The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session will be held on Saturday 17 October from 3:30 to 7:30 PM at The Press Room, 77 Daniel Street, Portsmouth NH.

We are especially pleased to welcome our old friend Micca Patterson. If you haven't met and heard Micca yet, try to make the effort to join us this weekend - Tom

It was a good gathering at the Press Room yesterday, a combination of sadness in recognition of Barry Finn no longer walking this earth but also a happier realization that we carry him and his songs within us.

I was asked to lead "Yangtse River Shanty" and I choose to do it in a way that was closer to how I put the song together than the way Barry reworked it in the shape of a more traditional shanty. I'm not sure I could have done Barry's version yesterday, even though I know it well!

There were folks there that I hadn't seen in years, all singing songs in tribute to Barry. They all did a great job!

I had no intention of leading "Lee Fore Brace" but that's what came out when I tried to lead "The Outside Track." I guess "someone" just wanted to hear the lines again:

So I'll drink me drink and sing me song,
And none will know but me,
That a lump of me heart went down with Dan
That night in the Cape Horn sea.

Oh, Judy just handed me a list of what most folks sang yesterday which I'm posting in no particular order:

Linn: Shanty in Old Shanty Town, Keelman, Harbors of Home, Racing Clippers, Nine Times a Night

Rose: Bold Riley-O, Haul Awa', Life is Real, Here is My Home

Jeri: Fire Down Below

Bruce: Northwest Passage, On the Banks of the River So Wide, Roll Alabama Roll, One for the Morning Glory, The Fireship, Sailor's Hymm

Chris: Home Dearie Home, Fiddler's Green, Won't You Help Me to Raise 'Em, Farewell to Nova Scotia

Jackie: Fisherman's Wife,

Colin: Shanghied Dredger

Gina: Drinking that Wine, Whaling Song

Mica: Shantyman that Never Went to Sea, Lord Franklin Parody, Deep-Water Men

Mark: Clear Away the Morning, Maui, Jeannie C

Carol: Bring a Little Water Sylvie

Tim?: Bully in the Alley, Shanendoah, Maiden of Happy Australia, Price of Admiralty

Dave?: John Kanaka, I Wish that I was There,

Woman?: Ida Lewis

Judy: Roll the Old Chariot

Charley: Mobile Bay, Leave Her Johnnie, Tramps (Chantey for Steam)

There's about 10 songs missing but that should give the flavor of the evening.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

“Tim?â€쳌 is Marty. “Dave?â€쳌 is Jeff. I also did “’Way Stormalong, John,â€쳌 because the first verse got stuck in my head when I learned Barry was gone, and so I had to go and learn the rest.

Jeff-

Thanks for the clarifications.

I remember lyrics, mostly, but names are harder for me to pin down.

That wasn't Colin - it was Colin's "big" brother, Owen who sang the Oyster Dredgers.

We are leaving shortly for the wake.

"Owen"!

Well, we just thought Colin had just had a growth spurt while we were away for a couple of months.

I sang The Rose Of York, in Barry's memory, Cornish Lads, The Fisherman's Song and Beyond the Distant Hills, the last one for Micca.

"Shanty In Old Shanty Town" was Jerry Bryant's wry twist on the song. I also sang "Nine Times a Night" before Judy and Charlie arrived.

Kept expecting Barry to walk in...

Linn-

I certainly heard an "extra voice" in the chorus or refrain on many of the songs sung the other evening.

I know what you mean, Linn....

And while I don't exactly have proof that some part of Barry's spirit was there - we all know I can't sing loud enough to get on top of a chorus like we had on Roll the Old Chariot, but on that last chorus, I was up there - and it didn't even feel as if I was pushing.

Thank you, Barry - once again.
