Lyr Req: East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam by Tom Russell. Just heard on BBC Radio 2 Tom Harding show. Not found anywhere on Google. I'd like to figure out all the literary references. Holden Caulfield, JD Salinger, Raise High the Roofbeams Carpenter, etc.

Do yourself a favour and buy the CD. It comes with a lyric booklet. The album title is 'Blood and Candle Smoke'

If you are UK based, it will be on Listen Again via internet for a couple more days. The song plus interview will be there until Wednesday.
If you are not UK, please disregard this message...
Quack!

There are several dozen film clips of the song (Letterman for example)and multiple full sound files. (Entertainment Weekly and of course bit-torrent) Use the Yahoo engine. The guy must be exhausted - he flubs up in most of the live clips - grueling circus of interviews to promote the albumn

Here you go...along the lines of:

I slept through the 1960's
I heard gory friends say
Put me on to catch a great white bird to the shores of Afri-Kay
Where I lost my blessed heart to the sound of a talking drum
Yeah, East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam

Yeah and on the roads outside of Sho-Bo
Lord I fell down on my knees
Female spirits in old mud huts
Iron bells ringing up in the trees
And an 80 years old white priestess
She made Ju-Ju all night long
Yeah, East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam

Raise high the roof beams carpenter boy
They'll be coming through the rye
In the I sin of my soul the Man-On-the-Moon
I laughed so hard that I cried
It was somewhere in those rainy seasons
That I learned to call my song
Yeah, East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam

Oh, Africa - mother Africa
You lay heavy on my brain
You cradle of civilization
Heart of Darkness - Flood of Death
We had to flee and run scared
When the crocadile ate the son
Yeah, East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam

Think its going to rain tonight
I can smell it coming off the sage
As I sit hear reading ol' gran Grimm
I taste Africa on every page
Then I close my eyes and see those old clay roads
At sundown boys I'm gone
Yeah, East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam

Raise high the roof beams carpenter boy
They be coming through the rye
It was a movable feast
A foreign memory
A dark old lullaby
He was the smoke of a thousand coke fires
He was the wrong end of a gully
Yeah, East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam
Yeah, East of Woodstock, West of Vietnam

Are YOU sure it was this you heard?

The BBC transcript indicates the song played was "Criminology" which has much catchier phrases , for example from E.E.Cummings poem "Buffalo Bill's Defunct" comes the (How do like your blue-eyed boy, Mr. Death?) and double meanings on Prince Rupert the son of Friedrich and also the Island in British Columbia Canada...also double on "Apache Pass.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Since Garg has done all the hard typing work, here is what Russell actually wrote:

EAST OF WOODSTOCK, WEST OF VIET NAM
(Tom Russell)

I slept through the 1960s
I heard Dory Previn say
Me I caught the great white bird
To the shores of Africay
Where I lost my adolescent heart
To the sound of a talking drum
East of Woodstock, West of Viet Nam

On the roads outside Oshogbo
I fell down on my knees
There were female spirits in old mud huts
Iron bells ringing up in the trees
And an 80-year-old white priestess
She made juju all night long
East of Woodstock, West of Viet Nam

Raise high the roof beams, carpenter boy
We're comin' through the rye
In the cinema I watched the man walk the moon
And I laughed so hard I cried
And it was somewhere in those rainy seasons
That I learned to carve my song
East of Woodstock, West of Viet Nam

Africa, Mother Africa
You lay heavy on my breath
You old cradle of civilisation
Heart of Darkness, blood and death
But we had to flee you runnin' scared
When the crocodile ate the sun
East of Woodstock, West of Viet Nam

I think it's gonna rain tonight
I can smell it comin' off the sage
As I sit hear reading old Graham Greene
I taste Africa on every page
And then I close my eyes
And see those red clay roads
At sundown, and boys I'm gone
East of Woodstock, West of Viet Nam

Raise high the roof beams, carpenter boy
Yeah, we're comin' through the rye
It was a moveable feast of war and memory
A dark old lullaby
It was the smoke of a thousand cook fires
It was the wrong end of a gun
East of Woodstock, West of Viet Nam

--Stewie.

Hilarious!

It's bad enough that Graham Green morphs into "Gran Grimm"!

Dory Previn from now on will always be "Gory Friends" to me!

I think you need to clear the wax out of your ears and invest in a copy of the album, Gargoyle

:-)
