Subject: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 27 Oct 09 - 03:51 PM WARNING..... If you cannot handle gross, please leave the thread now. OK.. maybe this is a hypochondria raving or maybe it is because I have not had pepperoni in about 6 or 7 years. I treated myself to a fresh Sainsbury's pepperoni pizza this evening for dinner. The pepperoni was extremely spicy and salty. Before I finished, noticed distinct soapy taste in my mouth. I have to keep spitting out the saliva (eewww gross) because my mouth tastes like washing up (dish) liquid. No it was nothing on the plate. The grape juice had after also tastes of soap. I have brushed my teeth, used listerine mouth wash to no avail. I tried to .... well ... purge the meal, but I can't do enforced vomitting. My stomach doesn't exactly hurt, but there is discomfort in upper chest, like reflux with, of course, more nasty soapy taste. Has anyone ever experienced this sort of thing. I tried to google it, but didn't get much joy. Any ideas how to get rid of the taste? |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Oct 09 - 04:10 PM Do you have any of that pepperoni left? Can you persuade anyone else to taste it for you? If you had several slices, I'd recommend you swish them around in some warm water to see what happens. Did the pizza have any cilantro in it? I've never heard of putting cilantro in a pizza, but I suppose they might have confused it with oregano or some other herb. I've always thought cilantro tasted a bit like soap. It's an acquired taste. |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: SINSULL Date: 27 Oct 09 - 04:20 PM Actually, when vegetable fats go bad they start to taste soapy. Maybe it was the fat used in the bread or sauce? I guess it could be in the pepperoni as well but it is so salty I can't imagine it going bad. Don't eat the stuff myself. How do you feel? Any sign of food poisoning I would get thee to a physician. |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 27 Oct 09 - 04:21 PM TheSilentOne has been vegetarian for 27 years, so no I don't think he's game for that experiment. He did say that there was nothing wrong with the grape juice. He tasted hat from my glass. Icky taste still in my mouth. Do they put cilantro in pepperoni? I've never been able to find cilantro in the UK. Didn't think it was used much here. |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnomad Date: 27 Oct 09 - 04:43 PM Cilantro is widely available in the UK, but we call it Coriander. The botanical name is Coriandrum Sativum, and it is also known as Chinese parsley. Asian food shops are likely to have it, but so do many 'ordinary' grocers, supermarkets, and even veg markets. I could imagine ground coriander seed going into pepperoni, but not the herby tops, which are the bit which (imo) taste soapy. I have no idea what has caused your problem (unless the Coriander guess is right) but it sounds unpleasant. Hope you get no lasting effects. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 27 Oct 09 - 04:46 PM ok... that's weird.. sides of tongue, roof of mouth and inside lips getting a bit sore now. like I've been burned. but I haven't been. pizza was cooled a bit before I ate it. I think it is sensitivity to spice. or maybe nitrates. have had before. longtime ago, which is probably why I stopped eating pepperoni. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnomad Date: 27 Oct 09 - 04:53 PM Oh, yes, meant to say: write and tell Sainsburys, you might get a refund. More to the point if enough folks tell them they dislike the flavour they might just stop making them that way. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 27 Oct 09 - 05:03 PM Taste is weakening a bit now after lots of water. What a weird thing. Thanks for the info re coriander and cilantro. I didn't know they were the same thing. ThesilentOne had a 2 day lasting metallic taste a few weeks ago. Turned out that pine nuts can cause this and we had penne pesto with pine nuts. Weird ain't it? |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnu Date: 27 Oct 09 - 05:06 PM Yes. Because it's not healthy for you and anything that keeps you from eating it is a good thing. On the other hand, if the fat has turned "lye", no wonder you feel as if you have been burned. As for the CRAP that is in it, that can burn ya too... all the way from asshole to appetite. Drink some wine... wait 30 minutes and drink some milk... wait 30 minutes and drink as much water as you can. |

