I found the news of Brian's death by complete accident, surfing the internet. Terrible, terrible news.

He was 'Mr Krengel' to me - I was taught by him in an Essex Comprehensive in the 70's. He was my housemaster, English teacher and directed me in plays.

I always found him good fun, interesting to be with and challenging. I missed him a lot hen whe left the area.

All the very best to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Dennis

We have enough recordings of Brian over the years at Whittlebury Song & Ale to make a full CD - we would be happy to send one to anyone who wants one, for say £2 each to cover costs and p&p, and we'll donate any surplus to the RNLI or any other cause that Cathy considers appropriate.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words and memories of my granddad.

I was lucky enough to spend Christmas with Brian a few years back and like Kate we spent some time in the Dolphin. It was a privilege to get an insight into the joy of folk music that was so important to him and that now is to me.

I can remember him singing coal and cotton that night as clear as if it was yesterday and I think it is a testament to him that he was so easily able to convert an inner London kid with his voice and with his passion.

I am very proud to have been be your grandson Brian.

Sad news.

Brian was a great help in the early days of the "revolution" that turned Whitby Folk Festival into Whitby Folk Week.

He remained always positive and was always easy company whenever we met.

What them suvverners call a Diamond Geezer.

Another good man sadly gone. I first met Brian at the Bay's Folk Weekends many years ago and perhaps even at Richmond Festival before that but sadly haven't seen him recently. Yes, he was a lovely gentleman and sang some great songs over the years. Please pass on my condolences to his family.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and memories.

Brian was a wonderfully cultured, intelligent man with wide-ranging interests and knowledge.

As well as folk music, he was a passionate lover of all forms of classical music, with a huge music collection - we were brought up with Beethoven, among many other composers, resounding through the house when he was marking his school books in the evening.

Before coming to Boggle Hole Brian was an English teacher and literature and theatre (especially Shakespeare) were other great loves he and our mother Cathy had; we lived in a house of books (our parents' house still heaves with them) so we were brought up to be avid readers - no telly! Their three children - Dorothy, Peter, and I - are so grateful to them for sharing these cultural interests with us.

Brian also loved nature, walking, and cricket, as well as sloe gin and fine whiskeys! In recent years we went walking together along the cliffs near their house - thank you Bian for teaching a city girl the names of hedgerow flowers and plants.

In 2002 Brian featured in Radio 4's Open Country about Robin Hoods Bay - in this he sings local songs and talks about being an "offcomer" to Bay; I have the recording which I can't upload here but could e-mail to anyone who's interested.

Thank you Brian for everything you gave us and everything you did for us.
Janet

though I didnt know Brian that well,he always made me feel welcome when I played the club, and I know that whenever I am back at Robin Hoods Bay,I will be thinking of him.
I consider myself honoured to have known him.Dick Miles

To echo my sisters words, thank you everyone who's kindly remembered Brian and offered a few more memories about him, his singing and his favourite tipple.
I remember him always being really interested in my running cross country for the county when I was younger since he had studied sport at university. He also had passion for our heritage, our jewish anscestry and would often get sepia pictures out to show us, alongside talking about how old the apple tree in his garden was and asking who we were 'courting' at the time.
Sadly he is going to miss meeting his first great grandson who is due in march. I'm a great believer in guardian angels and am sure my grandad will be around sometimes.

Goodbye for now Grandad Krengel Xx

Just wanted to thank everyone for there kinds words about my Granddad. I remember him taking me to the Dolphin, I think, to listen to him sing with the Bay Folk club.

I know my mum, aunt; uncle and grandma will take some comfort in your messages, especially the fond memories of his sloe gin. I recipe which he thankfully passed on to my mother!

As previously stated the funeral is to be held on 16/11/09 at 14:00pm and it would be lovely to see you all there, to hear some more stories of Brian and also hopefully have a song or two.

Kate

Have just learned that Brian's funeral is due to take place on Monday 16th of November at Scarborough Crematorium at 2pm (time subject to final confirmation). Also this piece by Jim Foster which will tell a little more of poor Brian's death.

Doc

People throughout the world of folk music have been saddened to hear about the tragic death of Brian Krengel, of Robin Hood's Bay. Brian, a proud son of Burnley, was well known and respected for both his singing (he had an incredible repertoire of songs) and his songwriting. A founder member of Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club in the 1970's, Brian, who had twice beaten off cancer, was a regular attender up to early autumn this year, when the Alzheimers that he had been suffering from for several years seemed to worsen.
A major search and rescue operation involving police, dogs, Coastguards and an RAF Sea King helicopter was carried out in Robin Hood's Bay on Wednesday 28th October after Brian was reported missing. After an extensive search a body was found at the base of the cliff. It was winched up by the helicopter and later identified as being that of Brian. He was 79.
Brian will be remembered with affection by all the Bay Folk Club regulars and many of the visitors. At one of his last appearances at the Club he arrived sporting a Burnley Football strip – he was proud they had made it to the Premier League – and had just enjoyed a memorable victory over Man U.
We will be thinking of him when the Christmas Season comes around, and we "sip a little nectar from the black thorn tree."

Seems like five but probably twentyfive years since we sang carols around those tiny streets of Bay our whistles whetted by that wonderful home mead Sloe Gin of Brian's indeed as famed in his own song. A really canny guy who I'll certainly miss.

Our sympathy to Cathy.

Sad to hear this - Brian was a good friend for many years, although we'd lost touch recently. A fine singer with a wealth of songs, including some of his own, and he and his wife Cathy were always most hospitable when we were in North Yorkshire. Is Cathy still around, does anyone know?

Yes, sad news indeed. I knew Brian for many years and he was always friendly and helpful. I recorded several singers in Bay area thanks to his help, and it was Brian who first brought to light the Moorsom Manuscript of ballads from Bay. Like his son-in-law Mike Soar he will be sadly missed.
