Hello Mudcatters,

First off, i'll apologise if this isn't the right place to post this sort of request... I've just joined and i did have a quick search through the FAQs but couldn't find anything that prohibited it - anyway, if i missed something and this isn't appropriate please just say and i'll remove it immediately!

I'm a PhD student working on a project to do with the British folk scene and am looking for old copies of folk music magazines (any age, any regional specialism! Living Tradition, the EFDSS mag, FRoots, Irish Folk magazines...anything i haven't heard of too...) If anyone happens to have any hanging around at home that they want rid of - i realise that lots of people collect these (i've been looking for back issues on Ebay and so far haven't seen anything) - but just on the offchance that someone did have some they were just waiting to throw out with the recycling, i'd really appreciate it if they thought of me... i'm a student of modest means but i'd be willing to pay a little and at least cover the postage costs if anyone was able to help me out :-)

Or alternatively, if anyone knows where i might look for old (preferably cheap, not collectors) copies of folk mags please let me know!

Your request is certainly appropriate for posting here. I added the word "British" to your thread title because you said you wanted information on the British folk scene. If that's incorrect, please let me know.

The American Broadside Magazine is available online. Other U.S. folk magazines are/were Dirty Linen, Sing Out!, and Come for to Sing.

But you wanted UK Magazines, right?

Getting copies to own yourself will be difficult, though bundles of old fRoots/Southern Rag do get offered from time to time on the Readers Sales/ Wants board on the fRoots site and you could post a request there - people do seem to have regular loft clearouts.

You'll find that Cecil Sharp House hold quite a lot in their Library, and also of course it has been a legal requirement to deposit copies of everything printed with the British Library for many years.

For people doing serious research, I do have a huge archive at the fRoots premises. Not only have I been a magazine junkie all my life, but when the late Eric Winter retired he gave us all his archive going back to the mid 50s. So we have pretty much all the copies of Sing, Folk Scene, a lot of copies of Spin and many other small and regional UK folk mags (and a lot of memorabilia like club leaflets etc, not to mention 8 filing cab drawers stuffed with b&w photos!). The ones we seem to be short of are Karl Dallas' late 70s mag which I've temporarily forgotten the title of. On the US front I've got a pretty much complete set of Sing Outs from the late 50s, lots of Boston Broadsides, the US mag Folk Scene from the 70s/80s etc. They're not for letting out of here, but as I say, for people doing serious research they're welcome to use us as a reading room - the BBC did that for Folk Britannia, and Pete Frame and other authors for various projects.

Lucy, I've got a near complete set of the Scottish 'Broadside/Broadsheet' newsletter, but I'm in Germany. Where are you? If you're anywhere near Scotland you might contact Pete Heywood at The Living Tradition (after the next issue is out). He's got a few spares of every issue iirr.

Ian, I think you've just let yourself in for a prolonged visit from me in about five years' time (when my retirement starts) ...

I'm looking at the British folk scene now i suppose, but i'm interested in the history too and how folk music is and has been presented visually, artist/band photographs etc. I suppose also i'm interested in the differences between Irish / English and Scottish-identifying groups visual presentations...
I'm based in Manchester but always glad to travel - i had thought i should make another visit to the old Cecil Sharp house - i would quite like to scan some images and things (i'm guessing that's ok?) Ian - Maybe i could tie in a wee visit to FRoots (that's like a dream for me!) I'll email you...

I don't know how to access pms so please bear with me while i bash about on the keyboard again for a while!

anyway, I'm in Crewe and have a full set of fRoots (and earlier titles), English Dance & Song, Living Tradition, a lot of the 1960s national magazines, Folk News, Folk Review .... no wonder I can't move in my house! let me know if you'd like to come and consult.
I also have a lot of artist promo photos I inherited from Sidmouth.

Geoff, the request is more than five years old. Lucy has finished her PhD by now and is a research associate at the University of Sheffield. By the way, she is responsible for the Digital Folk survey that is being advertised at the top of of the Mudcat entry page. So if you want to help her, fill out the survey ;-)
