Any clues would be good.
The Ian Telfer song from Freedom and Rain perhaps?

From: Darowyn
Date: 21 Oct 09 - 12:15 PM

Finisterre, credited to Ian Telfer of The Oyster Band on the record.

Farewell, Finisterre,
Sleep away the afternoon
Rocking with the tide,
Drinking with the moon
I found a ticket in my pocket
All the way from Port-of-Spain
And the warm wind from the Indies covered me again.

Santander, the sky is falling
The tale we told each other has an end
Santander, you hear me calling
You, that never lost a friend...

We'd often look for gold,
Treasure buried in the sand
We hid it long ago,
Before our wars began
When the world was green and early
And time was on our side
Before the storm got up to blow us far and wide.

Santander, the sky is falling
The tale we told each other has an end
Santander, you hear me calling
You, that never lost a friend...

Farewell, Finisterre,
Sleep away the afternoon
Just rocking with the tide,
Drinking with the moon
Last night I turned the glasses over
And I drank the bottle dry
The moon stared out to sea all night and so did I.

Santander, the sky is falling
The tale we told each other has an end
Santander, you hear me calling
You, that never lost a friend,
Never lost a friend...

It's a very evocative tune, but since I've never played it, I'm not sure of the chords.
Cheers
Dave

The only people that still sing this and have recorded it that I know are Marula, (Tim & Sue Bryne) from Bristol area and always at Priddy.

I play this with just three simple chords and a capo on the 3rd fret. You can play around with the capo or transpose the chords up or down to find your own key.

Farewell, Finisterre, ( C, G, C )
Sleep away the afternoon ( D, G )
Rocking with the tide, ( C, G )
Drinking with the moon ( C, D )
I found a ticket in my pocket ( C, G )
All the way from Port-of-Spain ( C, D )
And the warm wind from the Indies covered me again. ( C, G, D )

Santander, the sky is falling ( C, G, C )
The tale we told each other has an end ( G, D )
Santander, you hear me calling ( C, G, C )
You, that never lost a friend... ( G, D )

You can check out my "myspace" page to hear it.

( I can't seem to get the "blue clicky" thing to work.)

Just heard June Tabor's new recording of this on her recent CD "Ashore" Very dirge-like rendition. I much prefer the flawless original version with the Oyster Band on "Freedom & Rain"

yes, i agree the original version is definitive, but maybe the newer version, like the new cd, will grow on me in time - her recordings often take time to sink in to be fully savored. ps, i also liked wanderer's version..thanks for the link

This has been bugging me from ages, so I sat down and took the tune out from the Oysterband record. I believe it is the following:

Intro:
D G C G D

(C)Farewell, (D)Finis(G)terre,
(C)Sleep away the (D)afternoon
(C)Rocking (D)with the (G)tide,
(C)Drinking with the (Em)moon
I found a (C)ticket (D)in my (G)pocket
All the way from Port-of-(C)Spain
And the warm wind (D)from the (Em)Indies covered (D)me again.

Santan(G)der, the sky is (C)falling
The tale we told (G)each other has an (D)end
Santan(G)der, you hear (Em)me calling
(C)You, that (G)never lost a (D)friend...

(at the end)
Never Lost a (C)Friend.... (C) (D) (G)...

This is pretty much what I got. I do a walkup on "Santander", C, D/F#, G, one chord per syllable.

So, I agree pretty much the above chords and:

The key is G
The song is I, IV, V, mVI

I will try to transcribe, something that I never been successful at, but at least I have a starting point with (C)San(D)tan(G)der.

This will get you started.

"Cape Finisterre is a rock-bound peninsula on the west coast of Spain. In Roman times it was believed to be the end of the known world. The name Finisterre, like that of Finistère in France, derives from the Latin finis terrae, meaning "end of the earth".

Santander is a male personal name. I once met a Santander from Myanmar.

Apparently the singer and Santander spent time together in childhood, looking for buried treasure in the sand. Then they fought and parted. The singer has wandered to the end of the world in either France or Spain, but an eastern breeze reminds him of the past. Now he drinks and he wanders and he remembers Santander.

"Santander, the sky is falling..."

Always thought it about the lifelong, often long distance, friendship between Alejandro Finisterre (1919-2007) and Leon Felipe (1884-1968) before, during and after the Spanish Civil War. The Battle of Santander was all she wrote for the Republicans.

fyi: Felipe's publisher in exile was Finisterre, Mexico, D.F..

Santander is the capital city of the Cantabria region on Spain’s north coast. It is nowhere near Fisterra (Finisterre).

I like Phil's interpretation... who knows what Ian Telfer was thinking about.

I wonder is Santander is a variant of Alexander.

Also a long way from Port of Spain (both Finisterre and Santander)I have wondered about this for years since the Oyster Band and June Taber played in Vancouver in the early ninties.I wish I had known that Ian Telfer wrote the song, I could have asked him to explain.

Ya know how we speak of a "guitar-shaped object", a thing which looks like a guitar but fulfills none of a guitar's functions? Well, there are a lot of "song-shaped word collections" around today. This song sounds like it's about something, but it's not, really.
==========
I still think Santander is a person. For example,

Santan(G)der, you hear (Em)me calling
(C)You, that (G)never lost a (D)friend...

How can a city hear someone? How can a city lose a friend?

If you can sing farewell to tarwathie and mean a place, you can sing farewell to Finnisterre too! There are lots of folksongs that address a place as though it was a person (a whole lot better than our laws when they address corporations as though are people imho). Anyway, one of the beauties of traditional song is that there's lots of room for interpretation. If you want Satander to be a person or a place or a sausage dog, it's okay. When you sing it it's yours!
