Subject: Worlds of Trad October 2009 Upload From: Fred McCormick Date: 21 Oct 09 - 08:56 AM Just to let everybody know, the latest edition of Worlds of Trad Internet radio is now uploaded and making magnanimously mellifluous melodious music even as you read this. You can pick the programme up by going straight to the station player at http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/mini.cgi?station_name=oneworldmusic&tm=7011 . Alternatively, you can bring up the station page first. Click on http://www.live365.com/stations/oneworldmusic . Then click the yellow PLAY button. Then, if you press the green button to the right, you can save Worlds of Trad as a preset. That will save you having to search the next time you listen in. This month we don't have too many obituaries to commemorate, thankfully. But we do clock up quite a few anniversaries. They include the 20 years which have elapsed since Ewan MacColl's death; the 50th anniversary of those legendary Alan Lomax-Shirley Collins Southern Folk Heritage field recordings; Topic Records' 70th; and the 80th anniversary of the Wall Street crash. Helping us cut the cake for that lot include MacColl himself, Paddy Tunney, Joe Heaney, Sheila Stewart, The Elliotts of Birtley, E.C. Ball, Fred McDowell, Charlie Monroe, Jeannie Robertson, Hedy West, Norman Kennedy and a whole lot more. In between times, Sarah Spencer tells us what drove Hannah Johnson to auction her big jackass; Tampa Red and the Mississippi Sheiks rewrite a couple of Hoagy Carmichael songs; I dig an old Isla Cameron record from the archives; we hear from some square dancing Norwegians, some percussive Peruvians, some interesting Italians – including one very drunken Italian; there are instrumentals galore from the Cottars, JP Fraley, Joe Hutton, The Blue Ridge Ramblers and Wallace "Cheese" Read; there's a couple of brother duets from the Louvins and the Armstrong Twins; and Leroy Carr tells us how he got in the circus for nowt. All that and much, much more. The only time anyone let me in the circus for nothing, the ringmaster pointed at one of the cages and told me to go sit in it. Happy Listenings, Fred McCormick.
