I am in Coffeyville KS for the week - and have evenings free. There must be some music going on somehwere, nearby. Does anyone know of a jam, an open or a session in a 90 minute or so drive from Coffeyville?

I know, I know - I should have looked into this before I got here!!

Nice little town ... I have Mon - Thu nights open.

Thanks - Jed

Is the Doolin-Dalton gang still causing trouble?

You might find something in Tulsa OK, about 70 miles south. My impression is that it's a larger town, although I don't actually know anything of the "scene" there. My guess is that the closest(?) you'll come to "music" might be a karaoke bar - in either place.

There quite probably is some activity around, but in the smaller towns in the area it's more likely (small) bunches of friends at someone's home, meeting irregularly; and it can take months to "find a friend" for an invite.

There might be a bench at the town center park where you could sit down and start pluckin'. Odds are about even that someone will show up with an interest in joining in - or that you'll get arrested. Odds are best that you'll be largely ignored.

Having done the Coffeyville gig that Jed is now almost halfway through, I have to say that every evening I went back to my room in the boarding house (that was when you could GET a room in the boarding house; not so now) and watched DVDs of "Stargate SG1" on my laptop.

The days were exhausting and that is really all I had the energy to do. This was also four years ago and the situation might have changed.

I still maintain, tho, that if you are a musician and do fulfill the requirements, you should do this gig at least once. Joann Murdock, who books this residency says "Good things DO come from Coffeyville" and she is correct. I had some very nice moments.

Thanks folks for the attempt. I would consider going back to Tulsa and may do that on Thu - I know of a session of sorts there, and may look into that.

Deb - you're right on. I've been going back to the hotel, nuking a sweet potato, cutting up a red cabbage salad and munching on beef jerky - while spinning through the cable channels, watching Cold Cases, Discovery Health (I think I could actually remove a bullet from an abdomen and stop the bleeding), football, soccer - and then reading my "Johnny Reb/Billy Yank" for a second time.

It's been a nice town for walking - and the weather's been kind - so that helps. But I have to say I've enjoyed the gigs. The college kids sat there like lumps - but then came and spoke to me afterwards and had questions and comments (surprised the hell out of me). The sever Alzheimer's folks today nearly brought me to tears when they sang along, loud and clear, "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine ..." And the other homes have been enjoyable too. Short day tomorrow - then the high school day, which I enjoyed the last time.

Then I'm on to Lawrence KS for Saturday. This week and that Lawrence gig work well together for my travel plans.

Anyway - time to go nuke dinner!

You are correct about walking around the town, Jed. I enjoyed that very much when I was there.

BTW-Joann is looking for folks who can do the residency Jan - June 2010. If you are interested and have a week free, contact her: jmurdock@artistsofnote.com