Of course, if you REALLY wanna "make sure", the quantity proportions are... drink a shitload of wine.. before which, call the boss and say you won't be in tomorrow. |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 27 Oct 09 - 06:13 PM i detest wine really can't stand any spirits the taste is going away but I do have a bit of acid, so maybe a little milk and even more ice water. chewing on ice always makes me feel better. No more pepperoni pizza. In fact I rarely eat pizza (even margerita) cause the combo of bread, tomato sauce and cheese is just too much for my delicate tummy. I just over did it with the deadly pepperoni. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 27 Oct 09 - 06:21 PM I have nothing to suggest about the taste, Virginia. If you ate a pizza, there could have been something wrong with the crust, the cheese, the sauce or the pepperoni. Maybe somebody washed the baking pan with soap and forgot to rinse it. It's hard know what to think. I do have a comment about cilantro. I've been mystified as to why my husband (mixed Czech and Irish) objects so much to cilantro, which to me has a pleasant, cool taste, something like a mint. Then I read in a book that to certain people of European descent, cilantro has a very nasty taste. There's even a site about it: Ihatecilantro.com It's a hereditary thing. As a result of learning this, I no longer cook with cilantro. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Oct 09 - 06:35 PM Seems to me that pepperoni has sometimes tasted soapy to me, too. Come to think of it, cilantro sometimes tastes soapy to me, too. I thought it was just me being weird. Maybe Virginia Tam and I are BOTH weird... but I still like pepperoni and cilantro. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: Jeri Date: 27 Oct 09 - 07:02 PM Pepperoni contains a lot of fat. Fat oxidizes, and that may make it taste soapy. The fennel may make it taste soapy, I don't know. Oxidation shouldn't cause illness, but if you hate the taste that much, it's enough. I don't mind cilantro in small amounts, camouflaged by other ingredients, but on its own, I dislike the taste strongly. I can't describe the taste as 'soapy'. It's more of a 'DAMN!-how'd-my-lawn-mower-clippings-get-in-my-mouth!?' sort of thing. Makes me want to chew my toenails or lick a cat's ass to get the taste out of my mouth. (I've never actually done either of these, but I think toenails and cat ass probably taste better than cilantro.) Pepperoni, I LOVE. (And fennel) |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnu Date: 27 Oct 09 - 07:57 PM You lye. Fat and salt make soap. Wiki it. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: maeve Date: 27 Oct 09 - 08:22 PM I hope you're feeling much better, VT. gnu- I would make a basic soap using: (water + wood ashes)= lye plus rendered fats + heat = soap (soft or poured into molds) Other ingredients for comfort, cleansing, scent, and color are optional. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnu Date: 27 Oct 09 - 08:44 PM I prefer lavender, as I am rather delicate. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: maeve Date: 27 Oct 09 - 08:50 PM Right then, one order of lavender soft soap... with pepperoni, or without? |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnu Date: 27 Oct 09 - 08:52 PM I don't like the salt... without, please... |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: maeve Date: 27 Oct 09 - 08:59 PM Certainly, gnu. I prefer to avoid salt in my soap. VT I really do hope the nasty soapy taste has left you. You know, the taste and the irritation in your mouth may have been triggered by two different ingredients. Fresh pineapple and medicinal cinnamon bark will both raise blisters in my mouth. And about cilantro- 'orrible stuff. m |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 27 Oct 09 - 09:32 PM This may come under the category of "more than I want to know about pepperoni". Traditionally, breed hogs, mainly because of high levels of testosterone, make poor quality pork because of a distinctive taste. On the other hand, breed hogs are often huge, and yield a lot of meat. So what do they do with breed hog meat when the hogs are getting to old for breeding? Pepperoni. I'm not kidding about this. It takes a lot of spice to disguise the distinctive flavor, and pepperoni is the spiciest pork you'll find. And that's why I don't eat it. Sorry |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: SINSULL Date: 28 Oct 09 - 11:20 AM I detest cilantro. Now I know why. I also detest pepperoni but I think that is a personal thing since I prefer my pizza plain, my coffee black and grilled cheese without tomato or bacon. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnu Date: 28 Oct 09 - 01:42 PM Grilled cheese AND tomatoe... people actually DO that? |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: gnu Date: 28 Oct 09 - 01:58 PM I LOVE toasted mater sandwiches. I use Miracle Whip for that tangy taste, and pepper. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 28 Oct 09 - 02:33 PM I am here. Still have mild soap taste. Not eating much because the taste just ruins everything. TheSilentOne got my bagel with cream cheese and pineapple this morning. He said lovely, I said vile. Only thing that tasted normal today was apple eaten about 3pm. Think I will have another now for dinner. I just don't want anything but ice water. Tum hurts some, but I think because I am not eating. If this doesn't go away by tomorrow PM, will see doc. Thank you for all your concern. Wish I could get Miracle Whip in the UK. Tomato and cuke sandwhiches are brill with the Whip. |

Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: Bat Goddess Date: 28 Oct 09 - 07:30 PM Grilled cheese (sharp cheddar) with tomato and a dash of oregano -- on pumpernickel bread. Miracle Whip is vile and disgusting -- I grew up thinking I didn't like mayonnaise (and I'm a mayonnaise abuser) because my parents told me that shh-tuff was mayonnaise. I'm sensitive to cinna-mint flavoring. The cinna-mint flavoring in Tom's of Maine (all natural) toothpaste and mouthwash made my gums peel. (Yes, that is truly as disgusting as it sounds.) Not to mention irritate the corners of my mouth, etc. until I figured out what the problem was. Too much cinnamon will irritate my mouth, too. Sounds as if there was something wrong with that pepperoni. Hope you feel better and get rid of rogue flavors soon! Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: GUEST,Helen, cookieless Date: 29 Oct 09 - 02:26 AM Hi Virginia, Over the past few weeks I have been suffering from a persistent soapy taste, a tingly tongue, and associated queasiness. I cannot pin it down to any particular food, or anything specific that I have done. Yesterday my hubby told me he had the soapy taste too. I did a bit of Googling and came up with no hard and fast answers, except that excess fluoride can have a soapy taste as a symptom. What I did figure out, though, from my "research" is that as soap is an alkali, and alkali is counterbalanced by acid, if I drink water with a bit of lemon juice or vinegar in it, or even if I take a couple of Vitamin C tablets it seems to make the soapy taste go away. I'm suspecting the cause may be some vaguely undefined tummy bug or something. But at least I have found a way to relieve the problem. Maybe that's why wine might help. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 29 Oct 09 - 04:12 AM Hi Helen That explains why the orange I ate last night seemed to was the taste away. Woke with no soap taste but I still don't want to eat anything but fruit, raw veg and ice. Breakers a handful of dry muesli and sliced tomato. Brushed my teeth and the soap taste came back. Hmmm! Me thinks I have a bad batch of Colgate. It is a new tube, just started the other day. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: GUEST,Helen, Cookieless Date: 29 Oct 09 - 05:37 AM Hi again, I tried using alternatives to toothpaste, but I decided it probably wasn't the toothpaste. When I first had the problem I had a few glasses of water throughout the day with a couple of teaspoons of lemon juice and that really seemed to do the trick. Every week or so the problem seems to come back, and now I just take a couple of Vitamin C tablets. After that it seems to get back to normal, and I can eat whatever I want. My hubby is starting to think it might be the water in this house. We moved here a few months ago, and I have never had the soapy tasted before, so he might be right. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: Mrrzy Date: 29 Oct 09 - 08:56 AM Pepperoni is yummy, to me. Cilantro doesn't taste like soap, or like cat pee as a friend of mine claims, it just closes my throat and I can't breathe in. Papaya, on the other hand, *does* taste like soap. |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: GUEST,Helen, Cookieless Date: 29 Oct 09 - 03:37 PM Hi again, My problem did start when I opened the last new tube of toothpaste (Colgate). I've had the soapy taste & tingly tongue again in the last few days, but I use the toothpaste every day and I don't get the symptoms every day, so that's why I decided it probably didn't relate to the toothpaste. I use a pencil at work, with some of the paint has peeled off the end, and I often put the end in my mouth. I have noticed that the soapy taste seems to happen after I do that. If the pencil was made where safety standards are not followed, maybe there is something in the wood, or the paint. I have put the cap of a ballpoint pen over the end of the pencil to stop me from chewing it. I'll see if that makes a difference. About a year ago I was getting a tingly tongue for a week or so, and it seemed to be worse if I drank coffee (real, not instant). That problem developed into a dose of the 'flu, but there was no soapy taste. By the way, was there a reason why you thought the pepperoni was the cause? It could have been something else in the meal, even something you drank, like coke or coffee, etc. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: should pepperoni taste like soap? From: VirginiaTam Date: 29 Oct 09 - 05:01 PM It may have been the spices in the pepperoni. Coriander. I know I did not like cilantro when i was in the US. I did not know that coriander and cilantro are the same. But my soapy problem seems to have gone away again. Will see if it comes back when i brush my teeth before bed. Don't put pencils or pens in your mouth. Never know who has been handling them. |
