57 PM Is that different from pneumonia? |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009) From: Fiolar Date: 19 Oct 09 - 07:56 AM Genie: It's possible. Pulmonary Oedema could be due to a heart problem and Pneumonia is usually caused by bacterial infection. |

Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009) From: Smedley Date: 20 Oct 09 - 07:06 AM In case anyone needs a bit of context, one columnist in the Mail (small-minded right-wing British newspaper) used Gateley's death as a springboard for some confused & prejudiced ramblings about sexuality. It was too muddled an article to present a coherent argument, but the underlying inference was that Gateley being gay had something to do with his death. |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009) From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 20 Oct 09 - 07:31 AM I'm pleased to see that the other members of Boyzone have vowed to finish the book that Stephen Gately had been writing for the last three years. He was just putting the finishing touches to it. He had a wonderful, genuine smile and by all accounts he was a wonderful, genuine person. |

Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009) From: theleveller Date: 20 Oct 09 - 07:38 AM Th Daily Mail article was by the unspeakably awful Jan Moir. Here's the Guardian's reaction: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/oct/16/stephen-gately-jan-moir |
Subject: RE: Obit: actor/singer Stephen Gately (10 Oct 2009) From: Les in Chorlton Date: 20 Oct 09 - 08:20 AM From Stephen Fry: Fry wrote: "I gather a repulsive nobody writing in a paper no one of any decency would be seen dead with has written something loathsome and inhumane." It's worth remembering that the Daily Mail publishes evil tripe every day. But generally people don't complain because they don't read it or hear about it or it is about some poor minority about which most people don't care. L in C |

I think this video shows how likeable and funny he was: Boyzone's 1st TV appearance Genie |
