The Irish language channel TG4 is currently broadcasting a six-part series Ceol na nOileán (Music of the Islands) featuring music and song from the islands off the Irish mainland. Programmes already shown have featured the Aran Islands, Blasket, Tory Island, and Achill; the programme at 8pm this coming Friday 23 Oct 2009 looks at Inisbofin. The programmes are available in the TG4 Music Archives here TG4 Player by clicking on the Ceol - Cartlann link (there are some other treats in there too!) The programmes have on-screen subtitles in the English language for those like me whose Irish is poor to nonexistent! Some of the songs can only be heard in short clips before a talking head takes over, but even so the singing is still a marvel to hear. The comments are great too: "When I hear people singing my heart swells", "I'd dance on a halfpenny", and Lillis O Laoire talks with great insight and sensitivity about the singing tradition on Toraigh.
